Superhuman effort required from England: Gavaskar

New Delhi: England will require a “superhuman effort” to make a comeback in the ongoing five-match Test series against India, feels former Indian skipper Sunil Gavaskar.

The legendary cricketer expects the Virat Kohli-led Team India to hold sway over England after their emphatic 151-run win over the hosts in the second Test at the Lord’s. the first Test at Trent Bridge was declared a draw after the fifth day’s play was washed off by rain.

“India have dealt a psychological blow to England and it will take a superhuman effort from the home team to come back in the series. Yes, cricket is a game of uncertainties and things can turn around quite dramatically but for that to happen it will take a miracle,” Gavaskar wrote in his column for The Telegraph India.

Gavaskar further said England are relying heavily on skipper and premier batsman Joe Root in the five-match series. Topping the batting chart in the series, Root has amassed 386 runs in the first two games against India.

“At the start of the fifth day’s play, the general thinking was that England would win the game. But, on a last-day pitch even 180 would have been tough as seen by the team being dismissed for 120 and losing by a big margin. Their batting depends so much on Root that if he doesn’t hold the innings together, then the innings comes apart at the seams,” Gavaskar added.

Crowd Management

Covid-19 cases continue to be reported, even though the numbers are not alarming. However, complacency could be detrimental. The prime objective of the government should be to stop crowds from gathering at busy places. The reason is that the R Value – or reproductive value – of Covid-19 is more than one in several states or UTs including Jammu and Kashmir.

Random changes in the virus’s genetic code are threatening to undo the progress made in containing the pandemic’s spread.

There is enough evidence that the current crop of vaccines limit the number of people falling gravely ill.

Dedicated focus must be given on timely inoculation of 2nd dose, besides ensuring 100% coverage of the 18-44 age group with the first dose, the Lt Governor rightly asked the officials during a review meeting on August 18.

There is a need for assessing the surveillance activities being conducted in the districts. There is also a need to scale up the surveillance exercises besides contact tracing which must be done at a 1:15 ratio to break the spread chain of the virus.

Besides increasing vaccination, there is a need to guard against complacency and laxity, which creeps in as positivity declines. Efforts must be stepped up to prevent any probable future surge.

While the effective preventive and surveillance measures have shown favourable results in reducing the intensity of the second wave, there is a need to consolidate the substantial gains achieved in containing the spread and accord highest priority to the areas reporting new positive cases. The sustained decline in positivity rate must be maintained.

All districts continue to be in green zones as per the cardinal Indicators for assessing the COVID 19 situation. But complacency could prove detrimental. As has been underlined by the Lieutenant governor, better crowd management is imperative to break the spread chain. The concerned officials need to discharge their collective responsibility for enforcing Covid Appropriate Behaviour in workplaces and in public, especially in crowded places.

Efforts must be stepped up to prevent any probable future surge, especially predicted 3rd wave.

While devastation wreaked by the second wave should continue to spur the authorities to be better prepared on all counts – oxygen, ventilators, ICU beds and medicines, people must be cogent as lifting of restrictions should not lead to all-round laxity in adhering to the precautionary norms.

Proactive steps, mass vaccination drive keep COVID-19 at bay in J&K

Can’t sit back and relax as virus can raise its ugly head without warning, say experts

By: Afaq Bhat
Srinagar: Proactive steps taken by Jammu and Kashmir administration and mass vaccination drive have kept the COVID-19 third wave at bay in the Union Territory.
According to the officials people above the age of 45-years have already been vaccinated, and the process is on to provide COVID-19 jabs to all the adults.
Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha while chairing the weekly meeting with Covid Task Force, SSPs here on Friday reviewed the Covid response and containment measures of the districts administrations.
He emphasized on adopting multifold strategies to prevent the third wave, the Lt Governor passed specific directions for further enhancing the testing and tracing in the coming days. Maximum vaccination, continuously analyzing the situation, strict adherence to Covid protocols, and enforcement of containment measures should be the focused area of the administration at all levels to tackle the future health challenges, the Lt Governor said.
A medico while talking to Precious Kashmir said, “It’s evident that vaccinations have helped as the patient rush has declined and there has been no sudden spike in the cases. There were apprehensions that the Covid cases may rise after Eid-ul-Adha and ongoing marriage season but till date situation has remained under control.”
“The fears about vaccines being unsafe have been dispelled and more and more people are coming forward to take a Covid jab. The health workers have played an important role by reaching out to far flung areas to carry out the inoculation drive,” the medico added.
An official said, “Threat of a third Covid wave is still prevalent. We cannot sit back and relax. The administration is monitoring the situation closely. Reports emanating from places in South India are disturbing and we have to remain vigilant. The guard cannot be lowered. People need to follow the Covid Appropriate Behavior to keep the virus at bay.”
He said, “Many steps have been taken to ensure that the virus doesn’t raise its ugly head again but people have to cooperate and they have to understand that prevention is better than cure.”
According to the experts the virus can mutate and turn ugly without even a warning. “The pandemic has not ended. The Covid is still present everywhere and we are still very far from developing herd immunity. Next three months are crucial. If the positivity rate remains low we can assume that we have won the war against Covid and it has lost its sting. We have to remain patient for some more time,” said an expert.

Sustained decline in Covid positivity rate must be maintained: LG

Asks officers to enhance testing to prevent third wave

Srinagar: Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha Friday chaired weekly meetings with Covid Task Force, SSPs, and reviewed the Covid response and containment measures of the Districts’ Administrations.

Emphasizing on adopting multifold strategies to prevent the third wave, the Lt Governor passed specific directions for further enhancing the Testing and Tracing in the coming days.

Maximum vaccination, continuously analyzing the situation, strict adherence to Covid protocols, and enforcement of containment measures should be the focused area of the administration at all levels to tackle the future health challenges, observed the Lt Governor.

We need to consolidate the substantial gains achieved in containing the spread and accord highest priority to the areas reporting new positive cases. The sustained decline in positivity rate must be maintained, the Lt Governor told the officials.

While taking stock of the cumulative Covid vaccination, the Lt Governor observed that the J&K Government has substantially ramped up the vaccination capacity across the UT, which will add to the efforts of inoculating the maximum population.

He directed the officials to work with renewed energy for increasing the speed of vaccination in the 18-44 age group and meet the targets in a time-bound manner.

Stressing on strict enforcement of containment measures, the Lt Governor directed the district authorities to clearly demarcate the containment zones at the micro-level.

1st vaccine for people aged 12, above approved in India

New Delhi: The world’s first DNA platform based Covid-19 vaccine by Zydus Cadila has received approval for Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) from the drug regulatory authority on Friday, the union government informed.

The vaccine, ZyCoV-D, received approval from the Drug Controller General of India (DCGI) on Friday after the Subject Expert Committee recommended its emergency authorisation in a meeting convened on Thursday, government sources said.

ZyCoV-D has become the sixth vaccine added to a large portfolio of Covid-19 vaccines cleared in the country after locally produced Covishield, Bharat Biotech’s Covaxin, Russia’s Sputnik V, the US-made Moderna, and Johnsons and Johnson’s Janssen.

Dr Renu Swarup, Secretary, Department of Biotechnology which partnered with the Zydus to develop the vaccine said that “It is a matter of great pride that India produced the world’s first DNA Covid-19 vaccine.

“We are confident that this will be an important vaccine for both India and the world. This is an important milestone in our Indigenous Vaccine Development Mission and positions India on the Global Map for Novel Vaccine Development,” she added.

The 3-dose regimen vaccine can be administered to adults. It is also the first vaccine that can be administered to children aged 12 and above.

Zydus conducted clinical trials for ZyCoV-D at more than 50 centres in India, making it the largest such trial in the country. The volunteers included around 1,000 children aged 12-18, the first vaccine trial for adolescents in India.

The vaccine is delivered through a needle-free applicator called the PharmaJet to ensure painless intradermal vaccine delivery.

The trials, in over 28,000 volunteers, showed primary efficacy of 66.6 per cent for symptomatic RT-PCR positive cases. This vaccine had already exhibited robust immunogenicity and tolerability and safety profile in the adaptive Phase I/II clinical trials carried out earlier. Both the Phase I/II and Phase III clinical trials have been monitored by an independent Data Safety Monitoring Board (DSMB).

The ministry of science and technology said that the vaccine can easily adapt itself to deal with the mutations in the SARS-CoV-2 virus.

“The plug-and-play technology on which the plasmid DNA platform is based can be easily adapted to deal with mutations in the virus, such as those already occurring,” it added.

Ahmedabad based pharmaceutical firm stated that it plans to manufacture 10-12 crore doses annually. (UNI)
