Covid-19: Testing & Recoveries

Ever since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, the government’s focus has been on recoveries and it highlights it prominently in the daily bulletin released every day. 2086 patients have recovered as on June 12 as per the data released officially. Of them, 266 patients were recovered and discharged from various hospitals on June 12.

Among other factors, the recoveries give some kind of consolation to frontline warriors, and for the people who run the health system in the Jammu and Kashmir. However, it is important to note that the total recoveries and the number of active cases are not comparable metrics. The total recoveries account for everyone who has recovered from the pathogen since the outbreak and it is no surprise that the number of recoveries will progressively increase, unless of course there is gross mismanagement of the health system.

Any patient discharged has to stay under home quarantine for a period of almost two weeks and they are strictly barred to move outside. The administration must ensure it and may take help from private players to do it.

Presently, the death rate in J&K is very low given the fact it is counted against the infections that have been confirmed, through testing. As the administration is aware, there are many more people, possibly even more than the confirmed number, who are carrying the infection, but are unknown because they have not been tested or remain asymptomatic. In any sizable population, the exact number of people infected during an epidemic may never be known.  Some expert findings suggest that thousands of people across India including have become infected and have recovered from the infection without knowing it. In such a scenario, there is a need to distinguish people with mild symptoms or have no symptoms, from sick patients. Under all circumstances, the health system must be responsive to those who need it to help them recover. The government must keep the recovery rate high and death rate low.  By now, the administration and doctors at the forefront of the fight against the covid-19 have got the measure on how to manage these issues.

COVID-19: People keep fingers crossed as markets open, traffic resumes

Afaq Bhat
Srinagar, June 11:
As the markets have started  opening up in Kashmir and semblance of normalcy is returning nearly after 3-months of lockdown, people and the experts have kept their fingers crossed.
The authorities had imposed a complete lockdown in Kashmir soon after the first COVID-19 case was detected in Srinagar’s old city in the month of March. Since then Jammu and Kashmir has reported more than 4500 positive cases and more than 50 people have died due to this deadly virus. Many people have recovered also.
An expert while talking to Precious Kashmir said, “The lockdown period provided medicos and scientists with a chance to study the virus. The very important factor which has come to fore is that the mortality rate is no that high and if people take the precautions this virus can be kept at bay. Maintaining social distance, using masks and sanitizers is mandatory in the fight against the COVID-19.”
An analyst said that markets and transport opening up means that people will start moving and it means that virus will also move. “We have entered into such a stage where we will have to take more precautions now. During the lockdown no one was moving but now situation will be different. Hand hygiene and wearing masks and avoiding unnecessary travel are important tips. People need to bear in mind that they cannot mingle around till a vaccine appears in the market.”
He said, “We have to bear in mind that only lockdown has been lifted the COVID-19 has not gone. The virus is very much there and we will have to learn to live with it. Authorities have played their role, now it’s upto the people how they will respond to the situation.”
An observer said that decision to revive the economy has been taken in principle. “Now, how it will be implemented remains to be seen. A few positive developments about clinical trials of anti-COVID drugs and the vaccines being in final stages have made everyone optimistic about solution being found very soon,” he added.
“Almost everyone is of the opinion that life is not going to be same now. The world has changed. Now it remains to be seen that how fast will people adapt to the change. We are into the last phase of lockdown and the COVID-19 curve has not flattened yet.”
it may be recalled that recently Union Health Ministry claimed that recovery rate has risen tremendously. It said the number of infected persons is equal to the number of patients who have recovered. “So, things are looking up and gloom gradually seems to be disappearing,” the observer added.

COVID-19 crisis turning point to build a self-reliant India: PM Modi

New Delhi, June 11: Terming the crisis that has arisen in the country due to the COVID outbreak as an opportunity, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday said that any such crisis can prove to be a turning point to build a self- reliant India.

Delivering the inaugural address of the 95th annual plenary session of the Indian Chamber of Commerce (ICC) through video conferencing here, the PM said, ‘India is putting up a brave front along with the entire world amid the COVID crisis.

Such difficult times have made India more resolute. Determination, will power and unity are the strength of the nation which makes the country to fight all the crises. Any crisis provides us with an opportunity to turn it into a turning point to build a self- reliant India.’

The Prime Minister said self reliance has been an aspiration of India for years.

‘When I see the population as a whole in India, I see youthfulness, I see motivation and hope. I see aspirations and dreams. And I also see the resolve in people to turn a challenge into an opportunity.

I see people thinking kaash (I wish) we were self-reliant in medical equipment, I wish we were self-reliant in manufacturing PPE kits, I wish we were self-reliant in defence production, I wish we were self-reliant in manufacturing all that we buy or consume. I see countless such kaash in Indians today. The solution to all this can only come from Atma Nirbhar Bharat,’ the PM said.

‘India’s growth story will come only from this (self-reliance). It is the only way that will propel us forward in the 21st century. It is the only way that India, which is today an importing nation, will first become self-reliant, and then aim to become a big exporting nation. That is the vision that will take us forward.

The time has come for every street, every village, every district, every state, and the nation as a whole to take a pledge to ensure that we as a nation must become self-reliant at all levels,’the PM said.

The PM said it is time for bold decisions and bold investments, to prepare a globally competitive domestic supply chain and not for conservative approaches.

The Prime Minister said “Goal of self-reliance has been paramount in the policy and practice of the country and now the Corona pandemic has taught us a lesson on how to speed it up.

“It is from this lesson – Atma Nirbhar Bharat campaign has started.” he said.

Modi said, we must all work towards making India an exporter of all products which it is currently forced to import.

Appreciating the efforts of small traders, he said ,’When we buy local produce from them, we are not just paying them for their goods and services, but are rewarding their contributions.’

Quoting Swami Vivekananda that ‘The simplest method to be worked upon at present is to induce Indians to use their own produce and get markets for Indian products in other countries’ he said ‘ this path shown by Swami Vivekananda is an inspiration for India in post-COVID world.’

The Prime Minister listed the major reforms announced under Atma Nirbhar Bharat campaign like expanding the scope of definition of MSMEs, arranging special funds to support MSMEs, decision related to IBC, creation of Project Development Cells for fast tracking of investments.

Hailing the recent policy decisions taken in the field of agriculture, the Prime Minister said, ‘the agricultural economy has been liberated from years of restrictions. Now the farmers of India have the freedom to sell their product, their produce anywhere in the country.’

Cabinet Secretary reviews COVID mitigation efforts

Calls for fatality mitigation, proactive medical response

India’s COVID -19 tally nears 2.9 lakh, death toll 8102

Not in community spread stage yet: ICMR

New Delhi, June 11: India’s Coronavirus tally rose to 2,86,579 on Thursday after nearly 10,000 fresh cases were reported in a day, while Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) asserted that the country is ‘definitely’ not in the phase of community transmission, yet.

Dr Balram Bhargava, ICMR said that with Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) prevalence as low as less than 1 per cent in small districts in a large country like India, the nation is ‘definitely’ not in the community transmission stage.

However, the death toll registered a sharp spike with 357 succumbing to the virus in the past 24 hours, pushing the count to 8,102.

Leaders of the three BJP-ruled Delhi municipal corporations on Thursday said that 2,098 Covid victims have been cremated in the capital.

The BJP has been continuously accusing the Arvind Kejriwal government of hiding the number of corona deaths in Delhi. As of June 10, the Delhi government’s corona death toll is only 984.

While talking about community transmission, Health Ministry Joint Secretary Lav Agarwal said, “If we get caught in grammar and let go of field action, we will suffer.”

Meanwhile, National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has sent a notice to the Delhi Government and Union Health Ministry over a complaint alleging mismanagement of the pandemic situation in the national capital that escalated the situation in the city.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said the crisis of Corona remains all over the world. ‘The whole world is fighting it. Our country is fighting with Corona Warriors.’

He said, ‘Sometimes time tests us. Sometimes many difficulties come simultaneously. But we have also experienced that in such a scenario, our work and experience guarantees a bright future’.

In an important milestone for the first time since the outbreak of Covid-19 in India, the number of ‘recovered’ cases exceeded the number of ‘active’ cases on Wednesday.

As of now, there are 1,37,448 active cases while 1,41,029 people have been cured/discharged/migrated.
