2 militants killed in Nowgam encounter

Srinagar: Two militants, affiliated with Ansar Ghazwat-ul-Hind (AGuH), were killed in a brief gunfight in Nowgam area of Srinagar on Wednesday evening, police said.

“Acting on specific information generated by Police regarding the presence of (militants) in Dangerpora area of Nowgam, a joint cordon and search operation was launched by Police and Army’s 50RR in the area,” a police spokesperson said.

“During the search operation, as the joint search party approached towards the suspected spot, the hiding (militants) fired indiscriminately upon the joint search party which was retaliated effectively, leading to an encounter.”

In the ensuing encounter, he said, two militants were killed and were later identified as Aijaz Rasool Najar of Pulwama and Shahid Ahmad alias Abu Hamza of Malpora Budgam.

“As per police records, both were categorized (militants)and were linked with AGuH. Both were involved in several cases including attacks on Police/security forces and civilian atrocities,” he said. Besides, they were also involved in recent attack on an outside labourer namely Muneer-ul-Islam of West Bengal on 2 September at Ugergund Newa area of Pulwama.

“Incriminating materials, arms & ammunition including 01 AK series rifle, 02 Pistols and 01 Grenade were recovered from the site of encounter,” he said, adding, “All the recovered materials have been taken into case records for further investigation.” (GNS)
