J&K among top 10 states, UTs in terms of food security, nutrition

Srinagar: Directorate of Economics and Statistics Tuesday celebrated Statistics Day in Jammu and Kashmir as part of all India programme to commemorate the contribution of Late Professor Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis towards Indian Statistical System.

Regional Director, Evaluation and Statistics, Jammu and Kashmir, Principal, Statistical Training School, Jammu and Srinagar, Chief Planning Officers and District Statistics and Evaluation Officers participated virtually in the event.

The theme for this year’s Statistics Day is Sustainable Development Goal (SDG)-2 (End hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture) which highlights the interdependence between food security, nutrition, land use transformation, productivity and sustainable agriculture. The aim of this goal is to ensure that everyone has access to adequate and good-quality food to lead a healthy life.

Pertinently, Jammu & Kashmir is among top 10 states and UTs in terms of food security and nutrition and efforts are being made to further improve outreach of the programmes initiated by the government in this regard.

During the programme, presentations on theme of the Day were given by the known personalities in the field of Statistics from the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations, Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation and National Statistical Institute.

Later, the winners of Professor P.C. Mahalanobis National Award in Official Statistics, 2021, Prof. P.C. Mahalanobis National Award for Young Statistician, 2021 and Spot Essay writing Competition, 2021were felicitated.

Pertinently, the “Statistics Day” is being celebrated every year with an aim to inspire statisticians, especially young researchers and planners, working in various fields of economic planning to accept new emerging challenges in the collection of quality data and develop new approaches for its holistic appreciation aimed at helping the planners to frame policies for development activities.

CS inaugurates ‘SUKOON’, a mental health helpline initiative

Says government keen to help youth in need

Srinagar: Chief Secretary, Arun Kumar Mehta, Tuesday inaugurated SDRF first Battalion’s 24×7 mental health helpline ‘SUKOON’ at its headquarters.

Divisional Commissioner, Kashmir, P K Pole; Commandant General HG/ CD SDRF, V K Singh; Deputy Commissioner, Srinagar, Aijaz Asad, Commandant SDRF First Battalion Kashmir, Haseeb Ur Rehman besides other dignitaries were present on the occasion.

Pertinently, ‘SUKOON’ is a mental health helpline initiative (toll free number 1800-1807159) to offer guidance to persons (or their well-wishers) who are experiencing anxiety, depression, stress, panic attack, PTSD, adjustment disorder, suicidal thoughts, substance abuse, mental health emergency and pandemic induced psychological stress.

This initiative, launched by SDRF First Battalion Kashmir in collaboration with Mission Youth J&K and Tourism department, will guide the caller to avail services of clinical psycholgists, therapists, counsellors and psychiatrists and provide round the clock one to one support, free and confidential services to those experiencing mental health issues.

Chief Secretary, while appreciating the much needed service in present times, said that this initiative would go a long way in supporting vulnerable sections of the society. He urged upon youth to avail helpline Sukoon’s assistance without any hesitation and live a stress free, balanced and contended life. He expressed dismay over drug menace which is engulfing the society towards self destruction and said that it should be our prime concern to help such victims get rid of this hazard. “Establishment of such a unique helpline by the police department is really a step forward towards this direction and will immensely help in eradicating this social evil from the society”, he maintained.

Chief  Secretary laid stress on sustainability of such initiatives saying that all concerned from SDRF should take up it as a mission so that the helpline becomes a permanent facilitator for the posterity.

Chief Secretary emphasized the need for collaborative efforts of SDRF, Mission Youth and other departments towards understanding the issues and concerns of youth and resolve them so that they start a better life.

DGP cum Commandant General HG/CD & SDRF explained that his team has launched two significant initiatives to help people in distress during the pandemic. First, 200 SDRF and 40 NDRF personnel were trained for Covid care duties and then deployed at Seven hospitals in J&K while launch of Sukoon helpline is the second step to support persons facing health issues.

SMC Mayor, his PSO injured in stone pelting in Sgr

Srinagar:  Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) Mayor Junaid Azim Mattu and his Personal Security Officer (PSO) were on Tuesday injured in a stone pelting incident in the summer capital.

However, Mattu said that he sustained a minor injury and was perfectly safe and fine.

Official sources said that the vehicle of Mattu came under stone pelting at Chaudhry Bagh, Rainawari in downtown Srinagar on Tuesday evening. “Mattu received minor injury while his SPO sustained a head wound,” they said.

Confirming the incident, the SMC Mayor said that he sustained a minor injury and his PSO sustained a head injury. “Am perfectly safe and fine. An incident of stone pelting at Chaudhry Bagh, Rainawari while going from one meeting venue to another. The SPO is out of danger and has received medical care,” he said.

LG launches ‘HAUSLA- Inspiring her growth’ for catalysing women entrepreneurship in J&K

Srinagar: In a historic effort aimed at harnessing the energy, enthusiasm, and exuberant dreams of the Women of Jammu & Kashmir, Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha Tuesday launched the “HAUSLA- inspiring her growth”, a comprehensive programme for Catalysing Women Entrepreneurship in the UT, here at SKICC Srinagar.

Terming the event as the beginning of a new era in women entrepreneurship, the Lt Governor said that women of Jammu and Kashmir are capable of achieving great heights in every field and history is replete with great women leaders from J&K.

“There is no field- political, social or economic in which the women of Jammu and Kashmir haven’t earned accolades and prestige. The social status of women in the society of Jammu and Kashmir was much better than other parts of the country even several centuries ago”, added the Lt Governor.

The intent of the innovative initiative is to empower Women as vital drivers of the overall development process in the UT by identifying & empowering Women Entrepreneurs as role models, providing them with markets, networks, training & continuous support and subsequently building an ecosystem to inspire other local women entrepreneurs.

Speaking on the significance of “Hausla”, the Lt Governor said that program has been made in a very scientific way and the broad contours include targeting Women entrepreneurs of J&K already established in the field of self-employment, Creating a channel for educated women to explore their potential and subsequently channelize their business acumen, helping them overcome challenges related to finances, legal, societal biases by focusing on their innate potential. In addition, there shall be dissemination of knowledge about promotion policies of Governments for women entrepreneurs and providing access to enterprise education and training with focus on business development, besides linkages to women enterprise networks, associations, business premises and online marketplaces.

The Lt Governor said that the priority of the government is to reduce the gap between women and men entrepreneurs, in a systematic manner and to encourage women who are currently engaged in various professions, so that they too can become a part of ‘Hausla’ program.

“With the launch of “HAUSLA” a strong foundation has been set for the economic and social independence for our daughters and sisters. I am sure that a new eco-system of women entrepreneurs will be created in J&K”, he added.

“The vision of Industrialization and IT Transformation we are working on will enable women of J&K to run and develop their enterprises so that they become an  integral part of the overall development of J&K”, maintained the Lt Governor.

The Lt Governor underscored that the government is continuously working on the “Three Pillars of Action” viz. Making women financially independent, Ensuring their maximum participation in leadership role, and Paying special attention to their health and socio-economic security.

“I believe that through skill and blended training under Hausla program the participation of Women can be increased in IT, Telemedicine, e-learning Business, Fashion Designing, Painting, Publishing, Handicrafts, Food Processing, and e-Commerce”, he added.

He noted that with the right training, financial assistance and self-confidence, we can take revolutionary steps towards empowering women.

It was informed that under the leadership of JKTPO and in collaboration with Industry stakeholders and India SME Forum, a not-for-profit organization for Small & Medium Enterprises, the first batch of ‘HAUSLA’ 5-months program with 100 women entrepreneurs on board will start from July this year, giving wings to women entrepreneurs to fly higher, make their own identity in business and promote their products.

Mentioning the significant role of women from the region like Bimla Koul, the first woman who took admission in SP college in Sringar in 1931 and others including Mrs. Kanta Wazir, Dr. Girija, and Dr. Mahmuda Shah who displayed great strength and played important role in keeping the people together, the Lt Governor said that on 5th August 2019, Prime Minister Narendra Modi gave back all their rights and respect to women and that golden era is coming back again.

Recalling the convocation ceremony of Islamic University of Science and Technology, the Lt Governor said that of the 158 gold medalists, 105 were girls and in every department, be it engineering, science, food technology, computer applications, they performed exceptionally well.

Referring to the “Time Use Survey Report” of the Central Government, the Lt Governor said that in our country, despite the household chores, women, our Nari Shakti, are also the strong base of the economy.

Emphasizing the need to bring women at par with men in ownership of business establishments, the Lt Governor said that there are some statistics which need to be changed. According to 6th Economic Survey, out of all the industrial establishments in the country, only 13.41% of the ownership is with women. Even in handicrafts and handloom establishments, in which women play the most important role, the percentage of ownership of women was 21.89%, compared to 77.74% for men.

The Lt Governor said that the objective of ‘Hausla Team’ in collaboration with Jammu and Kashmir Administration and our Industry and India SME Forum under the leadership of JKTPO is to reduce the gap of women ownership in business establishments.

The Lt Governor highlighted the inspiring story of Asma, Srinagar-based IT entrepreneur, who caters to local as well as global clients. He also informed about Ms Zarka Tanzeel of Budgam, who is the first woman entrepreneur from Kashmir division to launch Sheen brand detergent powder and became a role model for other girls.

For encouraging women for innovations in different fields from handicrafts to IT and making their products available in market, the Lt Governor directed the ‘Mission Youth’ and ‘Hausla Team’ and J&K Rural Livelihood Mission (RLM) to jointly start a program called “Champion for Innovation” as training module. Through this, obstacles being faced by our girls in innovation, in becoming entrepreneurs in technology, can also be studied and overcome.

The Lt Governor stressed on four basic mantras viz. Robust policy, Right channel, Active participation and Effective implementation for achieving greater results in all our plans.

“Today when the aspirations of the people have increased, especially when women want to move ahead in every field, then it is our responsibility to provide them with the right platform”, observed the Lt Governor.

The Lt Governor congratulated Ranjan Thakur, Principal Secretary Industries; Ankita Kar, Managing Director, J&K Trade Promotion Organisation, and Bharatendu Verma of IIM Ahmedabad who with his entire team have worked on the ‘Hausla’ scheme for women entrepreneurs and aspiring women of J&K.

The Lt Governor also congratulated Shahid Choudhary, CEO, Mission Youth and said that the Tejaswini scheme which was announced in March and suffered slight delay due to Corona is also formally launched today.

On the occasion dedicated to women, the Lt Governor also saluted all those women who have done amazing work in the health sector with their great strength, service, and hard work. “Doctors, Nurses, ASHA, Anganwadi, ANM workers have selflessly served the people of J&K for more than a year. From saving lives in clinical management to providing protection through vaccination, their contribution will be written in history”, he added.

On the occasion, Neetu Bali and Atiqa Wani, women entrepreneurs from Jammu and Kulgam respectively shared their journey into entrepreneurship.

The Lt Governor also interacted with the women entrepreneurs present on the occasion and wished them success for their future endeavours.

Baseer Khan, Advisor to Lieutenant Governor, while addressing the gathering termed the event as another milestone in J&K and maintained that it will usher in a new dawn of empowerment and socio-economic upliftment of women from J&K. He said that the ‘Hausla’ programme would not only skyrocket the local economy of the UT but will also generate employment avenues for the local population.

Dr. Arun Kumar Mehta, Chief Secretary, speaking on the occasion said that JK economy is changing rapidly and in next 5 years it will be doubled. He observed that the completion of projects like Jammu-Srinagar National Highway and the Railway line will give fillip to the economy of J&K. He said that women are as much partners in economic activities as their counterparts and there are no limits for women entrepreneurships.

Ranjan Prakash Thakur, Principal Secretary Industries and Commerce, also spoke on the occasion and hoped that the programmes like ‘Hausla’ will further empower the women of the UT as the region has huge potential with strong willed women folk.

While speaking on the occasion, Vinod Kumar, President India SME Forum, highlighted the achievements and role of the forum with respect in providing a vibrant ecosystem for women entrepreneurs of the country and added that around 7000 women entrepreneurs are being supported by the forum.

‘White Water Rafting’ activities resume at Wussan

Tourism Deptt tapping potential of virgin destinations: Dr. Itoo

GANDERBAL: The cold waters of Sindh today reverberated with activity with the resumption of White Water Rafting from Wussan to Wayil in Ganderbal district after nearly two years.

The Rafting activities were kick started by the Directorate of Tourism, Kashmir jointly with Adventure Tour Operators with strict adherence to all Covid-19 related SOPs and protocols.

Director Tourism, Kashmir, Dr. G N Itoo, senior officers of Tourism Department, representatives of Adventure and water sports groups’, white water rafters and many tourists were present on the occasion.

Speaking on the occasion, the Director Tourism said White Water Rafting is an important component of Adventure Tourism in J&K and the Department is seriously exploring the possibilities of more adventure tourism avenues across Kashmir so that more youth get employability opportunities besides the tourists visiting J&K get options of adventure activities than routine visits to places of attraction.

Highlighting that Kashmir valley has ample scope for adventure tourism activities, Dr. Itoo said that the Department has started exploring virgin tourist destinations across Kashmir valley so that tourists get diversified options while visiting here and recently in that direction several unexplored trekking routes were also opened for the enthusiastic trekking goers.

The Director Tourism said the Department has carried vaccination campaign to inoculate tourism stakeholders against COVID-19 pandemic. He said as a result of this vigorous campaign around 85% tourism stakeholders got vaccinated. The goal, he said, is to achieve cent per cent vaccination of tourism stakeholders so that once the COVID-19 situation further improves, tourists get the confidence of coming to Kashmir in bigger numbers.

On the occasion, large number of white water rafters participated in and enjoyed the event.

Advisor Baseer Khan chairs 105th BoDs meeting of JK-KVIB

SRINAGAR: Advisor to Lieutenant Governor, Baseer Ahmad Khan today chaired the 105th Board of Directors meeting of Jammu and Kashmir Khadi and Village Industries Board (JK-KVIB) at Sanat Ghar Bemina.

Vice Chairperson, JKKVIB, Dr Hina Bhat; Principal Secretary Industries and Commerce Ranjan Prakash Thakur, Secretary in Rural Development Department Ms. Rifat Arif, Director Handicrafts and Handloom Kashmir, Registrar Cooperatives, Director Industries & Commerce Jammu, Director Industries & Commerce Kashmir, Director MSME and Secretary KVIB participated in the meeting.

The Advisor directed the Board to extend hand holding to the educated unemployed youth of the UT, so that they can avail benefits from various schemes being implemented under the purview of Khadi and Village Industries sector.

The Advisor said that the Board has a tremendous potential to create employment opportunities for the educated unemployed youth of Jammu and Kashmir, besides   contributing to the local economy. He directed the officers to put strenuous efforts in order to make things happen and show positive results on ground.

Advisor said that the Board has been designated as the Nodal Agency in J&K for implementation of employment generation programs, especially the Prime Minister’s Employment Generation Programme (PMEGP). He said that it should ensure   successful implementation of these initiatives by providing every help to the aspiring entrepreneurs.

Advisor directed the officers to work in close coordination with other government agencies to realise the benefits through convergence by imparting skill and entrepreneurship development training to the youth of Jammu and Kashmir.

The BoD also decided to prepare a proposal for the approval of government to extend the benefits of Employment Generation Programme to urban youth through JK Urban Employment Generation Programme and adoption of cluster approach for revival of traditional industries.

Advisor also directed them to popularise the various schemes of JKKVIB through comprehensive plan for awareness generation through Information Education and Communication (IEC) activities taking into account the COVID protocols.

Regarding the various administrative issues projected by the officers, the Advisor directed them that all the decisions should be in sync with the government rules.

Regarding the Entrepreneurship Development Programmes (EDP), it was given out that EDP training has been imparted to 474 SC/ST candidates under NSSH scheme under various trades through Rural Self Employment Institutes and Entrepreneurship Development Institute. Out of these 250 have established their units by availing loan under PMEGP/JKREGP.

Also EDP trainings have been imparted to the 159 aspirant entrepreneurs through SKUAST K under various activities.  It was also given out that Skill Development Trainings to 122 candidates under various activities like commercial floriculture cultivation, vermi-compost manufacturing, bee keeping, high density orchards, and poultry farming have been conducted in various districts of J&K in collaboration with SKUAST-Kashmir as per NSSH scheme guidelines. Besides skill development trainings have been imparted to 166 candidates under various activities through ITIs.

Speaking on the occasion, Advisor said that the facility shall  usher a new revolution in the door to door  delivery of fuel to the Industrial and Institutional customers and  will also  help  in reducing  the  movement of customers  for diesel procurement at petrol pumps.

He further added that the Government is committed to investing in Clean Energy Futures and attainment of sustainable development goals besides reducing the adverse impact on the environment.

He also added that the aim of Government is to lower the carbon footprints and reduce emissions of undesirable gases into the environment.

Lauding the pioneering concept of ‘On Demand Delivery’ of diesel at  door step, he added that the initiative is backed by cutting edge state of the Art Technology having all features like Geo Fencing, Automation, Mobile application for ordering Diesel , Live tracking facility etc .

He said the facility aims to cater the bulk diesel buyers like housing societies, hotels, hospitals, malls, construction sites, industries, banquets at their doorstep.

Officials of the BPCL informed that facility is fully compliant to Explosive and Legal Metrology statutory requirements and ensures the Company Promise of delivering Diesel with 100% Quality and Quantity.  He added that   individuals, companies, organisations can order Diesel from home through Mobile App and accordingly Diesel would be delivered at their door step. He added that customers can make online payments using Debit Card, Credit Card, UPI, PayTM , or Cash on Delivery facility can also be availed.

According to senior Company Officials, the facility is only for supply of Diesel for Stationary Engines like Diesel Generator sets in factories, Heavy Vehicles which can not come to the Petrol Station for Fuelling which would have checks on theft, spillage, quality issues or loss of business due to delays in diesel procurement through conventional means. Customers shall also have the option of getting periodic MIS for their accounting purposes from Bharat Petroleum.

Officials said that BPCL Plans to proliferate the concept at many more locations with an aim to bring convenience to general public and customers in the near future.

CDS Bipin Rawat reviews operational preparedness in forward areas along LAC

New Delhi: The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General Bipin Rawat on Tuesday reviewed the operational preparedness in forward areas along the Line of Actual Control in the Central Sector in Himachal Pradesh along with GOC, Uttar Bharat Area.

On arrival at the forward most post in Sumdoh Sub-Sector, the CDS was briefed on the operational preparedness of forces towards safeguarding the territorial integrity of the nation while he interacted extensively with the Army, ITBP and General Reserve Engineering Force (GREF) personnel deployed in the remote areas and appreciated their state of high morale.

He encouraged all ranks to keep up the high state of alertness and professionalism displayed by them.

Later in the day, General Rawat visited the Headquarters of Western Command of Indian Army at Chandimandir where he reviewed the operational situation along the Western borders.

The CDS commended the formation for their efforts to ensure force preservation and at the same time stepping forward to provide support in terms of establishing COVID hospitals at Chandigarh, Patiala, Faridabad, providing paramedical staff in aid of civil hospitals, assistance in vaccination of common citizens and revitalizing oxygen plants at various places in the nation’s fight against the pandemic.

He stressed upon the need to focus on training hard and remain vigilant to thwart the nefarious designs of our adversaries, emphasizing that all ranks must keep themselves abreast with latest trends in information technology, emerging cyber threats and counter measures.

Awaam ki Awaaz’:  Basholi resident Isha thanks LG Sinha for giving platform to her for highlighting local issues

SRINAGAR: A concerned citizen of Basholi, Kathua, Isha Kawatra has thanked the Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir, Manoj Sinha for  giving platform to her through ‘Awaam ki Awaaz’ for highlighting the difficulties faced by students of remote areas of Basohli region during online classes.

Recently, Lieutenant Governor, Manoj Sinha dedicated monthly Radio talk show to corona warriors who are at the forefront in the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic across the Union Territory.

During the programme, LG Sinha also shared some of the inspiring stories of good Samaritans and saluted their spirit and dedication towards human service.

“I am very excited about it and I am thankful to LG Manoj Sinha ji who gave me platform to highlight my views. I am sure that the issues raised would be effectively resolved”, an elated Isha said.

Isha further advised the public to use the platform of Awaam ki Awaaz to highlight their issues and grievances directly with the Lieutenant Governor of J&K. “I urge the public to present their problems directly to the Lieutenant Governor through this programme and I am also thankful to Lieutenant Governor for launching this programme for the welfare of public”, Isha said.

Commissioner Secretary reviews works of Sindh Forest Division

GANDERBAL: Commissioner Secretary, Forests, Sanjeev Verma, today visited Sindh Forest Division Ganderbal to review the departmental activities being carried out in the district.

Chief Conservator of Forests, Kashmir, T. Rabi Kumar, Deputy Commissioner, Ganderbal, Krittika Jyotsna, Conservator Srinagar Circle, Zubair Ahmed, DFO Sindh, DD FPF besides other officers and officials were present on the occasion.

Commissioner Secretary inspected the Malhar Plant nursery and took stock of raising of different plant species there. He was informed that the nursery has a plant potential of around 4.55 lakh with variety of species like Deodar, Kail, Fir, Ulmus, cupress, Betula and Maple.

He appreciated the department for starting raising of high-altitude species of Bhojpatra (Betula).

At present the nursery has stocks of 1.15 lakh of Bhojpatra and its associate species available.

Later, Commissioner Secretary convened a review meeting at Malhar and took detailed assessment of the forestry works being carried out within the district. He appreciated the “one beat guard One village Programme” launched by the department for involving local villages in afforestation programme through use of Seed balls. He was informed that 35 such villages have been identified for the programme in the district.

He asked the DC to work out a module for integration of forestry works with MGNREGA under convergence for facilitating involvement of local gram panchayats.

Regarding degraded forest land in the division and acknowledging the efforts of the department in rehabilitation and reforestation of such areas, he advised for working out a detailed vision plan incorporating provisions for different segments of forests like vegetation, grasslands and scrublands so that rehabilitation programs are planned as per the requirements of each sector.

While reviewing scope of institutional plantations in the district, it was informed that Ganderbal district has planted 43000 saplings under “J&K Green drive” in the year 2020-21 in collaboration with different line departments under the institutional plantation program.

Commissioner Secretary, while appreciating the drive, advised for enthusiastic involvement of educational institutions, paramilitary forces and other line departments in these drives to generate awareness among the people regarding the role and importance of forest resources.

He directed DFO Sind to ensure plantation of different varieties of plants in the DC office complex so that people visiting the complex are able to appreciate the forest bio-diversity of the district.

Meanwhile, Commissioner Secretary planted a Maple sapling in the premises of the Nursery.
