Srinagar: The third wave of COVID-19 could be on its way to Jammu and Kashmir as more than 50 cases of Delta plus variant have been reported in a few states across the country.

When the COVID-19 second wave was relenting the experts had sounded an alert about a possible third wave and the virus mutating again.Ā  Till now, no case of Delta Plus variant has been reported in the Valley but the people cannot be complacent.

A medico while talking to Precious Kashmir said, ā€œThe new variant has arrived and it can sneak into the Valley anytime. We need to remain prepared. The vaccination holds the key. People also need to follow the COVID-19 sops in letter and spirit to keep the virus at bay.ā€

On Monday, Deputy Commissioner (DC) Srinagar, Ajaz Asad paid surprise visit to the city shopping complexes and said that all unvaccinated persons visiting any shopping store/complex/ malls in Srinagar will have to undergo for COVID-19 testing and after his report comes negative will be given entry in the said shopping mall. Those having a prior 48 hours negative report will not be subjected to repeat testing.

The administration in Kashmir is gearing up to tackle the ā€œpossible third waveā€ which could break out and the advisories are being issued on a daily basis. ā€œThe second wave taught us many lessons. The alarm has already been sounded. No chances can be taken. People should bear in mind that the situation can turn ugly if they donā€™t follow the SOPs,ā€ the medico added.

He said that at present the COVID-19 cases are on decline but it doesnā€™t mean that the pandemic has ended. ā€œDuring the second wave hospitals witnessed huge rush of patients and all the major hospitals in Kashmir had been turned into Covid hospitals. Keeping the virus at bay is in our own hands. For time being people should refrain from organizing big weddings as the marriage season in the Valley is on. There is no need to travel unnecessarily. Wearing masks is mandatory and we should make it a habit,ā€ the medico added.

An expert said, ā€œThe third wave can be contained if we remain careful. Till now we have already witnessed two waves and are aware about how fast this deadly virus spreads. To stop the Covid from spreading is in our own hands. We cannot just wait for the government to act. We have to be cautious. Eid-ul-Fitr is just 20-days away. We should ensure that we maintain discipline rather than thronging the markets.ā€
