Taking countermeasures, says China

Beijing, Aug 31: India and China accused each other Monday of military provocation on their Himalayan border where a deadly showdown erupted in June — even as commanders from the two sides held talks aimed at easing tensions.

China’s military claimed Indian troops had crossed the border Monday near Pangong Tso, a lake at 4,200 metres (13,500 feet), and engaged in “open provocation and caused the border situation to become tense”.

“The Chinese military is taking necessary countermeasures,” the People’s Liberation Army’s regional command said in a statement.

Earlier Monday India said Chinese troops had “carried out provocative military movements to change the status quo” in the eastern Ladakh region over the weekend.

Military commanders from the two sides held talks Monday in a new bid to ease tensions between the nuclear-armed neighbours, who fought a border war in 1962 and have staged regular high altitude clashes since.

China did not confirm Saturday’s incident, but the foreign ministry said its troops have “always strictly respected” the unofficial border known as the Line of Actual Control.

On June 15, troops from the two sides fought hand-to-hand combat in Ladakh in which 20 Indian troops were killed. China acknowledged casualties but did not give figures.

The two sides blame each other for recent clashes and the two armies have since poured tens of thousands of troops into the region. Military and diplomatic talks are at an apparent stalemate.

Massive troop buildup –

Pangong Tso is one of several hotspots where troops have massed since June.

“Indian troops pre-empted this PLA activity on the southern bank of Pangong Tso lake, undertook measures to strengthen our positions and thwart Chinese intentions to unilaterally change facts on ground,” said the Indian defence ministry.

Senior officers met at a border post near the scene of the standoff on Monday, it added.

According to military sources, speaking on condition of anonymity, Indian troops pushed back Chinese troops who crossed the Line of Control.

“PLA soldiers walked into our area near the south bank of Pangong, but our soldiers were prepared and quickly pushed them back without any violence,” said one source.

“They tried to come in again several hours later but we stood firm. There has been no such confrontation in this area in the past.”

China’s foreign ministry said Chinese troops “have always strictly respected the Line of Actual Control and never crossed the line”.

“Border troops from both sides have maintained communication over issues on the ground,” foreign ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian told a press briefing.

Amid calls for boycotts of Chinese goods, India has stepped up economic pressure on China since the June battle and repeatedly warned that relations would suffer unless its troops pull back.

India has banned at least 49 Chinese owned-apps — including the TikTok video platform — frozen Chinese firms out of contracts and held up Chinese goods at customs posts.

China has complained about the action and warned that Indian consumers will suffer. (NDTV)

Sgr-Leh highway closed, opened after few hours

Srinagar, Aug 31: The authorities on Monday said that Srinagar-Leh highway was closed for civilian movement due to landslides for a few hours after which traffic was resorted.
A senior police official told KNO that the road was closed for the civilian traffic due to landslides.

Witnesses said that a huge Army convoy movement was witnessed on the Srinagar-Leh highway after fresh skirmishes at eastern Ladakh between Indian and Chinese troops.

Senior superintendent of police (SSP), Ganderbal, Muhammad Khalil Poswal, said that the highway was closed only for the clearance work as landslides have occurred due to the downpour. “Once the weather improves civilian vehicles will be allowed to move,” he said, adding that there was no need to panic and the situation was well under control.

Furthermore, passengers who were on the way to Leh from Srinagar said that only civilian vehicles were stopped at Gagangeer-Manigam check-post in Sonamarg and other points while Army vehicles were smoothly plying on the highway.

Earlier in the morning, the Indian Army in its statement issued stated that Chinese troops violated the previous consensus arrived at during military and diplomatic engagements during the ongoing standoff in Eastern Ladakh and carried out provocative military movements to change the status quo.

“Indian troops pre-empted the PLA activity on the Southern Bank of Pangong Tso Lake, undertook measures to strengthen our positions and thwart Chinese intentions to unilaterally change facts on ground,” the Ministry of Defence said in a statement.

‘First COVID-19 vaccines may not be most effective’

New Delhi, Aug 31:  Initial COVID-19 vaccines might not be the most effective, experts have warned. However, experts have claimed there would be slow but steady winners of the race against the highly contagious disease.
Director of the Center for Vaccines and Immunology at the University of Georgia Ted Ross has claimed that “the first vaccines may not be the most effective”. Ross himself has been working on an experimental Coronavirus vaccine, according to a New York Times report.

Several experimental vaccines are working on delivering protein in the human body that covers the surface of the coronavirus which is known as Spike. This propels the immune system to produce antibodies to fight the virus. However, many researchers are worried about this strategy. David Veesler, a Virologist at the University of Washington, “it would be a shame to put all our eggs in the same basket,” the New York Times report says.

Immunogenicity of the vaccine is the pivotal factor in deciding its efficacy. Antibodies are reliable for immune punch. There are blood cells known as ‘T-Cells’ which attack other cells that have been infiltrated by Coronavirus. However, Luciana Leite, a vaccine researcher at Instituto Butantan in Sao Paulo, Brazil has said “we still don’t know which kind of immune system will be important for protection,” the New York Times report says.

Experts have apprehensions that vaccines, which only rely on the antibody, may fail in the long run. That’s why the second line of defense in the form of T-Cells is crucial. Apart from this, a vaccine’s effectiveness will also depend upon the way it has entered into the human body. A nasal spray vaccine might be more effective than injecting into muscle one, as per the report.

So far, eight vaccine candidates are leading the race. University of Oxford-AstraZeneca’s ChAdOx1 nCoV-19 vaccine (AZD1222), Moderna-NIAID’s mRNA-1273, Pfizer-BioNTech’s BNT162b2, Russia’s Sputnik-V, Beijing Institute of Biological Products-Sinopharm, Wuhan Institute of Biological Products-Sinopharm, Sinovac, and Cansino have been undergoing the phase 3 human trials.
