Flight operations suspended as Kashmir experiences fresh snowfall

42 flights cancelled, only 2 operated; MeT issues ‘Orange’ alert

By: Owais Gul

Srinagar: At least 41 domestic and one international flight were cancelled due to poor visibility while most parts of Kashmir received fresh snowfall, bringing down the temperature further across the Valley. The local Meteorological department has also issued Orange alert as the present weather system of snowfall is expected to “intensify”.

Director Srinagar International Airport, Kuldeep Singh informed that 42 flights including one international flight scheduled to and from Srinagar airport, were cancelled today.

He said that 43 domestic flights were scheduled to and from Srinagar international airport, adding that 41 were cancelled while the operation of remaining two flights is possible as the weather has improved a bit.

Meanwhile, officials said that the passengers of the cancelled flights shall be rescheduled in the next available flight of the concerned airlines and that there will be no extra charges for rescheduling.

In the evening hours, two flights were operated as the visibility had improved to a large extent, officials said.

Moreover, most parts of Kashmir including the famous ski-resort Gulmarg, Sonamarg, Srinagar and others experienced fresh snowfall, bringing down the temperature further.

The weatherman has predicted more snow and rains till January 09, 2022. The officials from Meteorological department (MeT) said that there is a possibility of light to moderate snowfall in J&K and Ladakh till January 09, 2022.

As per the advisory, two successive Western Disturbances most likely to affect J&K and Ladakh till January 09. The main activity would be on January 05 and January 08, it said, adding that the system is likely to cause heavy rain/snow in Pirpanjal range of Jammu division (from Bhaderwah to Banihal), upper reaches of Kashmir (Gulmarg, Sonamarg, Baramulla and Kupwara and Drass sub division of Ladakh Union Territory).

The advisory maintained that the fresh snowfall would disrupt surface and air transport including Srinagar-Jammu highway, the only road connecting the Valley with the rest of the States.

There is a possibility of avalanches and landslides in vulnerable areas and also disruption of power in hilly areas as well, it said, appealing people not to venture out in sloppy areas during snowfall.

Meanwhile, authorities said that the major roads including Mughal Road, Srinagar-Sonamarg-Gumri road and others shall remain closed for the traffic in view of snow accumulation.

Although the Srinagar-Jammu highway, the only road connecting Valley with rest of the Valley was open for traffic, the officials, however, appealed people to undertake journey along the highway only after confirming the status of the road from traffic control units. (KNO)

From far-off Pahalgam village, cricketer gets a call for IPL trials

Waseem becomes another Kashmiri to ‘make it big’

By: Ahmad Shabir

Anantnag: With poor sports and educational infrastructure in the area, most of the children in famed tourism spot Pahalgam, abandon their studies to earn livelihood through various tourism activities.

However, Waseem Bashir Khanday from far-off Pahalgam village, Mamal, has a different reason to bid good bye to the regular mode of studies and chose distance mode: the passion for cricket.

Waseem, a right-hand pacer having been called for Indian Premier League (IPL) trials recently by Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), was the staunch cricket lover since his childhood.

After playing street and lawn cricket for several years, Waseem at High School level played under 19 and under 23 at district and state level during his secondary and higher secondary school days.

Waseem’s passion for the game was such that in the absence of sports infrastructure in his area, he used to go to other distant areas like Anantnag and Bijbehara to play cricket with different teams.

At many local tournaments, Waseem impressed one and all with his pace and skill.

“I would spend days and nights away from home to play the game,” Waseem told Precious Kashmir.

Waseem after passing Class 12th decided to carry on his studies through distance mode to ensure that his game is not affected.

“Pursuing studies through regular mode would have affected my game. So I chose to continue my studies through IGNOU to ensure that my game does not suffer,” he said.

Waseem two years ago even went outside to seek coaching from the experts at Karnataka Institute of Cricket (KIOC) Banglore.

“I sought the coaching for around eight months. The reason to seek coaching was to get my skill polished. It was during my coaching that many experts watched me and recommended my name for IPL trials,” Waseem said.

Waseem credits his family and star cricketer Parvez Rasool for making it to IPL trials.

“My family has always been supportive. My parents and brother never went against my choice. Besides, Parvez Rasool always guided me right. I am hopeful that I will get a chance to play IPL. Even if I don’t, making it to trials for such high profile league is also a big thing for me,” Waseem said.

Waseem has become a household name in Pahalgam since he was called for trials by KKR.

NE region to be hub of India’s growth: Modi

ArrayImphal: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday said that Manipur and the Northeastern region will be the hub of India’s developmental mission and the under construction highways in the state would be linked with the southeast Asian countries to boost international trade.

The Prime Minister said that under the “Act East dream” ambitious projects on tourism and connectivity are being implemented with all seriousness while peace has been restored in the region. “Hundreds of militants of the Northeastern region have shunned the path of violence and joined the mainstream of development,” Modi said, while addressing a public gathering at Hapta Kangjeibung ground in Imphal after inaugurating 13 projects and laying foundation stones of nine projects with a total investment of Rs 4,815 crore.

He said that tourism potentialities of Manipur and the Northeastern region are being fully utilised with all types of connectivities. “Before becoming the Prime Minister, I had visited Manipur and witnessed the situation of the state then. There is a sea change in the state now. The entire government of India was brought to the doorsteps of Manipur people. A large number of Central ministers and leaders are working as ‘sevaks’ of the region. Five Central ministers are now from the region.” Highlighting the achievements of Manipuri youths in the field of international sports, the Prime Minister said that youths especially the girls are bringing huge laurels for the country.

“From the Commonwealth games to the Olympics, the Manipuri boys and girls are lifting the Indian flags in the international sports arena. The Indian youths are taking inspiration from the Manipuri sports personalities,” the Prime Minister said.

He said that with the establishment of the modern sports university in Manipur, Indian sports would go further in the sports world across the globe. “It was Moirang in Manipur where the first time the national flag was unfurled (by the Indian National Army headed by Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose) and the same Manipur is in the path of growth now.”

The Prime Minister said that to undertake the National Palm oil cultivation mission in a bigway, Rs 11,000 crore worth schemes have been undertaken by the Central government to make India ‘Aatmanirbhar’ in this sector. The Northeast region, including Manipur would also be benefited through the Palm oil cultivation, he asserted.

Without naming the previous Congress government, the Prime Minister said that Manipur was earlier a ‘blockade state’ and some people are still trying to create problems and instigate violence to hinder the development of the state.

Modi appreciated the state government’s schemes — “Go to Hills” and “Go to Village” to develop the mountainous areas and undertake welfare measures for the people.

The Prime Minister laid the foundation stone for National highways with a project cost of more than Rs 1,700 crore, over 2,350 mobile towers built at a cost of around Rs 1,100 crore and State of the Art 150-bedded Cancer Hospital.
