Northern Army Commander meets Kupwara women cricket team

Srinagar:  In 2021, the Indian Army initiated a girls’ cricket championship in Kupwara under Operation Sadbhavana, featuring six participating teams. The event aimed to encourage participation, and by 2022, the number of teams increased to 14.

Recognizing the growing enthusiasm, the Pune-based NGO, ASEEM Foundation, proposed the idea of organizing practice and exhibition matches for selected girl cricket players in Pune.

In 2023, during the annual championship, 16 girls were selected for a special tour to Pune. These players received training from local athletes as part of Operation Sadbhavana, promoting their journey from Kupwara to Pune and back.

A team of 16 players, along with the Women Officer in Charge, JCO-IC, and two NCOs (NA and Coach), was flagged off from Patahiri Garrison on 12th Dec 23 for a 14-day tour scheduled from 15th to 24th Dec 2023.

The team met Lt Gen Upendra Dwivedi, AVSM, GOC-in-C, Northern Command on 14th Dec 23 before proceeding to Jammu for their onward journey to Pune.

The Army Commander commended the team members for their selection and encouraged them to embody the spirit of sportsmanship in their daily lives.

During their tour, the players will have the opportunity to compete at National-level Stadiums, engage with National and Ranji Players, and witness the Ind-Aus Match in Mumbai, along with local sightseeing.
