Army foils attempt to smuggle in drugs, narcotic worth Rs 25 crore

Baramulla: Alert troops foiled a major attempt to push huge consignment of drugs from across the Line of Control when they recovered contraband narcotic substance worth Rs 25 crore near Line of Control (LoC) in Uri sector in this north Kashmir district, a senior police officer said.

He said troops are on high alert to foil any such attempt from other side to send drugs for militant funding in Jammu and Kashmir.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Baramulla, Rayees Ahmad Bhat told reporters here that Army troops noticed some suspicious movement near the LoC in Uri sector on October 2. However, when they, who had come into this side, saw movement of our own troops they escaped back into other side of the fence. During the search of the area troops recovered huge quantity of drugs and other articles which clearly had Pakistan marking, SSP said.

In reply to a question the SSP said no one has been arrested. The drugs were dropped there after they saw the movement of troops, he said.

Troops have handed over the drugs to police, the SSP said adding we have registered a case and taken up the investigation.

He said the cost of the drugs would be between Rs 20 crore to Rs 25 crore.
