Srinagar: Introduction of the National Education Policy (NEP) has revolutionized the role of teachers across the country. Gone are the days of monotonous lectures and rote learning; instead, teachers are now embracing their roles as mentors who guide, inspire, and facilitate learning, while nurturing essential skills such as critical thinking, creativity, collaboration, and curiosity in students.
The introduction of NEP, according to the officials, has marked a paradigm shift in the approach to education in the country, including Jammu and Kashmir.
An educationist while talking to Precious Kashmir said, “The policy emphasizes on the importance of holistic development and a student-centric approach. One of the most significant changes brought about by the NEP has been the transformation of the teacher’s role from being an information dispenser to a facilitator of active learning.”
He said, “Under the new policy, teachers are encouraged to step away from traditional teaching methods that prioritize textbook-centered learning. Instead, they focus on fostering a dynamic classroom environment that encourages exploration and inquiry. This shift towards mentoring and facilitation has redefined the classroom experience, making it more engaging and interactive. Students are no longer passive recipients of information but active participants in their learning journey.”
Pertinently, one of the key aspects of this transformation is the emphasis on critical thinking. Teachers now pose thought-provoking questions, present real-world problems, and encourage students to analyze, evaluate, and synthesize information. This approach not only equips students with the skills to think independently but also nurtures a sense of curiosity and intellectual exploration.
“Creativity has also found a new home in classrooms across the country. Teachers are now incorporating a range of innovative teaching methods, such as project-based learning, discussions, debates, and collaborative activities. These methods not only allow students to showcase their creativity but also promote teamwork and communication skills,” said an observer.
He said, “Collaboration, another cornerstone of the NEP’s vision, has transformed classrooms into hubs of shared learning. Teachers are guiding students to work together on projects that require them to pool their knowledge, skills, and perspectives. This collaborative learning environment mirrors the dynamics of the modern workplace, where teamwork and communication are paramount.”
“The traditional boundaries of subjects have blurred, thanks to the NEP’s interdisciplinary approach. Teachers are encouraged to integrate concepts from different subjects, enabling students to see the interconnectedness of knowledge. This approach nurtures a holistic understanding of various subjects and encourages students to approach problems from diverse angles,” the observer added.
