Legends Cricket League: J&K cricket set to get shot in its arm

Srinagar: The Jammu & Kashmir Sports Council is reportedly exploring the possibility of organizing a Legends Cricket League in the region, aiming to bring international cricketing glory to the Union Territory.
An official while talking to Precious Kashmir said that the proposed league is expected to feature some of the world’s most celebrated cricketers, including the likes of Chris Gayle, Virender Sehwag, Aaron Finch, Irfan Pathan, Yusuf Pathan, Harbhajan Singh, and other cricketing legends. “This bold initiative could mark a significant milestone in J&K’s cricketing history, catapulting the region onto the international cricketing arena while also serving as a source of inspiration for the budding cricketers in the UT,” the official added.
Notably, a passionate cricket-loving population, Jammu & Kashmir has always been a cricketing hub, fostering a talent pool that has produced players like Parvez Rasool, Manzoor Dar, Umran Malik and others. However, it has often remained on the fringes of international cricket, despite its undeniable potential.
A local cricketer said, “The Legends Cricket League could change that narrative. The tournament’s potential inclusion of star players from around the globe is expected to create considerable buzz, garnering attention from both cricket enthusiasts and international media. The names already associated with the event, including the indomitable Chris Gayle and the explosive Virender Sehwag, have the potential to draw thousands of cricket fans from within the region and beyond.”
“The idea behind organizing the Legends Cricket League in Jammu & Kashmir is to put the region on the global cricket map,” said an official from the J&K Sports Council. “We have an abundant pool of young, talented cricketers here, and such an event will not only inspire them but also provide them with a unique opportunity to learn from the best in the world.”
As part of the proposed plan, J&K Sports Council is said to be in discussion with multiple stakeholders to ensure the participation of international cricket stars which is subject to final confirmations and logistical arrangements, but preliminary talks are said to be quite promising. “Former prominent cricketers playing in J&K will provide young cricketers with the unique chance to learn from them, furthering their development. The league’s potential success hinges on effective organization, robust measures, and seamless coordination with the government and various sporting bodies. If everything falls into place, Jammu & Kashmir could soon see itself hosting some of the most celebrated cricketers of all time, underlining the region’s emergence as a serious contender in the world of cricket,” said an official.
