Rising fatalities due to COVID-19

From May 1 to May 18, 963 lives were lost to coronavirus in Jammu and Kashmir. On May 17, Jammu and Kashmir recorded the highest ever death toll of 73 fatalities in a single day. In the last one week alone, 446 persons were claimed as victims by the pestilence in J&K.

In the last 24 hours as on Monday last, the daily count of covid-related deaths in India touched a new high, with 4,329 deaths being reported from across the country. That overtook the count of 4,205 deaths recorded a week earlier on May 11.

Since the start of this month, 66,866 people are reported to have died because of Covid-19, making it the deadliest month during the pandemic. Last month was the worst month for India in terms of number of infections. Close to 70 lakh infections had been detected during that month. But its impact on mortality is being felt only now. In April, close to 49,000 fatalities had been recorded in India.

As per experts, the death curve usually has a two-week lag and it is expected that the death count would also begin to come down in a few days’ time in India. In the period, however, it is possible that this count goes up further, because lots of states are reporting deaths that happened a few days to a couple of weeks earlier.

Divisional Commissioner Kashmir, Pandurang K. Pole also stated that there are chances that mortality rate may remain the same or increase in the next few days. The rising trend of deaths due to covid-19 is concerning and to arrest it requires immediate corrective measures.

As has been underlined by the Financial Commissioner in context with GMC Jammu, the senior faculty members of the concerned departments of all institutions should increase their presence by making frequent rounds of wards, where the COVID positive patients are admitted, so that such patients are properly looked after and treated, which will help in reducing the mortality.

Unfortunately in India, as is the case with many developing countries, death recording, as well as analysis of the cause of deaths, is poor. That comes in the way of ascertaining accurately the mortality impact of the disease.

However, of late, the country’s health system has come up with evidence-based guidelines that assisted in bringing in a semblance of uniformity in-patient care. The J & K government needs to follow them and also enhance testing modalities and guidance on isolation and quarantine. All other measures, already known, should be taken to reduce the fatalities.

Can’t leave people in lurch: LG Sinha’s message to all

Visits COVID-19 hospital in Jammu, asks senior doctors to take frontline

Srinagar: Lieutenant Governor, Manoj Sinha, is leading from the front in the fight against the COVID-19 in Jammu and Kashmir.

He recently visited Government Medical College (GMC) Jammu to take stock of the situation. “LG’s visit surprised everyone as not many people expected the head of the union territory to visit the hospital that houses the COVID-19 patients,” said an observer.

He said, “LG’s visit to the COVID hospital is a message to one and all that people can’t be left to fend on their own. They have to be provided with all the facilities so that they can fight the pandemic. LG’s message is clear, he has asked senior doctors to take frontline.”

An official while talking to Precious Kashmir said, “The Lieutenant Governor is personally monitoring the situation and is taking the feedback on hourly basis from all the quarters. The administration is providing all the facilities to the hospitals and is ensuring that no institution runs out of supply. The capacity of the hospitals is being increased and makeshift facilities are being put in place to ensure that people don’t suffer.”

An analyst said, “We are caught in a very difficult situation and we have to fight it out. The government is trying its best to control the spread of the virus. The lockdown has helped to stop the virus transmission. Restricting the movement of people has helped in stopping the virus from spreading rapidly.”

He said, “People should understand that the lockdown is for their benefit. At present there is no other way to stop the virus from spreading. The vaccination and lockdown are the only ways to save ourselves from getting caught in a difficult situation. Precaution is better than cure.”

Director SKIMS Dr A G Ahangar recently stated that the people have to choose between the ventilator and vaccine.

Dr Ahangar had emphasised the need for the Mass Vaccination Campaign, he had stated that the only ultimate weapon against the Corona Pandemic are vaccines. “We have to choose between vaccine or ventilator, vaccine or death, vaccine or famine,” the Director SKIMS had told this newspaper.

He had hoped that people at large would understand the gravity of the situation and the crisis that would otherwise unfold.

The Health and Medical Education Department on Tuesday said that J&K has received fresh consignment of Covishield vaccine. The immunization drive in J&K will continue on war footing basis from tomorrow (Wednesday) May 19. “The government has also assured a continuous supply of vaccine doses to meet the requirements,” the Health department added.

A medico said, “People should not shy away from taking the vaccines and need to get a COVID-19 jab as soon as possible. The vaccine is the only protective shield available at present to save us from the virus.”

Aggressive testing, correct info weapons to fight COVID-19: PM

Calls district officials as field commanders in battle against pestilence

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday while interacting with the district officials including District Magistrates on the COVID-19 situation in India said they were playing a very important role in the battle against Coronavirus.

“In a way, they were “field commanders” of the battle against the deadly virus,” he said.

“There are different challenges in every district of our country. You understand the challenges of your district best. When your district wins, it is the country’s victory. If your district defeats COVID-19, so does the country,” PM Modi further said.

Noting that only “local containment zones, aggressive testing and correct and complete information” were India’s tool against coronavirus, he said the country would continue to work towards “testing, tracking, treatment and Covid appropriate behaviour” and that in the second Covid-19 wave, a lot of attention was needed to be paid to rural and inaccessible areas.

The Prime Minister said that all the officials have a very important role in this war against Corona like a field commander of this war. He remarked that local containment zones, aggressive testing and correct and complete information to the people are the weapons against the virus.

‘You understand the challenges of your district much better. So when your district wins, the country wins. When your district beats Corona, the country defeats Corona’, he said, adding that the officials were working without taking any leave in spite of contracting COVID-19.

He also informed that work is being done rapidly to install oxygen plants in hospitals in every district of the country through the PM-CARES Fund and these plants have already started functioning in many hospitals.

While commending the way villagers were maintaining social distance in their farm in the first wave, Modi said that villages grasp the information and modify it according to their needs which is actually the strength of villages. He also advocated to adopt best practices against coronavirus.

I along with the team are overwhelmed by the blessings that the Prime Minister has showered on us,” she said and added that the appreciation from the PM has encouraged the team and boosted their morale to do more for the people during the current crisis situation.

“I shared our work done with the Prime Minister who reciprocated with appreciation for the whole team of the hospital,” she said.

In her four-minute interaction with the Prime Minister, Dr Tazyeen briefed him about the work being carried out at the hospital about pregnant women, besides informing him about other support from the UT administration, central government due to which the hospital was being made operational in August 2020 for COVID-19 related activities.

She also thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor, Manoj Sinha for their support and providing all the medical and other facilities to the hospital within no time.

Dr Tazyeen has also a message for expecting mothers while urging them that if any pregnant woman tests positive for coronavirus, she should not panic instead approach a doctor.

“These expecting mothers should immediately isolate themselves, have a healthy and proper diet, mask-up themselves and take routine exercises besides taking folic acids, vitamin D, and calcium and they can also go for teleconsultation in case of emergency as we are available 24/7,” she added.

New RT-PCR kit to detect various mutant strains

New Delhi: An Institute of National Importance under the Ministry of Science and Technology has developed a new RT-PCR kit with novel gene which targets facilitating detection of Covid-19 across various mutant strains.

In a statement, the Ministry of Science and Technology said, “A newly developed multiplex RT-PCR kit has a higher accuracy of detecting Covid 19 across the various mutant strains of the virus responsible for the global pandemic. As the pandemic is going through a second wave with multiple variants, the selection of target genes in multiplex RT-PCR assay is becoming critical for accurate detection of the virus.”

Even though coronaviruses make far fewer errors than other RNA viruses, the mutations in S, R, and N genes often interfere with RT-PCR assay.

“The new multiplex RT-PCR kit developed by Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology (SCTIMST), an Institute of National Importance under the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India targets two SARS-CoV-2 genes: RdRp and ORFb-nsp14, and the human RNAse P gene as the internal control to help detect a range of mutant strains,” the Ministry said.

Various studies have shown that RdRp and ORF1b-nsp14 genes are more sensitive in detecting Covid-19. In order to target the multiple variants in the second wave, using two highly accurate confirmatory genes like RdRp and ORF-nsp14, can give precise results. The ORFb-nsp14 is one of the least mutated genes in Covid-19 and currently there are no kits in the market with ORF-nsp14 as the target.

“The new kit is based on multiplex Taqman chemistry, amplifying all three genes in a single reaction. The amplification time for the assay is 45 minutes, apart from the time required for the RNA isolation from nasopharyngeal swab samples. Multiplexing two confirmatory genes will help shortlist possible new variants if one of the genes fails to amplify and can be marked for sequence analysis,” the Ministry said.

The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has validated this kit at the National Institute of Virology (NIV) Pune, and found that it has 97.3 per cent sensitivity and 100 per cent specificity in Covid 19 detection.

The SCTIMST has signed a non-exclusive license MoU with Huwel Lifesciences, Hyderabad, on May 14 to commercialize the kit.

“This unique RT-PCR kit will be a significant weapon in our fight against COVID-19 by a facile detection of SARS-CoV-2 mutations which are becoming increasingly important,” said Prof Ashutosh Sharma, Secretary, DST.

Fresh consignment of Covishield vaccine received: Govt

Srinagar: After days of clamor regarding dearth of vaccines across hospitals – particularly in Kashmir division – Jammu and Kashmir Government has received a fresh consignment of Covishield vaccine here on Tuesday.

Taking to micro-blogging site Twitter, Health and Medical Education Department J&K announced that “J&K has today received fresh consignment of Covishield vaccine. The immunisation drive in Jammu and Kashmir division to continue on a war footing from tomorrow, 19th May.”

“The government has also ensured for a continuous supply of vaccine doses to meet requirements”, it said.

It is pertinent to mention here that frequent complaints suggested that a majority of hospitals across Kashmir division were facing an acute shortage of vaccines, creating a state of pandemonium in the health care sector.
