Opening Markets On Eid Eve

Since March, novel coronavirus disrupted all spheres of normal life across the globe, Jammu and Kashmir included. The case count of Covid-19 continued upsurge and from 1000 cases as on May 15, the tally has now gone well past 18000. Out of these cases, 7667 are active positive, around 10000 have recovered and around 320 have died, mostly in Kashmir. Among all districts, Srinagar tops the list with over 4000 cases and almost 100 deaths. More increase in the number of covid-19 cases is proportional to the stress on the existing healthcare infrastructure. Going forward the situation doesn’t give any confidence. If the present trend continues, the cases are going to be far too many in the near future to be handled by the doctors. More so, when the healthcare professionals are also now indicating that the community transmission might have already set in.

Last week, the government returned to the lockdown, notwithstanding the inconvenience to many people which adds to already difficult economic situation. While there is a need to understand by every single individual that a vicious cycle of imposition and withdrawal of lockdowns cannot be allowed to become the norm and as such efforts should be made by one and all to bend the curve. The reality for the present remains that the cases are increasing and at least 500 are added every day and it being so when testing it not as aggressive as it ought to be. In this backdrop, the markets are opening from July 28 in ‘phased manner’ to allow people to shop for the ensuing Eid-ul-Azha. The divisional commissioner has asked deputy commissioners to ensure markets open with different timings to avoid gatherings and violation of social distancing protocol by the public thronging market places during these three days.

The government needs to run an aggressive awareness campaign and work towards the involvement of the community by charging village, locality elders, mosque managements etc to ensure people follow the safety precautions.

The people are required to take the threat of the covid-19 very seriously. They shall wear masks, maintain social distancing and adopt handwashing etiquettes all the time until covid-19 is defeated which is not far away given vaccines would be available soon.

Political parties in Kashmir want to bury the hatchet, move ahead?

Afaq Bhat

Srinagar, July 27: Former chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir and National Conference vice-president Omar Abdullah has broken his silence about his future course of action. He has made it explicitly clear that he won’t contest the assembly elections till J&K’s statehood is restored.
An analyst while talking to Precious Kashmir said that during the past few days, political parties have upped the ante to seek restoration of J&K’s statehood. “It appears that most of the political parties have acknowledged the change in J&K’s status-quo. None of the leaders want to talk about Centre’s August 5, 2019 decision and it seems that everyone wants to move ahead,” he added.
It’s in place to mention here that senior Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad during his recent meeting with the Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi sought the restoration of J&K’s statehood before the assembly elections are held. After Azad, Omar Abdullah has toed the same line.
The analyst said, “Regional parties in Kashmir seem to have realized that flogging a dead horse won’t serve any purpose and if these parties have to remain relevant then they will have to soften their stand and accept the ground reality.”
He said, “Apparently it seems that New Delhi has made up its mind to restore J&K’s statehood as the statements being given by the BJP leaders indicate that party has agreed in principle to fulfill the demand of the regional parties.”
On Sunday, NC president Dr Farooq Abdullah had stated that restoration of J&K’s statehood is the priority and he has got full faith in Supreme Court as far as the J&K’s special status is concerned.
An observer said, “The rat race to take credit for restoration of J&K’s statehood has commenced and it appears that announcement in this regard is likely to be made soon.”
He said, “It looks like that restoration of 4G internet and statehood will be announced soon. The flurry of statements indicates that something has already been agreed upon.”
He said, “New Delhi seems to be keen on reviving the political process in Kashmir and it appears that leaders have decided to take a step forward to address the concerns of the Kashmiri leaders but on their own terms and conditions.”
“Political scenario in Kashmir has changed drastically post August 5, 2019 and the parties will have to change their strategies to remain visible on the scene. Omar Abdullah’s decision to stay away from electoral process till J&K’s statehood is restored is no surprise. It was expected from him,” the observer added.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will launch coronavirus testing facilities in Noida, Mumbai and Kolkata via video conferencing today.

According to the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), these facilities will ramp up testing capacity in the country and help in strengthening early detection and treatment, thus assisting in controlling the spread of the pandemic.

India better off because of right decisions: PM Modi on COVID-19

New Delhi, July 27: India is in a “better position than other countries” regrading the coronavirus outbreak, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said today as the country recorded close to 50,000 new cases for the second straight day. Speaking at a virtual programme to mark the opening of the “high throughput” COVID-19 testing facilities in Noida, Mumbai and Kolkata, PM Modi said the death rate in India from coronavirus is far lower than that of the other large nations. “The recovery rate is better than most countries and already getting better,” he added.

“The world is praising us because of the efforts of the foot soldiers. We don’t lack awareness,” the Prime Minister said.

The country, he said, has taken big strides to set up infrastructure and now needs to “strengthen demand-supply chains in the block, village and zilla levels”.

“We want to save each and every Indian,” the Prime Minister said, adding that the country now has more than 11,000 COVID facilities and more than 11 lakh isolation beds.

“What India did with PPE, masks, test kits, it is a massive success story. At one point, India didn’t manufacture a single PPE kit. Now it is the world’s second largest manufacturer. Over 1,200 manufacturers are making PPE kits within six months. Ove three lakh N-95 masks are being made in India today. Three lakh ventilators can now be produced every year,” he said.

The new “high throughput” testing centres are located at the National Institutes of the Indian Council of Medical Research at Kolkata, Noida and Mumbai.

The Prime Minister said these hi-tech state-of-the-art testing facilities will boost the testing capacity by almost 10,000 a day in each of the three cities, which are among the hotspots of the disease.

Mumbai already has the maximum number of coronavirus cases in the country. The numbers in Kolkata are rapidly rising too. Noida is the big testing centre in western Uttar Pradesh.

An increase in the number of tests in these areas will lead to early detection and help control the spread of the virus.

The Prime Minister, however, added that these labs will not be limited to testing for coronavirus. In future, they will also be used for tests for Hepatitis B and C, HIV, Dengue and several other diseases.
