Srinagar: The delimitation commission’s final order on delimitation of Assembly and parliamentary constituencies of Jammu & Kashmir Union Territory is likely to be tabled in the Parliament in the upcoming monsoon session.

The final order unveiled by the Commission on May 5, 2022 is likely to be laid before the Lok Sabha in the session starting from July 18.

The report is being tabled in the Parliament as “The Delimitation Act-2002″ mandates that “every such order shall be laid before the House of the People and the Legislative Assemblies of the States concerned”.

The final order of the commission has already been sent to the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha secretariats. “The final order   of the Commission has also been sent to the secretariats of the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha for being laid before the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha. Copy of the final order   was also sent to the chief secretary of the Union Territory of   Jammu and Kashmir for laying it on the table of the Legislative Assembly of the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir,” reads the document in possession of The Precious Kashmir.

In its final order on May 5, the panel headed by former Supreme Court judge Justice (retd.) Ranjana Desai earmarked 43 seats for the Jammu region and 47 for Kashmir.

Earlier, Jammu had 37 seats, and Kashmir had 46.

Out of the seven new seats, six were allotted to Jammu and one to Kashmir.

For the first time, the panel reserved nine seats for scheduled tribes (ST) in the Jammu & Kashmir assembly. It also reserved seven seats for SCs in J&K UT Assembly.

The three-member delimitation commission, which also comprised then chief election commissioner Sushil Chandra and  State Election Commissioner of J&K KK Sharma, was set up in March 2020, with five parliament members from the UT as associate members.

It was given two extensions before it finalized the exercise.
