Shopian acid attacker held: Police

Srinagar: Police on Friday said a youth who threw acid on a girl in Shopian district of south Kashmir on October 5 has been arrested.

“On 05-10-2021 Police Station Keller received information that one person namely Waseem Ali Shah son of Ali Mohammad Shah resident of Aadoo Keegam had attacked a girl with acid, resulting in severe burn injuries to her body. She was immediately shifted to hospital for the treatment,” a police spokesman said in a statement.

Accordingly , he said, a case (FIR No. 84/2021) under relevant sections of law was registered at Police Station Keller and investigation was set into motion.

“During the course of investigation, all legal and medical required formalities were completed.  Multiple raids were conducted by Police to nab the accused person involved in the instant case,” he said, adding, “After strenuous efforts by Police, the accused person involved in the commission of crime has been arrested.”

He has been shifted to police station where he remains in custody, the spokesman said. “Further investigation into the case is going on,” he said, adding, “General public has lauded the efforts and prompt action of the Police. Police has resolved to act tough against inimical elements.”
