60-yr-old civilian killed, 23 injured in Sgr grenade attack

Srinagar: A 60-year-old civilian was killed while 23 others sustained injuries in a grenade blast at busy Hari Singh High Street (HSHS) market in Srinagar on Sunday, officials said.

They said a grenade was lobbed by militants on security forces at the Hari Singh High Street market which exploded on the road wounding 24 persons, including a police cop.

The injured were shifted to Shri Maharaja Hari Singh (SMHS) Hospital where one of the critically wounded civilian succumbed to his injuries.

The deceased has been identified as Mohammad Aslam Makhdoomi a resident of Makhdoom Sahab Srinagar.

One of the injured girl is stated to be critical.

The security forces cordoned off the area and launched searches to nab the attackers.

Srinagar Police also issued an advisory for the public stating that in light of the grenade throwing in busy Sunday market near Amira Kadal bridge, all the civilians are required to be vigilant and report any suspected activity”.

Meanwhile, several political leaders have condemned the attack.

Moreover, police in a statement said that a grenade incident at Amira Kadal area of Srinagar, 23 civilians and one police personnel received splinter injuries while as one injured civilian succumbed to his injuries.

A police spokesman said that militants hurled a grenade at a civilian hotspot in Amira Kadal area of Srinagar. In this incident, 23 civilians and one police personnel identified as John Mohammad received splinter injuries.

“All the injured were shifted to hospital for the treatment of their injuries however, one elderly civilian identified as Mohammad Aslam Makhdoomi son of Mohammad Amin resident of Makhdoom Sahib age about 60 years succumbed to his injuries.”

Senior police officers immediately reached at the spot and the area has been cordoned off.

IGP Kashmir said that Police is working hard for identification and arrest of persons involved in today’s grenade attack and that it will smash this grenade throwing module at an earliest.

He also said that police have got some vital clues and investigation is rigorously going on in the right direction.

Regarding the incident, police has registered case under relevant sections of law and investigation has been initiated.
