PM, CM Omar, AICC Prez mourn demise
New Delhi: Former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, an eminent economist and a towering figure in Indian politics, passed away on Thursday at the age of 92.
He was admitted to Delhi’s All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) after his health deteriorated.
Dr. Singh was brought to the hospital’s emergency department around 8 p.m., where medical teams worked tirelessly. However, despite their efforts, the nation lost one of its most respected leaders.
Known as the architect of India’s economic liberalization, Dr Singh rose to prominence as Finance Minister in the government of PV Narasimha Rao (1991-1996). His visionary reforms opened the Indian economy to global markets, transforming it into one of the fastest-growing economies in the world.
As Prime Minister from 2004 to 2014, he led India through significant milestones, including the Indo-US nuclear deal and unprecedented economic growth. His calm demeanour, integrity, and intellectual acumen earned him widespread respect across political lines.
Dr. Singh is survived by his wife, Gursharan Kaur, and three daughters. Details of the funeral arrangements are awaited.

Prime Minister, Narendra Modi in a post on X, said as a Prime Minister, he made extensive efforts to improve people’s lives.
“India mourns the loss of one of its most distinguished leaders, Dr. Manmohan Singh Ji. Rising from humble origins, he rose to become a respected economist. He served in various government positions as well, including as Finance Minister, leaving a strong imprint on our economic policy over the years. His interventions in Parliament were also insightful. As our Prime Minister, he made extensive efforts to improve people’s lives,” Modi wrote on X.
Meanwhile, the All India Congress Committee (AICC) President, Mallikarjun Kharge, said that “Undoubtedly, history shall judge you kindly, Dr. Manmohan Singh ji,”
“With the passing of the Former Prime Minister, India has lost a visionary statesman, a leader of unimpeachable integrity, and an economist of unparalleled stature. His policy of Economic Liberalisation and Rights-based welfare paradigm profoundly transformed the lives of crores of Indians, virtually creating a Middle Class in India and lifting crores out of poverty.”
“I mourn the loss of a lifelong senior colleague, a gentle intellectual and a humble soul who embodied the aspirations of India, having risen through the ranks with unwavering dedication. I am proud to have been a part of his Cabinet as Labour Minister, Railway Minister and Social Welfare Minister. A man of action rather than words, his immense contribution to nation-building will forever be etched in the annals of Indian history. In this moment of sorrow, I extend my deepest and heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and countless admirers. May they get the strength to overcome this huge loss. Chief Minister Omar Abdullah today expressed profound sorrow and grief over the demise of former Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh, who passed away on Thursday at the age of 92.
In his condolence message, the Chief Minister described Dr Singh as a towering statesman and the architect of India’s economic reforms in the early 1990s, which transformed the nation’s economy.
“Dr Singh’s visionary leadership and pathbreaking reforms laid the foundation for India’s economic boom, liberalizing markets and elevating the country to new heights of growth and development,” Omar Abdullah said.
Recalling Dr Singh’s tenure as Prime Minister, the Chief Minister highlighted his relentless efforts to uplift millions of Indians out of poverty through inclusive policies.
He also expressed gratitude for Dr Singh’s significant contributions to Jammu and Kashmir. “Dr Manmohan Singh’s deep concern for the development of Jammu and Kashmir was evident throughout his tenure. His initiatives, including the extension of rail connectivity to the Kashmir Valley, brought new opportunities for the region and its people,” he said.
The Chief Minister also remembered Dr Singh’s keen interest in fostering peace and development in the state.
“His efforts to engage with the people of Jammu and Kashmir, along with his unwavering support for dialogue and reconciliation, reflected his deep commitment to the welfare of the region,” Omar Abdullah added.
“Dr Manmohan Singh’s humility, intellect and dedication to the nation will always be remembered. His loss is an irreparable one for the country,” the Chief Minister said, offering his heartfelt condolences to Dr Singh’s family, friends, and admirers during this difficult time.
The Chief Minister prayed for eternal peace to the departed soul and strength to the bereaved family to bear this loss.
