Bandipora killings: Fear grips BJP workers, 4 resign in 8 days in north Kashmir

Each and every party worker can’t be provided with security, issue already taken up with police top brass: Ashok Koul

Tasaduq Hussain

Srinagar, July 16:  A week after the killing of BJP’s young leader, his brother and father, the gross root level workers have started to resign from the party stating that the party has failed to elevate them and the local administration continues to ignore them.

In the past eight days, at least four ruling BJP workers/leaders resigned from the party alone including a woman from north Kashmir districts of Baramulla and Kupwara.

Talking to news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), the aggrieved party leaders and workers alleged that the party has failed to facilitate and work for the interest of poor people and the unending threats and security concerns bother them which forced them to quit from the party.

Mubeena Begum, a woman BJP worker, who resigned from the party said that since she joined the party she could deliver what she had promised to the people of her area. “Party also didn’t support the way it should have and the local administration don’t pay heed to our concerns. This is the reason why I am resigning,” she said.

Aijaz Ahmad, another party leader who resigned earlier said that the local administration never accepted them as BJP leaders and workers and that became the main reason why they failed to deliver. “I still remember we have worked under immense pressure and threats but successfully managed to conduct BDC elections still we were left unrecognized,” he said.

Bashir Ahmed Malik, a Handwara resident, who also resigned from the BJP party, said that there are some personal issues behind his resignation and his family members also forced him to give up the post fearing the ongoing threats.

“I have daughters back home who are my responsibility and now there are threats that actually bother me. The security apprehension is a hurdle before anyone these days”, he told KNO

J&K BJP General Secretary (Org), Ashok Koul that the life threats can’t be ruled out at this time.

“There is a fear among our workers. Some posts are threatening in which they have been warned of dire consequences,” he said. “These leaders were part of different political parties who in the past have worked for their benefits but BJP doesn’t serve for personal interests since the local administration appropriately knows what has to be done and political leaders shouldn’t interfere in those affairs.”

As far as the security, Koul said that BJP has already taken up the issue with the police top brass and the security review of each and every political worker is being conducted. “Every single worker cant be provided with the security cover, but those who have genuine threats and are vulnerable, will be given a proper cover very soon,” he said—(KNO)

Complacency Proving Dangerous

J&K has more covid-19 cases than 19 other states and UTs in India.  Among the UTs, J&K has second largest number of covid-19 cases after New Delhi. Neighboring states like Punjab have 8511 and Himachal Pradesh 1309 as per the data revealed by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare Government of India. So far there are around 11.5K cases in J&K while deaths have crossed 200 mark; more than one hundred fatalities were recorded in last fortnight alone. The Valley reported first covid-19 death on March 26 and since then not only have fatalities increased, the number of cases surged manifold. Experts have blamed complacency on part of the people after the government decided to unlock the economy.

True opening up of the tanking economy which threw thousands of people either out of their jobs or severely impacted their livelihood was necessary but the government was required to ensure that people take all the precautions while going about their business. Due protocols need to be put in place for every business and masks were to be made mandatory.

Experts had warned about the spike in cases in consonance with the surge in cases across India. The poor adherence to infection control practices by people remained largely responsible for the rise in numbers, experts said.

The complacency was also driven by people’s belief that the virus was feeble and the advisories were inane amid the fact that most young covid-19 patients got well and returned home.

COVID19, as per health department advisories, can prove lethal to people aged over 60, pregnant women, those with hypertension, diabetes and other comorbid conditions. The surge in the cases has resulted in the return to lockdown in several places including Srinagar and comes days after 239 scientists from 32 countries wrote a letter to World Health Organization that there is evidence that novel coronavirus in smaller particles in the air can infect people. They have called for the WHO to revise recommendations. According to existing evidence, the coronavirus disease chiefly spreads from person to person through small droplets from the nose or mouth which are expelled when a person with COVID-19 coughs, sneezes, or speaks. But if the virus remains airborne, it should be a cause of serious concern. This makes the pandemic deadlier than any other in the past. Now that lockdown has been resorted to again, the administration must start an aggressive campaign backed by strict enforcement urging people to exercise all the necessary precautions to ensure the virus doesn’t spread. There is also a need to be prepared and augment the healthcare infrastructure of emergent nature.

Online Education: Private schools keep students busy, Govt institutions clueless

Afaq Bhat
Srinagar, July 15: More than eleven months have passed when the educational institutions in Kashmir were closed.
The schools and colleges were closed in the Valley on August 5, 2019, when Centre announced its decision to abrogate J&K’s special status and divided it into two union territories. Since then educational institutions opened for only a few days in March this year but were closed again after the outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic.
An observer while talking to Precious Kashmir said, “When restrictions were imposed on August 5, 2019 no educational activities could take place as the internet had been snapped. But after the lockdown was put in place in March this year, the educational institutions started holding online classes. At present the entire education system has shifted to online mode.”
The observer said that the private schools have taken a lead in providing online education but the government run institutions are lagging far behind. “The students of government schools have been the worst sufferers as there is no infrastructure in these institutions to provide the online education,” he added.
An analyst said that the students of government schools don’t have smart phones and other gadgets through which they can get access to the online classes. “Even the teachers in government schools don’t have hi-tech gadgets.”
He said that government had announced that the students from weaker sections of the society will be provided with the electronic gadgets free of cost and the teachers who don’t have smart devices will be equipped but it seems that the announcement remained confined to papers only. “The private schools have succeeded in keeping the academic session alive but the government schools have not been able to do much,” the analyst added.
An owner of private school said, “We have made every possible attempt to keep students busy by sending them online assignments and holding their classes through zoom and googlemeet applications. Our teachers are working hard to ensure that students don’t suffer. Online education has helped but actual classroom education is must for the students.”
He said, “Private schools are facing a financial crunch due to many parents refusing to pay the fees but we are ensuring that no student suffers. We can sort out the fee issue later at present our priority is to keep the students busy and occupied.”
Another analyst said, “Private schools are doing a good job but same cannot be said about the government schools. No one has any idea about the activities being held by the government run institutions. Off late no statements have come  from the helmsmen.”
