German minister commits suicide

FRANKFURT AM MAIN: Thomas Schaefer, the finance minister of Germany’s Hesse state, has committed suicide apparently after becoming “deeply worried” over how to cope with the economic fallout from the coronavirus, state premier Volker Bouffier said on Sunday (March 29).

Schaefer, 54, was found dead near a railway track on Saturday. The Wiesbaden prosecution’s office said they believe he died by suicide.

“We are in shock, we are in disbelief and, above all, we are immensely sad,” Mr Bouffier said in a recorded statement.

Hesse is home to Germany’s financial capital Frankfurt, where major lenders like Deutsche Bank and Commerzbank have their headquarters. The European Central Bank is also located in Frankfurt.

A visibly shaken Bouffier recalled that Schaefer, who was Hesse’s finance chief for 10 years, had been working “day and night” to help companies and workers deal with the economic impact of the pandemic.

“Today, we have to assume that he was deeply worried,” said Bouffier, a close ally of Chancellor Angela Merkel.

“It’s precisely during this difficult time that we would have needed someone like him,” he added.

Popular and well-respected, Mr Schaefer had long been touted as a possible successor to Mr Bouffier.

Like Bouffier, Mr Schaefer belonged to Dr Merkel’s centre-right CDU party.

He leaves behind a wife and two children.

COVID 19: As numbers increase, people hiding travel history puts Kashmir on edge

Srinagar: The surge in the number of COVID-19 patients in Kashmir has sent alarm bells ringing across Kashmir. The worst fear that the virus may have spread within the community seems to have come true.
Since the day the drive to combat the COVID-19 has started in Kashmir, authorities have been appealing the people to come forward and disclose their travel histories but still many people are in a hiding.
The COVID-19 claiming the second life in Kashmir has created panic as the 65-year old victim from north Kashmir’s Tangmarg area had no travel history. “It seems that the worst fears about the COVID-19 spreading into the community have come true,” said an observer.
He said, “Had the people disclosed their travel histories on time this chain could have been broken. Now we don’t know how many more have been affected by this deadly virus.”
Reports suggest that there could be many more positive cases across Kashmir and next few days are very crucial.
The Jammu and Kashmir government on Sunday said that concealing travel history is a crime. “Contact tracing teams reporting that despite so many appeals people still hiding travel histories. Couple which tested positive in Srinagar yesterday hid international travel history. This is criminal. Please note- an entire society is being put at risk,” The J&K UT spokesman Rohit Kansal wrote on the twitter.
The Divisional commissioner Kashmir Pandurang Kondbarao Pole once again appealed to the people, who have returned from foreign countries and have not disclosed their travel history, to come forward and register their names so that they could be quarantined well in time. “Those hiding their travel history should come forward within 2-days. If after two days, anybody is found hiding his/her travel history he/she will be dealt with sternly,” a local news agency quoted  Divisional Commissioner  as having said.
A senior official while talking to Precious Kashmir said, “People need to understand that they have not committed any crime by visiting any other State or the country. The administration wants to help them by getting them tested and sending them for quarantine. It’s just a matter of 14-days. After that they can once again mingle with the people.”
He said, “People of Kashmir should learn from Ladakhis. Soon after the outbreak of COVID-19 in Ladakh, everyone who had a travel history came forward and got himself tested. In the past 10-day not a single case has been found positive. Ladakh to a great extent has succeeded in flattening the Coronavirus curve.”
“Even in Jammu region, things are better than Kashmir. By hiding our travel histories we are doing a big disservice to our people and the society,” the official added.

Coronavirus: Srinagar Admin Reaches Out To Those In Need Of Food And Medicines

SRINAGAR: While there are elaborate measures in operation in the district for containment of the coronavirus infection the Srinagar administration has also set into motion extension efforts reaching out to all residents including citizens and outsiders to provide them essential commodities at their doorsteps.

In addition to foodgrains and LPG to citizens – distribution of which was started Saturday – these efforts also include reaching out to citizens in need of other important food items and medicines and to migrant workers residing in the district.

In addition to this the district administration is also reaching out to citizens in need and providing essential items as demanded. This is being done under an initiative named ‘social security outreach’.

Under this initiative over 300 families in need raising requests at dedicated helpline numbers were provided free food items and medicines. Of these over 190 families were provided food packets and over 100 families free medicines as demanded. Other requests are under process and will be completed in due course.

The provision of free food items and medicines to those in need is going on at the same time as PDS distribution of essential commodities including foodgrains and LPG to citizens.

So far since the distribution was started Saturday the administration has covered some 23 thousand households distributing totals of 10,500 quintals of rice and 630 quintals of wheat in 6 out of 34 sub-zones of the district. J&K Sets Up Helplines For Migrant Workers, More Needed

Srinagar: The J&K Labour Department has set up helplines for migrant labourers who arrived here before the lockdown was announced, according to officials, here on Sunday.

The J&K Information Department tweeted: “The Labour Department sets up 24X7 helpline numbers for migrant labourers who arrived in J&K prior to the lockdown announced in view of #COVID19. S Shafi (8899546373) & Ansar Ahmad (7006286174) for the Kashmir division, and Shivika Sharma (9149691329) & SP Singh (7051986422) for the Jammu division.

However, the migrant labourers’ plight needs more than just setting up the helpline.

On Saturday, a couple from outside J&K was thrown out by the landlord in the Kulgam district. The houseowner said he had no option but to tell the couple to vacate because of the pressure from neighbours who threatened saying the couple carried the coronavirus to the Valley.

“I have been treating the woman as my daughter and would never tell them to vacate. But what can I do? I am an old man”, he said.

The couple was thrown out despite that they carried a government hospital’s diagnostic sheet that said the couple had been screened and were free of any coronavirus symptoms.

The police is believed to have intervened to provide shelter and food to the couple who reportedly lived in the bathroom of an abandoned bus stand without food for two days.

There are scores of such labourers who could face the prospect of being thrown out of rented accommodations, provided by contractors and brick kiln owners to employ them in their businesses.

It would be unethical to remove them to isolation/quarantine centres on the pretext that they would be provided food and shelter there. They need to be housed in makeshift accommodations and then screened or tested in a systematic manner.

Washing hands by just herding them into an isolation/quarantine centres would be unethical since most women among these have children too.

Given the scenario, the Labour Department has a Herculean task ahead since the number of such migrants runs into hundreds.
