Padma Bhushan awardee Mian Bashir Ahmed passes away

Srinagar: Padma Bhushan awardee and veteran Gujjar leader Mian Bashir Ahmed passed away at 98, at his native village Wangat Kangan in Ganderbal district.

He was the son of a top Gujjar leader and saint Mian Nizam Din Larvi and father of former Minister Mian Altaf Ahmad.

As per family sources, he breathed his last at about 10:00PM.

His Nimaz-e-Jinazah will be performed tomorrow at Mizar Sharief Baba ji Sahib Larvi, located at Baba Nagari Wangat, Kangan.

Mian Bashir Ahmed Laaravi was born November 1923. He was a Minister in Shiekh Abdullah’s cabinet. Later, he left politics and started working for Islamic Sufi tradition and to help down trodden people.

In 2008, he was honored with ‘Padma Bhushan” award, third highest award of India for his extraordinary service for Gujjar, Bakarwal and other downtrodden groups.

J&K reports 135 new Covid-19 cases

Srinagar: Jammu and Kashmir reported 135 fresh covid-19 cases even as there was no death due to the virus in the last 24 hours, officials said on Staurday.

They said 37 of the cases were reported from Jammu Division and 98 from Kashmir Valley, taking the infection tally to 323325 in J&K.

Providing the district-wise details, they said, Srinagar reported 35 cases, Baramulla 5, Budgam 6, Pulwama 9, Kupwara 10, Anantnag 8, Bandipora 11, Ganderbal 9, Kulgam 4, Shopian 1, Jammu 10, Udhampur 3, Rajouri 4, Doda 10, Kathua 0, Samba 1, Kishtwar 7, Poonch 2, Ramban 0 and Reasi 0.

A number of these cases were confirmed at diagnostic laboratory of CD hospital here.

The CD cases include female (60) from Pulwama, male (45) from Khansahib, female (32) from Kanikadal, female (24) from Bemina, two males (42, 11) from Baghat Srg, male (15) from Budshah Nagar Srg, two females (19, 55) from Batmaloo, male (61) from Safakadal Srg, male (60) from Rawalpora Srg, female (32) from Qamarwari Srg, female (50) from Khanyar, female (50) from Fatehkadal, female (33) from Hasnabad, male (65) from Shalimar, male (35) from Nawa Kadal, male (47) from Lal Bazar, female (35) from Habakadal, male (30) from Hawal, female (50) from Looswani Newa, male (69) from Monghama, female (33) from Wuyan, female (32) from Lelraw, female (52) from Habakadal, male (17) from Baghi Mehtab, female (40) from NA, male (48) and female (NA) from Shalimar.

Meanwhile, there was no death due to the virus. So far 4395 people have fallen victim to the pathogen in J&K—2156 in Jammu division and 2239 in Kashmir.

Moreover, they said, 156 more COVID-19 patients have recovered, 64 from Jammu Division and 92 from Kashmir Valley.

So far, 317627 people have recovered, leaving the number of active cases at 1303—545 in Jammu and 758 in Kashmir.

There was one fresh confirmed case of mucormycosis (black fungus) reported today. Thus far 42 black fungus cases have been confirmed in J&K, the officials added. (GNS)

Train services to remain Suspended today

Srinagar: Authorities have decided to suspend train services from Banihal-Baramulla and vice-versa on August 15.

Official sources said police and concerned have been informed about the decision by the railway authorities. (GNS)

Indo-Pak armies exchange sweets along LoC

Srinagar: India and Pakistan armies on Saturday exchanged sweets along the Line of Control in Kupwara and Baramulla district besides Poonch on latter’s Independence Day.

“Indian Army as a warm gesture, presented sweets to Pakistan Army at Chilehana Tithwal Crossing Point to extend best wishes to Pakistan on their Independence Day, displaying the will to maintain peace along the Line of Control,” an army officer said.

“Over years, India has continuously endeavoured to sweeten and strengthen the bilateral relations with Pakistan through goodwill gestures like this one across the spectrum to ensure peace and tranquility in the region.”

Post the ceasefire agreement in February this year, he said, there has been a prolonged peace along the Line of Control. “The people have appreciated the efforts of the Indian Army to maintain peace in the villages along Line of Control. This gesture is one of the many such efforts made towards achieving peace and development in J&K, he said, adding, “These positive endeavours by the Indian Army will further the cause towards prolonged peace along the Line of Control.”

Also, the Indian Army and Pakistan counterparts exchanged sweets at Kaman post in Uri Baramulla, official sources said.

Indian Army on the occasion of Pakistan’s I-Day exchanged sweets and compliments with Pakistan Army troops in Poonch and Mendhar Crossing Points along LoC in Poonch, Lt Col Devender Anand, Defense Ministry’s Jammu based PRO said. (GNS)

Div Com visits Imam Bara Zadibal, Mir Shams-ud- Din Araqi’s (RA) shrine

Srinagar: Divisional Commissioner (Div Com) Kashmir, Pandurang K Pole Saturday visited Imam Bara Zadibal and Shrine of Mir Shams-ud-Din Araqi (R.A) to take stock of arrangements being put in place for smooth conduct of mourning processions and religious gatherings during the ongoing month of Muharram-ul- Haram.

The Div Com was accompanied by Deputy Commissioner Srinagar, Mohammad Ajaz Asad, Commissioner SMC, Athar Amin Khan, Director Tourism, Dr. G N Itoo and senior officers from PWD, PHE, PDD, Health and other concerned departments. General Secretary All J&K Shia Association, Abid Hussain Ansari was also present on the occasion.

During visit, the Div Com also took stock of the progress on various ongoing developmental works being executed by departments including Tourism, PWD and JKPCC.

He directed concerned to expedite the pace of work and ensure all works are completed in a time bound manner.

The Div Com emphasised on putting all arrangements at both sites to ensure smooth conduct of religious gatherings and mourning processions during the holy month of Muharram-ul- Haram.

He instructed concerned to ensure uninterrupted water and electricity supplies in the area. Besides instruction were given for arranging additional gen-set facility for power back up.

The Div Com stressed on repairing of roads and installation of street lights at all required spots on war footing to ensure smooth passage of mourners during the night hours.

SMC Commissioner was instructed to ensure proper maintenance of sanitation and cleanliness and regular lifting of garbage and its disposal in the area and other Shia dominated areas of Srinagar.

Health authorities were directed to ensure a team of doctors along with an ambulance is deployed to facilitate better medical supplies besides arrangements for sanitizers and face masks is made available to the devotees during the processions.

The Div Com urged people to follow Covid Appropriate Behaviour during gatherings as is the need of the hour to contain the spread of Coronavirus.

During his visit, the  Div Com also met a local delegation led by General Secretary All J&K Shia Association, Abid Hussain Ansari, appraising him about the progress of ongoing works and regarding the issue and demands of locals and Imam Bara and Shrine bodies.

The demands included extension of Imam bara premises, rehabilitation of affected families and development of parks.

The Div Com assured the delegation that all  its genuine demands shall be looked into and addressed on priority.

2 IAS among 9 officers get LG’s award for honesty, meritorious public services

Srinagar: On the eve of I-Day, Jammu and Kashmir government on Saturday announced Governor’s award for honesty, integrity and meritorious public service for the year, 2021 in favour of nine officers including two IAS and three JKAS officers.

An order issued by Additional Secretary to the Government, Rohit Sharma, reads that sanction is hereby accorded to the grant of Lieutenant Governor’s Award for Honesty, Integrity & Meritorious Public Service for the year, 2021, in favour of nine officers including two IAS, three JKAS officers.

The awardees include Dheeraj Gupta, Principal Secretary to the Government, Housing & Urban Development Department, Manoj Kumar Dwivedi, Commissioner/Secretary to the Government, General Administration Department, Zubair Ahmad, Commissioner/Secretary to the Government, Department of Food, Civil Supplies & Consumer Affairs, Rahul Sharma, Excise Commissioner, J&K, Babila Rakwal, Chief Executive Officer, Jammu & Kashmir Energy Development Agency, Er. Gurmeet Singh, Managing Director, JPDCL, Er. Aafaq Showkat, Superintending Engineer, Jal Shakti, Dr. Rajeshwar Sharma, Medical Superintendent, Chest Disease Hospital, Jammu and Dr. Tajamul Hussain Khan, Chief Medical Officer, Budgam.

The order issued under number 733-JK (GAD) of 2021, dated 14-08-2021, further reads that each awardee shall be felicitated with a gold medal, cash prize of 51,000, Citation and a Certificate.

Helicopter Crash: 10 days on, searches continues to trace missing pilots

Jammu: Searches continue to locate the two pilots, who went missing after the helicopter crash in Ranjit Sagar Dam in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kathua district on August 3.

An official statement said: “Military authorities are leaving no stone unturned to search for the helicopter which crashed and sank into the Ranjit Sagar Dam on August 3 along with two pilots.

“Army has intensified with Submarine Rescue Unit of Indian Navy being flown in to explore digitally located wreckage at depth of approximately 80 – 100 meters,” the statement said, adding that “Indian Air Force has lifted the heavy equipment from Vishakhapatnam to Pathankot for speeding up the underwater search.”

It read that the Indian Army and all other agencies including Indian Navy, Indian Air Force, NDRF, Ranjit Sagar Dam Authority, District Authorities and the locals are sparing no efforts for bringing the operations to a final conclusion.

“Indian Army is coordinating the efforts of Indian Navy deep divers team consisting of Officers, JCOs and Other Ranks, multi beam sonars, side scanners, remotely operated vehicles and underwater manipulators which have been flown in from Chandigarh, Delhi, Mumbai and Kochi and pressed into action at the crash site of the dam,” the statement added.

The official statement further stated that the search operation continues unabated in spite of bad weather and rain. Expertise and equipment of Army, Navy, IAF, NDRF, SDRF, NGOs, State Police, Dam Authority and private firms from all over the country have also been put into action.

“This deep underwater operation is challenging due to the near zero visibility below 50 meters owing to the colloidal nature of water in this season which adversely impacts accuracy of sonars and other sensors,” it read, adding that “

“Experts, specialised equipment and divers are being continuously flown in and international assistance is also being sought.”

The defence statement further said that, “No efforts are being spared for early conclusion of the search operation. A small area of 60m by 60m has been localised and special sonar equipment flown in from Kochi is being employed to enable the search operations to enter their final phase” (KNO)

DGP greets people on I-Day

Srinagar: Director General of Police (DGP) Dilbag Singh Saturday greeted the people of J&K, families of slain, Police and other security forces personnel, their families on the eve of the Independence Day.

He said that “the Independence Day is not only an occasion to celebrate the freedom from the foreign rule but also a day to remember our martyrs who have given supreme sacrifice in the line of duty for the nation.”

The DGP in his message has impressed upon the officers and personnel to rededicate themselves for the integrity and sovereignty of the nation and continue their work against the militancy and crimes.

Decaying electric poles pose threat to Shopian residents

Pulwama: Dangling electric wires tied with trees, worn out wooden poles are posing grave threat to the lives of people as well as to their property in several villages of Shopian district.

The residents of Babapora, Darbagh, Safanagri, Zainapora, Durpora Awneera, Check, Chermarg, Reshiepora, Bandpawa, Thokerpora, Reban and its adjacent villages of Shopian district alleged that they are living under constant fear due to low lying electric wires tied with trees and decaying electric poles in their villages.

The residents said that the electric lines touch roofs of houses and trees on roads posing risk to life and property.

“Due to low lying overhead transmission lines, we are not able to work properly in the fields. We have been requesting the concerned department to replace the dangling and damaged electric wires and poles but our pleas fell on deaf ears,” Shahid Ahmad, a local resident said.

He said that in back to village programmes, locals had demanded electric poles and wires in the area, but on ground nothing has been done.

“All low tension wires in our village have been tied with trees in absence of poles due to which the wires are very low. Moreover, the wires are very weak and often get damaged, said Mohammad Yousuf, another local resident.

He said that they have taken up this issue with the administration several times but on ground nothing has been done.

Locals requested higher ups to look into the matter and install new electric wire and poles in the area. (KNO)

Over Rs 3 lakh fine recovered from COVID SOPs in Kashmir

Srinagar: An amount of over Rs three lakhs has been recovered from 2627 persons for violating COVID-19 Standard Operating Procedure (SOPs) and other guidelines in the Kashmir valley during the past 24 hours.

A police spokesman said Saturday afternoon that continuing its efforts to curb the outbreak of 2nd wave of Coronavirus, during the last 24 hours Police have realized fine to the tune of Rs3,04,350 from 2627 people throughout the Kashmir valley for violating the various guidelines, rules and SOPs regarding Covid-19.

The special drive against the violators of Covid-19 guidelines/rules continued throughout all the districts of Kashmir Valley to ensure that people adhere to SOPs and guidelines envisaged by the government to curb Covid-19 pandemic.

Community members are once again requested to cooperate with the Police in containing the spread of Coronavirus by following the SOPs, guidelines and protocols for their own safety and for the safety of others. The special drive shall continue throughout the districts of Kashmir Valley to strengthen the safety measures.
