1000 kgs poppy straw recovered from 3 trucks on Sgr-Leh road

Srinagar: Over 1000 kgs of poppy straw were recovered from three trucks from Punjab on Srinagar-Leh national highway, officials of Anti Narcotic Task Force (ANTF) said.

A tip off was received that Poppy straw was being transported to Leh in trucks from Kashmir valley; the ANTF officials told a press conference today.

They said immediately after receiving the information, a team was constituted and rushed to Sonamarg in the central Kashmir district of Ganderbal.

With the help of Ganderbal police, two trucks bearing registration numbers PB 07-AL 2229, and HP 55B- 0711 were intercepted and during their search ANTF and police team recovered 800 kg of poppy straw like substance.

During the questioning of drivers, it came to the fore that one vehicle carrying poppy straw had already left for Leh.

The truck was intercepted near Leh and poppy straw like substance weighing in quintals was recovered.

Two individuals driving the trucks have been arrested from the Valley and one from Leh so far.

Official said that a total 1000 kgs of Poppy Straw has been recovered which is one of the biggest catch in recent past.

A case under relevant sections of law has been registered, they said, adding that more arrests are expected. (UNI)
