Trump touts rollback of Biden EPA rules

Washington: President Donald Trump on Thursday announced the rollback of two Biden-era environmental regulations governing refrigerants and cooling systems, claiming the move would save Americans more than $2 billion annually, lower grocery prices and protect hundreds of thousands of jobs. At an event in the Oval Office of the White House, alongside EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin and executives from major grocery chains, Trump described the previous rules as “ridiculous, unnecessary and costly”. Under the Biden administration’s “technology transition rule”, companies were required to adopt newer refrigerants and replace large-scale cooling systems in supermarkets, restaurants and transport fleets. Trump argued the changes sharply increased costs for businesses and consumers. “Many grocery stores and restaurants had no choice but to replace their refrigerators entirely,” Trump said. “They went out of business, half of them. And these costs rose; Americans faced higher grocery prices and reduced access to critical medical supplies.” Trump said the reforms would “deliver significant financial relief, saving American families and businesses more than $2.4 billion each year”. He added that the rollback would lower grocery prices, reduce transportation costs and cut air-conditioning expenses “at no detriment at all to our country”. Zeldin said the Trump administration was reversing what he called a “rushed, frantic, reckless sprint” by the Biden administration to phase out existing refrigeration systems. He claimed the EPA changes would safeguard 350,000 jobs and save supermarkets alone nearly $800 million. Executives from major retail chains echoed the concerns. Kroger CEO Greg Foran said an “orderly transition” in equipment standards would help supermarkets avoid major capital costs and keep food prices lower for consumers. Kevin McDaniel, a Piggly Wiggly franchise owner operating stores across Florida, Alabama and Georgia, said replacing refrigeration systems could cost between $800,000 and $1.5 million per store. “You would have seen grocery prices soar,” he said. Trump repeatedly insisted the newer equipment was “inferior” and claimed it “doesn’t cool the food properly”. He also dismissed environmental concerns tied to the rollback. “There is no environmental concern,” Trump said. “It’s not going to have any impact on the environment.” During a lengthy question-and-answer session, Trump also confirmed he had postponed signing a planned executive order on artificial intelligence. “I didn’t like certain aspects of it, I postponed it,” he said. “I don’t want to do anything that’s going to get in the way of that lead.” Trump added that the United States was “leading China” in AI development and said the sector was creating “tremendous numbers of jobs”. –IANS lkj/dan

IPL 2026: Very happy to get the momentum, says Gill after GT secure top two finish

Ahmedabad: Gujarat Titans skipper Shubman Gill said he was delighted to see his side regain momentum at the right time, after sealing a top‑two finish in IPL 2026 with a thumping 89-run win over Chennai Super Kings at the Narendra Modi Stadium on Thursday. GT’s huge win was set up by Gill, B Sai Sudharsan, and Jos Buttler hitting fifties, while Mohammed Siraj, Kagiso Rabada, and Rashid Khan picked three wickets each. “Very important going into the playoffs. Very happy to get the momentum. If I look at the games, even the first couple of games, we were getting close, and it was about adding that extra 5 percent, which we got in the Delhi game. “Very happy with the way I am batting. Whenever you get out, you feel you could do more. Yes, the fielding was better than in the last game. When you are playing such an intense game, the emotions come out. Neck is fine. “It is about keeping up with the good things we are doing, and that is the key thing for us. After 12 games, we were at number one but lost the last two games and could not finish in the top two. Very grateful for the fans that turn up and support us,” said Gill at the conclusion of the game. Player of the Match Siraj said he had worked hard to rediscover his rhythm with the new ball. “The ball is coming out nicely. I was sitting out for most games in the World Cup, and I was working hard in the nets. I wasn’t bowling well in the first few games, but I have gotten my rhythm back. “I work on everything from my rhythm, yorkers, and bowling at different phases. On a red soil pitch, I would always try to get Sanju (Samson) driving. I don’t try much and keep things simple, even if I can keep the pressure, then Rabada can pick the wickets.” Rabada, meanwhile, praised the batting unit and spoke about his approach. “I realise now (that I’ll be on a hat-trick next game). Our top three were phenomenal, scored the bulk of the runs, and put up a good total we could defend. “It’s about doing your best every game, no matter how you feel. As long as you rock up and are not afraid of being competitive, that’s all I try to do. I’ve bowled in all three phases. For me, it’s whatever the coach and team require of me. We’ve got a while now. Feet up, I guess, get stuck in your hotel room, watch some series, and hit the ground running (for Qualifier 1).” –IANS nr/bsk/

US-India trade entering high‑growth phase: Report

New Delhi:  US-India trade is entering a high‑growth phase and could reach $500 billion by 2030 driven by stronger supply chains, technology collaboration and deeper integration across manufacturing and services, a report said on Thursday. The report from KPMG in India and AMCHAM said bilateral trade has expanded steadily in recent years, with India’s cumulative exports to the US reaching $87.3 billion in FY26, accounting for 20 per cent of total merchandise exports. Electronics, textiles, pharmaceuticals, machinery and gems and jewellery continued to anchor bilateral trade. “As global value chains realign, India’s scale, cost advantage and talent base position it as a trusted partner for U.S. businesses. The next phase will be defined by execution, translating policy momentum into resilient, long term economic outcomes,” said Neeraj Bansal, Partner and Head- India Global, KPMG in India. With strong momentum across key sectors such as electronics, pharmaceuticals and high-value services, the focus is now on translating opportunity into execution through tighter supply linkages, regulatory coherence and predictable market access. The report outlined that the U.S.-India corridor is emerging as a key engine of global growth, underpinned by rising trade volumes, expanding sector-specific linkages and increasing strategic alignment across manufacturing, technology, energy and talent mobility. As trade expands across key sectors and new opportunities emerge in manufacturing, energy and technology, the focus must shift towards execution, strengthening supply chains, improving market access and ensuring regulatory predictability, said Manoj Kumar Vijai, Non-Executive Chairman, Office Managing Partner, Mumbai. India supplies nearly 40 per cent of generic drugs used in the U.S., reinforcing its role in global healthcare supply chains. The report noted that strengthening logistics, regulatory coherence and standards alignment remain critical to deeper economic integration for both countries. Semiconductors, defence and clean energy are expected to drive the next wave of growth opportunities, it forecasted, adding that strategic priorities include manufacturing integration, technology assurance, MSME value-chain upgrade and energy security. —IANS aar/pk

HM Amit Shah recalls emotional interaction with Bastar tribals

New Delhi: Union Home Minister Amit Shah shared a deeply moving experience from his recent visit to Bastar, Chhattisgarh, where he interacted with nearly 400 tribal people, describing it as a source of profound personal satisfaction that surpasses the applause of massive public rallies. In a heartfelt post on his X handle, accompanied by a touching video of the interaction, Amit Shah revealed the emotional connection he felt while walking and interacting with the tribal communities. “For an individual who works with sensitivity in the realm of politics, the sight of a glimmer of hope on the faces of our tribal brothers and sisters brings a sense of self-satisfaction that far exceeds the gratification derived from delivering a speech before hundreds of thousands,” he said. The Home Minister was in the region to inaugurate the ‘Shaheed Gundadhur Seva Dera’ in Netnar village, named in honour of the martyr Gundadhur. He described how the faces of tribal men, women, and children reflected a new ray of hope, especially now that Bastar has been freed from the clutches of Naxal violence. Amit Shah emphasised that for a sensitive political worker, the fulfilment of engaging directly with tribal people face-to-face holds far greater value than addressing large crowds at political gatherings. One moment in particular stood out in both his post and the shared video. Amit Shah recounted an emotional conversation with a young girl from Bastar who told him, “Hum Bach Gaye” (“We survived”), referring to the end of Naxal terror in the area. “When a little girl from Bastar tells me, after it has become free of Naxals, ‘We survived’, that joy surpasses millions of joys,” he said, visibly moved by her words. The video shows the Home Minister mingling warmly with tribal families, listening to their stories, and sharing smiles that reflected the transformation in the region. After years of fear and conflict, the tribals of Bastar are now experiencing peace, development, and renewed hope — something Amit Shah said fills his heart with unmatched contentment. This rare glimpse into the Home Minister’s thoughts highlights his personal commitment towards the welfare of tribal communities. By choosing to spend meaningful time with them rather than focusing solely on large public events, Amit Shah has sent a message of empathy and dedication. The initiative to set up service centres like ‘Gundadhur Seva Dera’ reflects the government’s commitment to bringing governance and development to the remotest tribal areas, ensuring that the fruits of peace reach those who suffered the most during the dark days of Naxalism. –IANS sktr/dan
