KU V-C inaugurates national seminar on CEDAW

Srinagar: The School of Law, University of Kashmir, on Thursday  organised a one-day national seminar on Convention on Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW).

Vice-Chancellor Prof Nilofer Khan inaugurated the seminar, organised with the aim of raising awareness on issues concerning women’s rights and gender inequality, and to strengthen commitment to promote women’s rights and gender equality.

In her presidential address, Prof Nilofer said holding such important seminars is the need of the hour.

She reiterated that law professionals and students have an added responsibility to address various societal problems and raise awareness at grassroots about conventions like CEDAW.

The VC congratulated the School of Law for holding the seminar and hoped for fruitful deliberations which would address various aspects related to the seminar theme.

In his keynote address, Prof Bhushan Tilak Kaul , Senior Advocate, Supreme Court and  Former Chairman, Delhi Judicial Academy said that CEDAW sets out in detail the prohibition of discrimination against women in all aspects of life.

Prof Irshad Ahmad Nawchoo, Dean, Research, University of Kashmir and Registrar Dr Nisar A Mir also shared the dais and highlighted the role of institutions to ensure protection of rights of women, especially at workplaces, and to make sure that they face no discrimination whatsoever.

Prof Beauty Banday, Head and Dean ,School of Law, delivered the welcome address and highlighted objectives of the seminar.

Dr Shehnaz presented the vote of thanks while proceedings of the session were conducted by Hakim Yasir Abbas.

The inaugural session was followed by five technical sessions where the participants presented their research papers.
