AB de Villiers’ retirement remains final: CSA

Johannesburg: Putting an end to all the speculations, Cricket South Africa (CSA) on Tuesday announced that swashbuckling AB de Villiers won’t be coming out of international retirement to join the squad ahead of the upcoming T20 World Cup in India.

As CSA announced the red and white-ball squads for their upcoming tour of West Indies and Ireland, they also confirmed that De Villiers has decided “once and for all” that his retirement would remain final after discussions with the board.

‘Discussions with AB de Villiers have concluded with the batsman deciding once and for all, that his retirement will remain final,” CSA said in a statement on Twitter.

In May 2018, de Villiers had announced his retirement from international cricket. He played 114 Tests, 228 ODIs and 78 T20Is before announcing the surprise decision.

However, on the sidelines of an IPL match last month, the versatile cricketer said it would be ‘fantastic’ to make an international comeback ahead of the T20 World Cup.

The 37-year-old was in a splendid form in the IPL 2021 playing for Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) before the tournament suspended due to several players and staff testing positive for Covid-19.

Meanwhile, the 19-member Test squad for the West Indies tour will see Dean Elgar lead the Proteas for the first time since his permanent appointment as Test captain in March 2021.

Off-spinner Prenelan Subrayen has received maiden call-up for the national Test side after an eye-catching domestic season in which he finished with 19 wickets in four matches.

Sisanda Magala and Lizaad Williams have retained their spots in the national side for both limited-overs matches against West Indies and Ireland.

Other uncapped selections include Kyle Verreynne, Keegan Petersen, Sarel Erwee and Marco Jansen.

“The historic tour to Ireland is crucial for points towards our qualification for the 2023 Cricket World Cup and preparation for the T20 World Cup later this year. This is the start of our road to these trophies and every tour will see us field our absolute best sides,” Cricket South Africa Convenor of Selectors, Victor Mpitsang said.

“The team has been in a rebuilding phase for a while now but we are satisfied that the return on investment is going to show itself sooner rather than later.

We have to trust the process that has been put in place and support our team while they find themselves and their way. These are truly exciting times in South African cricket, with an exciting new leadership group that is determined to return the team back to its winning ways,” he added.

Test squad for West Indies tour: Dean Elgar (c), Temba Bavuma (vc), Quinton de Kock, Sarel Erwee, Beuran Hendricks, George Linde, Keshav Maharaj, Lungi Ngidi, Aiden Markram, Wiaan Mulder, Anrich Nortje, Keegan Peterson , Kagiso Rabada, Rassie van der Dussen, Kyle Verreynne, Tabraiz Shamsi, Lizaad Williams , Prenelan Subrayen, Marco Jansen

all those families in the National Capital that has lost a member due to COVID-19, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal announced on Tuesday.

He also announced that families whose sole breadwinner died due to COVID-19 will get a monthly pension of Rs 2,500, besides the ex-gratia.

‘All those children who have lost both their parents to COVID; or if their single parent to COVID, and have been orphaned, every such child will be given Rs 2,500 per month till the age of 25 and those children will be provided with free education,’ Mr Kejriwal said while addressing a digital press conference here.

He said in Delhi, there are about 72 lakh people who have a ration card and every ration card holder will get 10 kgs of ration free of cost for this month.

Black Fungus: Care And Don’t Panic

Covid has been making deeper inroads into urban and rural areas of Jammu and Kashmir along with most parts of India. The pestilence has claimed many lives, around 900 people alone in Jammu and Kashmir in little over a fortnight. Around 70000 people have been infected during the time also.
The virus has been ravaging even as 70%-80% of those affected with it recover on their own without many side-effects. About 20%-30% of patients affected with symptomatic Covid-19 might require hospitalization. Among them, the condition of some can get worse and require treatment in an intensive care unit (ICU).  Worst case scenario has been for the people with comorbidities such those having uncontrolled diabetes, heart or respiratory diseases and malignancies. Older age and obese people do not fare good either.
Amid all this, there is new fear— contracting a severe disease–mucormycosis. Also known as ‘black fungus’, is not any new infection but the number of cases has increased due to Covid-19 in India, according to the Director AIIMS Randeep Guleria who also warned against the spread of the “rare but dangerous fungal infection.”
As per experts, at higher risk of contracting the disease are those having poor immunity, uncontrolled diabetes. Other risk factors include steroid treatment and among other people prone to it are those having malignancies, HIV/AIDS and those who have been treated with medicines such as deferoxamine for iron overload conditions.
This disease as per the experts can affect the face, infecting nose, orbit of eye, or brain, which can even cause blindness.
Other forms of the fungus include the pulmonary form in which the lungs are mainly involved and less commonly disseminated mucormycosis, where it spreads throughout the body.
Government of India, in an advisory issued on May 9, said the black fungus may turn fatal if uncared for. It also said the infection mainly affects people who are on medication that reduces their ability to fight environmental pathogens.
With Covid-19 cases increasing, it’s paramount that protocols of infection control practices are followed at hospitals. Scrupulous hygiene and care of the equipment inside the ICU should be done in order to reduce the risk of fungal and other infections.
It is also very important for those with diabetes to keep their sugar levels under very good control.  If steroids have to be used, their judicious use is recommended and for as short a period of time as possible, strictly at the advice of the doctors.

‘Cooperate with medicos, don’t blame them for COVID-19 miseries’

By: Afaq Bhat
Srinagar: Doctors and paramedical staff across Kashmir have been working overtime to handle the second wave of the COVID-19 in the Valley and people should cooperate with medicos rather than blame them for their miseries.
Some videos have gone viral on social media where the attendants can be seen accusing doctors of not treating their patients without the COVID test.
An analyst while talking to Precious Kashmir said, “People should understand that doctors and paramedics are also human beings and they are frontline Covid warriors, they are not superhuman, nor are they virus proof. If we start losing them who will treat a common man?”
He said, “At present the situation is grim in every district. The administration should make the Rapid Action Test (RAT) kits available in all the hospitals and health centers. This would make things easy for doctors treating the patients.”
A medico said, “Since the COVID-19 pandemic has hit Jammu and Kashmir we have been working 24×7 to provide treatment to the patients who are in distress. It’s unfortunate that some attendants get into an argument and scuffle with the medicos.”
He said that these are tough times and we have to cooperate with each other to fight this virus. “This is not the time to blame each other for our miseries. Entire world is battling COVID-19 and J&K is not the only place that has been hit by the pestilence,” the medico added.
An official said, “Most of the big hospitals in Kashmir are accommodating the COVID-19 patients. High and low flow oxygen beds have been set up in the tertiary care hospitals and all possible efforts are being put to save the precious human lives.”
He said that the Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha is monitoring the situation personally and is taking feedback continuously. “The lockdown is helping in breaking the transmission chain. People have to cooperate with the administration and doctors. These are testing times and we have to come out of it. We have to be firm and resilient,” the official added.
An expert said, “We should understand that COVID is an emergency. As on date except for vaccines there is no protection for COVID-19 and doctors are aware of it that’s why they are asking the patients to get a Covid test done before consultation.”
He said, “We have to fight COVID-19. Fighting with each other won’t serve any purpose. Doctors are our assets and we have to preserve them.”
