Srinagar: In a bid to improve road safety and ensure stricter adherence to traffic rules, the Jammu and Kashmir administration has decided to act tough against the habitual repeat offenders.
This comes as a response to the rising number of traffic violations and accidents in the region. “Ensure zero-tolerance towards repeated traffic violators,” J&K Chief Secretary Atal Dullo has directed the officers.
An official while talking to Precious Kashmir said, “Harsher penalties will be imposed on habitual offenders who repeatedly flout traffic regulations. The fines for various traffic offenses, such as speeding, jumping red lights, and driving without a license, have been significantly increased. For repeat offenders, the fines will be more.”
He said, “Drivers caught violating traffic rules again and again will face suspension of their driving licenses. The duration of the suspension will depend on the severity of the offense and the number of previous violations.”
According to the officials in severe cases, such as repeated drunk driving or causing accidents under the influence, the administration reserves the right to confiscate the offender’s vehicle. “For extremely dangerous violations leading to serious injuries or fatalities, repeat offenders may face imprisonment.”
The administration has already deployed additional traffic police personnel across the region to ensure better enforcement of the new rules. These officers have been equipped with advanced technology, including speed guns and high-resolution cameras, to detect violations and gather evidence.
Additionally, the administration has launched awareness campaigns to educate the public about the traffic rules and the importance of safe driving practices. This involves community engagement programs, school initiatives, and media outreach. “These measures are necessary to address the growing issue of traffic violations and accidents in Jammu and Kashmir,” said a an official, adding, “We are committed to ensuring the safety of our citizens on the roads and will not tolerate any disregard for traffic rules.”
“It’s about time the authorities took stricter action against traffic violators. These reckless drivers put everyone else on the road at risk. I hope these new rules will deter people from breaking the law,” said Farooq Ahmed, a resident.
An official said, “The implementation of rules is aimed at deterring the repeat offenders and create a culture of responsible driving. We are hopeful of achieving the intended goal of reducing traffic violations and making the roads of Jammu and Kashmir safer for everyone.”
