J&K Admin gears up to tackle possible 3rd wave

By: Jahangeer Ganaie

Srinagar: To deal with the possible third wave of Covid-19, the Jammu and Kashmir government has pulled up the socks by designating two pediatric wards as Covid wards for children.

Official sources said that as the third wave of Covid-19 in the next six months is likely to affect children, the administration has started to gear up so that it won’t have to face a crisis.

It is pertinent to mention here that as per experts, third wave is likely to affect children more as there are no vaccines recommended for children as of now.

Dr Dara Singh, Medical Superintendent at Shri Maharaja Gulab Singh (SMGS) hospital Shalmaar, Jammu said that as per the literature available, third wave of Covid-19 may come and can affect children and in order to deal with the situation, “we have started preparedness in advance.”

He said that they have prepared a DPR and submitted requisition before concerned higher ups to get high flow oxygen supply to all 400 beds at the hospital.

Dr Singh said that as of now two wards have been designated as Covid wards for children in which there are over 100 beds and among them 20 will be ICU beds.

He said that as of now the hospital has one small 500 lpm oxygen plant and work on another oxygen plant with capacity of 3000 LPM is going on war footing basis and in next two weeks it will complete.

Dr Singh said that “our motive is to use the time for full preparation till the possible third wave will come so that there won’t be any problem at that time.” He requested people to follow Covid appropriate behavior in letter and spirit. (KNO)

Ventilation can decrease risk of transmission: Advisory

Srinagar: As it has already been advised by medical experts to wear masks, keep distance and maintain sanitation in order to prevent the spread of Covid19, the Office of Principal Scientific Advisor to the Government of India Thursday stressed the importance of ventilation in its recent advisory to curb the Covid19’s effect.

An official communiqué said that the office of the Principal Scientific Adviser to the Government of India has issued a simple easy to follow guideline to “Stop the Transmission, Crush the Pandemic – Masks, distance, sanitation and ventilation to prevent the spread of SARS-CoV-2 virus” as the pandemic rages in India, we need to once again remember that simple tools and practices can reduce the spread of SARS-CoV-2 virus.

It stated that the advisory highlights the important role well-ventilated spaces play in diluting the viral load of infected air in poorly ventilated houses, offices etc. Ventilation can decrease the risk of transmission from one infected person to the other.

“Just as smells can be diluted from the air through opening windows and doors and using exhaust systems, ventilating spaces with improved directional air flow decreases the accumulated viral land in the air, reducing the risk of transmission,” reads the statement.

It further said that ventilation is a community defense that protects all of us at home or at work. Introducing outdoor air in offices, homes and larger public spaces is advised. Measures to improve ventilation in these spaces must be taken up on urgent priority in urban and rural areas alike, recommendations for hutments, homes, offices and large centralised buildings are given. Simple strategic placement of fans, open windows and doors, even slightly open windows can introduce outdoor air and improve the air quality inside. Introduction of cross ventilation and exhaust fans will be beneficial in curtailing the spread of the disease.

In buildings with central air-management systems improving central air filtration /increased filtration efficiency is especially helpful when enhanced outdoor air delivery options are limited. In offices, auditoriums, shopping malls etc. use of gable fan systems and roof ventilators are recommended. Frequent cleaning and replacement of filters is highly recommended, it added.

“Saliva and nasal discharge in the form of droplets and aerosols, by an infected person while exhaling, talking, speaking, singing, laughing, coughing or sneezing etc. is the primary mode of virus transmissions,” read the statement, adding, “an infected person who shows no symptoms also transmit the virus. People without symptoms can spread the virus. People should continue wearing a mask, wear double masks or a N95 mask.”

The SARS-CoV-2 virus infects a human host where it can multiply, in the absence of the host it cannot survive, and stopping the transmission of the virus from a person to another person will decrease the infection rate of the disease to a level where it can eventually die. This can be achieved only with the support and cooperation of individuals, communities, local bodies and authorities. Use of masks, ventilation, distancing, and sanitation, the battle against the virus can be won, it added.

As the lockdown continues due to the raging virus, he urged the government to continue to provide free ration for people living Below Poverty Line (BPL) for at least 2 months. “It is also necessary to ensure a safe corridor for the movement of goods which would save the goods from getting expired and also generate revenue for the Government by way of taxes.”

In this second mutant wave of the pandemic as oxygen has emerged as the priced commodity, he suggested hassle-free oxygen and medical supplies in the hospitals and other places of need. As the essential commodities workers are exposed to contagion, he urged the government to prioritize their vaccination. Further, in order to ensure that the contagion is contained and prevent its spread, he requested the government to ensure proper fumigation of public places and contaminating zones.
