Army pays tribute to soldier killed in Shopian gunfight

Srinagar:  Army Sunday paid tributes to Havildar Pinku Kumar, who was killed in a gunfight with militants at Shopian in south Kashmir yesterday, in a solemn ceremony at BB Cantt.

Lt Gen DP Pandey, Chinar Corps Commander and all ranks paid homage to the soldier on behalf of the Nation.

According to defence spokesman, Havildar Pinku Kumar was part of an anti-militancy operation at Wangam, Shopian yesterday.

“At around 7 pm, a cordon and search operation was launched in the village and at around 08:15 pm, militants fired indiscriminately on the search party. Havildar Pinku was hit by a gunshot wound in head and grievously injured. His Bleeding was controlled with combat first aid and he was evacuated to 92 Base Hospital for treatment where he succumbed to his injuries,” he said.

Late Havildar Pinku Kumar, 38, had joined the Army in 2001. He belonged to Village Luhari of Barout Tehsil, Bagpat District in Uttar Pradesh and is survived by his wife, two daughters and one son.

The mortal remains of deceased were taken for last rites to his native place.

“In this hour of grief, the Army stands in solidarity with the bereaved family and remains committed to their dignity and wellbeing,” the defence spokesman said.
