By: Jahangeer Ganaie

Srinagar, May 3: Experts on Monday said that the second wave of Covid-19 is behaving differently and children for whom vaccines haven’t been recommended are also at risk while parents must take proper care of them.

Head of Department (HOD) at GB Panth Hospital Srinagar Dr Muzzafar Jan said the second wave which basically is a mutation is affecting small children as well which was very rare in first wave.

Jan said that many of the Covid-19 positive children have no symptoms.

“Those that do get sick tend to experience mild symptoms such as low-grade fever, fatigue, and cough. Some children have had severe complications, but this has been less common. Children with underlying health conditions may be at increased risk for severe illness,” he said.

Jan said the main symptoms of Covid-19 in children are fever, cough, throat infection, vomiting, diaheora .

“If a child is sick we must check their saturation level and breathing rate,” he said.

“If breathing rate of the child will increase and oxygen level will remain above 94, we call it moderate symptoms of Covid and once child becomes latherogic, faces breathing problems and oxygen level goes below 90 it is severe category of Covid-19,” Jan said.

Jan said that in critical condition child can have acute respiratory distress syndrome and shock besides multiple organ failure.

“If parents notice any symptom in their children they must test them, isolate them and take care of them so that transmission can stop,” he said. “Vaccine for children are under trail and haven’t been recommended for children yet.”

Jan said that a positive mother can feed her baby but mother must take all precautions and after feeding must keep baby at a distance of 6 feet at least.

“Children above two years of age should use mask and follow all covid appropriate behavior. However, children below two years can’t use mask as it can create breathing problems for them,” he said.

“If child has high fever for four days, refuses feeding, feels latherogic, saturation level below 94 and has breathing problems, he must be hospitalised and tested for Covid -19 through RT-PCR,” Jan said.

Jan said children must be given healthy diet with zinc pills to avoid severe impact of from Covid-19.

Short-term lockdowns can help India lower Covid caseloads

New Delhi: As India continues to suffer from the uncontrollable second Covid wave that has now engulfed small cities, towns and even villages, health experts on Monday once again vouched for short-duration complete lockdowns to mitigate the situation and lower the caseloads.

The basic fact in the fight against spread of Covid is to stop human-to-human contact so that the deadly chain of transmission can be broken, thus providing a super-burdened healthcare system a fresh breeze of life and take care of existing patients gasping for oxygen.

“Usually, cases are reported less on Monday following the week-end lockdown. Lockdown definitely helps in flattening the curve as we saw during the lockdowns in 2020,” said Dr Neha Gupta, Infectious Diseases Specialist at Medanta-The Medicity, Gurgaon.

India reported 3,68,147 fresh cases and 3,417 fatalities in the last 24 hours, according to the data provided by the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

To break the chain of coronavirus transmission in the state, the Haryana government has announced a week-long lockdown, starting Monday. Delhi has already extended the lockdown for one more week.

With Bihar reeling under the second wave of Covid-19, leaders have asked Chief Minister Nitish Kumar to impose a 15-day complete lockdown across the state.

According to Dr Harshal R Salve, Associate Professor at Centre for Community Medicine, AIIMS New Delhi, clear messaging and risk communication are key to pandemic response.

“Banning all large gatherings, universal mask use and vaccination are only measures which hep to halt the pandemic,” Salve told IANS.

According to Gupta, most important is to remember that maintaining social distancing, following hand hygiene, wearing mask and vaccination are the most important tools for prevention.

“We need to follow these guidelines for a few years at least,” she stressed.

White House’s chief medical adviser Anthony Fauci last week suggested a complete lockdown for a few weeks to curb transmission of the Covid-19 in India.

According to Fauci, a temporary lockdown in India is the need of the hour as it could have a significant impact on the dynamics of the outbreak.

After Govt teacher, Naib Tehsildar sacked ‘without inquiry’ in Kashmir

Srinagar: A Naib Tehsildar was fired from his services in south Kashmir district of Pulwama without holding any inquiry ‘in the interest of the security of the state’.

This is the second such case where a government employee was sacked during the last couple of days under Article 311.

Earlier, a government teacher from north Kashmir district of Kupwara was sacked from his services without any inquiry, attracting huge criticism from civil society and political leaders.

“The Lieutenant Governor is satisfied under sub-clause (c) of the proviso to clause (2) of Article 311 of the Constitution of India that in the interest of the security of the State, it is not expedient to hold an enquiry in the case of Nazir Ahmad Wani, Naib Tehsildar, Pulwama-II,” an order of the General Administration Department (GAD) read.

The order further said that Lt Governor after considering the facts and circumstances of the case and on the basis of the information available that the activities of Nazir Ahmad Wani are such as to warrant his dismissal from service with immediate effect.

Reacting to these actions, former chief minister and PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti said in the middle of COVID-19 pandemic, centre should focus on saving lives instead of firing government employees on flimsy grounds in Kashmir.

“No wonder its misplaced priorities have converted India into shamshanghats & kabristans. The living continue to suffer & the dead are deprived of dignity,” Mehbooba tweeted.

Several politicians, including Apni Party (AP) president Syed Mohammad Altaf Bukhari and senior CPI(M) leader Mohammad Yousuf Tarigami, besides others have appealed to the Lt Governor to terminate these dismissal orders.

The J&K government on April 21 constituted a Special Task Force (STF) to identify and scrutinize the government employees, and lodge cases against those who pose a threat to the country’s security or are involved in ‘anti-national activities’.

The STF under the chairmanship of Additional Director-General of Police, Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has been scrutinizing the cases of employees suspected of being involved in activities requiring action under the proviso (C) of Article 311(2) of the Constitution. Under the proviso (C) of Article 311(2), the government is empowered to terminate an employee without recourse to the normal procedure if it is satisfied that his or her retention in public service is prejudicial to the security of the state.
