Srinagar: The Travel Agents Society of Kashmir (TASK) and IATO – J&K Chapter are delighted to announce that the IATO Hall of Fame Award has been conferred posthumously to Late M.L. Razdan, a founding member of TASK since 1967.
This recognition is a significant moment for both TASK and IATO, said Ibrahim Siah, President of TASK, and Nasir Shah, Chapter Chairman of IATO – J&K.
At the young age of 26 in 1956, Razdan recognized the potential of tourism in Kashmir. Despite lacking financial support, he took on the challenge of starting a travel company in a field that was still in its infancy.
With a strong desire to succeed, he founded Razdan Travel Service in 1957, now known as Razdan Holidays. His entrepreneurial spirit and dedication opened the enchanting realms of Kashmir and Ladakh to the world, laying the groundwork for a thriving tourism industry.
M.L. Razdan’s contributions to the tourism sector in Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh have been transformative. Fondly known as Mohan by his friends, he became a pioneer in the industry.
He was among the first tour operators to organize group tours to Ladakh when it was first opened in 1974 and conducted the first German group of trekkers from Padum to Lamayuru in 1977.
Additionally, he led a Swiss expedition team to Nun-Kun Peaks in Zanskar in August 1979. His foresight in bringing Bollywood to Kashmir during the 1970s and 1980s further cemented the region’s place in the hearts of many, making Srinagar, Gulmarg, and Pahalgam household names.
His efforts earned him numerous accolades, including the Gold Medal from the World Tourism Promotion Council in 1986, the Rajiv Gandhi Award for Excellence in Tourism in 1996, and several National Tourism Awards.
Beyond his professional achievements, Razdan was known for his generosity and compassion. He engaged in significant social work, uplifting many impoverished families and earning their enduring reverence.
Even during the turbulent times of 1989, his spirit remained unbroken.
As we celebrate Kashmir’s resurgence in tourism and Ladakh’s 50 years of tourism, we remember and honor the enduring legacy of M.L. Razdan—a true pioneer and inspiring human being.
“A man who set trends in tourism, a visionary with remarkable tenacity, who achieved success in many areas of life—a thorough professional, a caring husband, a wonderful father, an excellent host, and above all, a generous and warm-hearted human being.”
In recognition of his tireless services and immense contribution to the tourism and hospitality industry, the Indian Association of Tour Operators honored Late M.L. Razdan with the IATO Hall of Fame Award at the 39th IATO Annual Convention in Bhopal on August 30, 2024.
The award was received by his son, Sanjay Razdan, in the presence of trade members from J&K and Ladakh. TASK and IATO – J&K Chapter express their gratitude for Razdan’s invaluable contributions to the tourism industry of J&K and Ladakh.
