DAK sounds new COVID-19 strain alert in Kashmir

Precious Kashmir News
Srinagar, Dec 30: With India reporting 20 cases of new Covid-19 strain so far, Doctors Association Kashmir (DAK) on Wednesday sounded alert and has urged health authorities in Kashmir to prepare for the potential spread of the variant in the valley.

“New Covid-19 strain is knocking on our door and we need to be prepared and alert,” said DAK president and influenza expert Dr Nisar ul Hassan said in a statement here this afternoon.

“The new variant is on the move and it can sneak in anytime,” he said adding we have to prepare in advance to deal with the virus. Advance planning and preparedness is critical to help mitigate the impact of any eventuality.

“We need to intensify surveillance activities and gear up hospitals to prevent an outbreak,” Dr Nisar said and added that the best way to prevent the virus is to stop it from coming in as once the virus enters the community it is difficult to control it.

He said twenty people who returned to India from the UK recently have tested positive for the new mutated strain. The variant – called VUI-202012/01 carries multiple mutations in the spike protein that the virus uses to enter human body cells, he said.

The mutant that was first reported in UK has moved to a number of other countries prompting more than 50 countries including India to impose travel ban on the UK. “The new strain is more infectious than the original virus. It is reported to be 70 percent more contagious than the existing strain,” Dr Nisar said.

“The new variant has wreaked havoc in UK and is responsible for the surge of new Covid-19 cases in the country”, he said adding at the moment, it seems the symptoms of the new strain are the same as the earlier one.

“Apart from cough and fever, other symptoms that are reported in persons affected by the new virus include fatigue, muscle pain, headache, loss of appetite, diarrhea and mental confusion.” “The new variant spreads through the same old ways. It spreads between people through respiratory droplets when an infected person coughs, sneezes or speaks,” said Dr Nisar.

“This means that wearing a mask, following hand hygiene and maintaining physical distance remain the principal ways to avoid getting infection from the new variant,” he said.

‘US nurse tests positive after receiving Pfizer vaccine’

California, Dec 30: A 45-year-old nurse in California tested positive for COVID-19 more than a week after receiving Pfizer Inc’s coronavirus vaccine, an ABC News affiliate reported.
Matthew W, a nurse at two different local hospitals, said in a Facebook post on December 18 that he had received the Pfizer vaccine, telling the ABC News affiliate that his arm was sore for a day but that he had suffered no other side-effects.
Six days later on Christmas Eve, he became sick after working a shift in the COVID-19 unit, the report added. He got the chills and later came down with muscle aches and fatigue.
He went to a drive-up hospital testing site and tested positive for COVID-19 the day after Christmas, the report said.
Christian Ramers, an infectious disease specialist with Family Health Centers of San Diego, told the ABC News affiliate that this scenario was not unexpected. “We know from the vaccine clinical trials that it’s going to take about 10 to 14 days for you to start to develop protection from the vaccine,” Ramers said.
“That first dose we think gives you somewhere around 50%, and you need that second dose to get up to 95%,” Ramers added. (Agencies)

Swiss nursing home resident dies after getting COVID-19 vaccine

Precious Kashmir Desk
Srinagar, Dec 30: A nursing home resident in Switzerland who was among the first in the country to be vaccinated against COVID-19 later died — but officials did not indicate whether the death was related to the jab, according to reports.
“We are aware of the case,” an official in the canton of Lucerne told Reuters, adding that the matter has been referred to Swiss drugs regulator Swissmedic.
Lucerne was the site of the first shot by Pfizer and its German partner BioNTech being administered in Switzerland primarily to the elderly.
A doctor at the nursing home had not been contacted by the vaccination team, according to local news outlet zeitpunkt.ch.
The resident, who received the coronavirus vaccine on Christmas Eve, had previously reacted negatively to the flu shot, according to the report.
The person, who had dementia, complained of urethral and abdominal pain on Saturday, the Swiss outlet reported. Later, the resident’s blood pressure dropped and their pulse spiked.
On Monday, the facility did not report the patient’s worsening condition, zeitpunkt.ch reported.
The following day, the doctor was informed but the patient died soon after, according to the outlet.

Switzerland has so far received 107,000 vaccine doses, and expects to get 250,000 per month starting next year, according to Reuters.
The country has documented five cases of a coronavirus variant from the UK and two cases of a South African variant, a Swiss health ministry official said, adding that he anticipates more cases of these faster-spreading mutations will emerge.
In Israel, a 75-year-old man also died after receiving a COVID-19 vaccination — but his death was said to be from a heart attack believed to be unrelated to the jab.
The unidentified man got the Pfizer shot at 8:30 a.m. Monday, and within hours had lost consciousness and died at home in Beit She’an, the Jerusalem Post said.

SEC seeks more time to analyse data on Covishield, Covaxin

New Delhi, Dec 30: On a day when the UK regulator gave an emergency authorisation to AstraZeneca’s covid-19 vaccine, an subject expert committee in India on Wednesday sought more time to analyse the additional data given by Serum Institute of India and Bharat Biotech International while seeking emergency licensure for their covid-19 vaccines, the health ministry said in a statement on Wednesday.
The SEC, an independent panel of experts set up by the Drug Controller General of India V.G. Somani to vet these proposals, will next meet in Friday, and may also take up the proposal by Pfizer, which had sough more time, the government said. Pfizer had sought an emergency licensure for import of the vaccine into India, as well as a waiver on clinical trials in India.
The first doses are being released Wednesday and vaccination will start Monday. AstraZeneca says it aims to supply millions of doses in the first quarter.
The vaccine should be capable of fighting the new variant of the coronavirus responsible for a surge of cases in the UK, according to AstraZeneca CEO Pascal Soriot
“The analysis of the additional data and information is going on. SEC will convene again on 1st January 2021 (Friday),” the health ministry said.
Usually, the DCGI clears a proposal for approval or emergency licensure only when it is recommended by the SEC.
The deferment of decision on the two companies’ porposals to Friday is especially significant for Serum Institute, whose proposal was taken after the UK Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) had given an emergency authorisation to AstraZeneca’s covid-19 vaccine for immunising people that are 18 years or older. The authorisation recommends two full doses administered with an interval of between four and 12 weeks, the Anglo-Swedish firm said.
Covishield is Serum Institute’s version of the vaccine originally co-developed by AstraZeneca and the University of Oxford.
Serum Institute had submitted its proposal for emergency licensure for the vaccine earlier this month, but an independent expert committee set up by the DCGI to vet the submissions had asked the company to return with updated data and after an approval was given by the UK MHRA to AstraZeneca for the original version. The original version was co-developed by AstraZeneca and the University of Oxford, with AstraZeneca having the commercial rights.
“This is a great and encouraging news. We will wait for the final approval from Indian regulators,” Serum Institute chief executive officer Adar Poonawalla said after the UK MHRA authorisation to AstraZeneca.
AstraZeneca had signed a pact with Serum Institute earlier this year, where the Indian firm would contract manufacture and supply 1 billion doses of the vaccine for low-and-middle-income countries, with a commitment to provide 400 million before the end of 2020.
AstraZeneca’s clinical trials for its vaccine in the UK and Brazil included two separate dosing regimens. A lower dosage gave a greater efficacy of 90% while two full doses a month apart gave a 62% efficacy.

CIK raids Parra’s Pulwama residence

Srinagar, Dec 30: The Counter Intelligence Kashmir (CIK), a wing of J&K police, raided different areas in south Kashmir, including the residence of youth president of the PDP Waheed-ur-Rehman Para in Pulwama on Wednesday in a militant funding case.

Official sources said that CIK sleuths raided the residence of Parra at Naira in Pulwama on Wednesday morning. “The sleuths also raided other areas in south Kashmir in connection with the alleged militant funding case,” they said.

Parra was arrested by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) about five days after he filed his nomination paper for the District Development Council (DDC) DDC seat from Pulwama. However, he won after his family members and other PDP leaders campaigned in his favour.

He has remained under the detention of NIA since November 25 for his alleged links with Hizbul Mujahideen (HM).

Parra, who was instrumental in the revival of the PDP in south Kashmir, especially in militancy-hit Pulwama, allegedly surfaced during the probe into the suspended Deputy Superintendent of Police Davinder Singh case. Singh was arrested while ferrying two Hizb militants out of Kashmir in a vehicle on the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway earlier this year.
