Chinar Strikers win Major Dhyan Chand hockey tournament

Srinagar: The Major Dhyan Chand Hockey Tournament, held from August 19 to August 29, 2024, at Polo View Hockey Stadium in Srinagar, concluded with a thrilling final. Chinar Strikers defeated Baramulla 1-0 to claim the title.

The tournament was organized by the Headquarters 31 Sub Area of Chinar Corps in collaboration with the J&K Sports Council and Hockey J&K, commemorating National Sports Day in honor of Major Dhyan Chand.

Liberty Group supported the event by providing hockey shoes and bags to the players. The league-based tournament saw participation from 12 teams across 10 districts in the Kashmir Valley. This edition featured 12 league matches and two semi-finals.

In the final, Ramandeep from Baramulla was named ‘Man of the Match,’ while Muneer from Shopian received the ‘Best Goalkeeper’ award. Kamal from Chinar Strikers was recognized as the ‘Player of the Tournament’ for his exceptional play throughout the competition.

An exhibition match was played between Baramulla and Srinagar before the finals to promote women’s hockey in the region.

The final was attended by the GOC Chinar Corps as the Chief Guest, with the GOC 31 Sub Area and Padma Shri awardee Pargat Singh, former Indian hockey team captain, as the Special Guest.
