Ambulance overturns, 2 COVID positive sisters die

Srinagar, September 25: Two sisters were killed and two others injured in a road accident when an ambulance turned turtle near Nipora Mir Bazaar area of Qazigund in South Kashmir’s Kulgam district on Friday.
An official told GNS that, an Ambulance on way from Jammu towards Srinagar bearing no. PB 02 BY 1387 driven by Umer Jehangir son of Mohammad Jehangir of Dangyar Jammu carrying two ladies (COVID-19 positive patients) namely Haji Maryam Sheikh and Zareena Shiekh daughters of Ghulam Mohammad Shiekh of Sangra Bata Kishtwar turned turtle at Nipora stop due to the over speed by the said driver.
In this incident both the ladies died on the spot. Driver and one more person namely Arfan Khan son of Mohammad Sadiq of Poonch were also injured.
One of the lady’s body is lying in Vessu hospital and another at District hospital Anantnag.
Meanwhile a case has been registered and investigation taken up.(GNS)

Ganderbal, Sept 25: A research scholar from central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district has brought laurels to Jammu and Kashmir by winning “Her Rising Awards 2020” for which she was nominated earlier.
Mir Muskan-un-Nisa, a resident of Arampora Ganderbal, who is a research scholar at SKUAST, Kashmir bagged the “Her Rising Award 2020” in women starters category and she was declared winner in India’s largest carrier fair for women.
The award ceremony which was scheduled to be held at Bangalore, however, due to COVID-19 it was held online.
Muskan said that she is very happy for winning ‘Her Rising Award 2020’ in the starter category among over one thousand candidates.
“I got this award on the basis of achievements, life experience, dedication to a vision and intelligent persistence. I was representing Kashmir,” she said.
She said that she was also applauded by CEO JobsForHer for getting All India 5th rank in ICAR JRF exams, silver medal in all India inter agriculture university youth festival, best photography award in national level photography competition and many other awards.
Muskan said thanked her parents, relatives, friends and colleagues for voting for her and helping her in getting this award.
“The aim of my life is to work for the welfare of the society. Whether it is my profession or any other work, my sole aim is to work for the welfare of my own society,” she said—(KNO)

3 youth prevented from joining militancy in B’pora: Police

Bandipora, Sept 25: Police on Friday claimed to have prevented three youth from joining the “violent path” in Sumbal area of north Kashmir’s Bandipora district.
Bandipora police on its official Twitter handle informed that they prevented 3 youth of sumbal area from taking the violent path.
“Parents are in particular requested to guide, counsel and be in touch of their children to prevent them from being misguided by negativity. Stay alert stay safe,” the tweet reads.
Meanwhile, a senior police officer said the identities of the youth cannot be disclosed.
“The youth were taken to police station where they were properly counselled in presence of their family members and after which they were handed over to their families,” he said. (KNO)

Court rejects bail of 60-yr-old rape accused

Srinagar, Sept 25: Chief Judicial Magistrate rejected the bail of a rape accused through virtual mode on Friday.

The father of a minor girl (17) had registered a complaint that a 60 year old man identified as Nazir Khuru of Pamposh Colony Noorbagh area of Srinagar has tarnished the chastity of her daughter. Accordingly Police Station Safa Kadal as per KNT, arrested the accused and registered a case vide FIR number 13/2020 under section 176 against him.

During the course of investigation it was found that victim is 6 months pregnant.

The accused is currently languishing in Jail while he had applied for bail through his Counsel which the court of Chief Judicial Magistrate Gowhar Majid Dalal rejected outrightly after hearing the arguments and counter arguments. (KNT)

Ladakh, Sept 25: The administration in Ladakh has asked the apex body for 6th schedule to seek prior permission for organizing any gathering across Leh in view of the code of conduct.
Addressing a joint press conference, the leaders of the apex body in Leh said authorities have directed them to get permission prior to organizing any gathering in view of the code of conduct enforced by the election authority Leh.
The leaders said that the apex body still stands by its boycott decision and with regard to the same, some programs were scheduled to be held in parts of Leh by designated teams and some had already left but in the meantime police and administration intimated them not to hold any gathering without permission.
They said considering the directions, all the scheduled programs were deferred and programs in offsite areas were also called off. “We believe if all the norms based on democratic lines are peacefully followed, there won’t be any hurdle then,” they said.
About reports of talks with the Union Government, the leaders said that a conversation has taken place and they are hopeful of something very positive.
Meanwhile, Jammu and Kashmir Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), General Secretary (Org), Ashok Koul, in Leh told media persons that he was misquoted about the word “Nonsense” and there were no such intentions for referring any such words for the people of Leh.
He said that he has worked with almost all the senior leaders in Leh and they know his intentions and are well aware about his contribution for Leh and its prosperity.
Furthermore, he said, “I still regret if anyone’s feelings are hurt and I am with all the demands of people and I will ensure the demands reach our national body.”
Asked about the stand of BJP on 6th schedule, he said “we are with the demand of constitutional safeguard be it 6th schedule or any other.” (KNO)

Srinagar, Sept 25: Around 200 trucks that carry garbage to the dumping site at Achan have gone off the roads from last few days for want of fuel, leaving the Srinagar literally stinking.
The huge piles of garbage have accumulated in various localities from last few days as the trucks are stuck after a petrol pump owner stopped filling the fuel as government owes over Rs 80 lakhs to him.
Heaps of waste have been lying in various garbage collection areas for these days even as the staff of Srinagar Municipal Corporation continues to carry door to door collection every day. “After collection, the garbage is dumped at these sites which only add to garbage piles getting bigger.”
A senior official at SMC said Chief Accounts Officer has been on leave from last one month and in absence of the alternative, the outstanding amount of the petrol pump owner piled up to around Rs 80 lakhs.
When contacted, Commissioner SMC Gazanfar Ali confirmed that there has been outstanding amount of around Rs 80 lakhs lakhs on account of the filling of the fuel to the trucks.
“There are more 175 trucks that lift the garbage every day. Due to non availability of the Chief Accounts Officer who was on leave from last one month, the outstanding to the petrol pump owner has piled up and he has stopped providing fuel to the trucks,” he said.
“I am thankful to Financial Commissioner Arun Mehta and Director General, who have issued orders giving additional charge of CAO to Rafiq Ahmad Shah who joined today,” he said.
Gazanfar said now that the message has gone to the petrol pump owner that CAO has joined, he would resume providing petrol to SMC truck from Saturday.
“Hopefully, form tomorrow the normal operation will resume and all piles of garbage will be removed from streets,” he added. (GNS)

Srinagar, Sept 25: Advisor to Lieutenant Governor, Baseer Ahmad Khan Friday chaired a meeting to review the functioning of JK Rural Livelihood Mission (JKRLM) at SKICC here.

On the occasion the Advisor also released e-Coffee Table Book of JK Rural Livelihood Mission.

The meeting was also attended by Secretary Rural Development and Panchayat Department Sheetal Nanda, Mission Director JKRLM Rubina Kousar, Additional Mission Director JKRLM and District Project Managers.

The Advisor took a first-hand feedback from the District Project managers of the Kashmir division about the functioning of Self Help Groups (SHGs) and the various activities undertaken by these groups. He also asked them about the panchayats they have covered and the challenges being faced by SHGs.

The Advisor directed the officers to keep monitoring of the different activities on a periodical basis for the effective delivery of the services.

Emphasizing that there is a need for sound business management plan, the Advisor said that the activities being executed have a potential to change the rural economy and give a major facelift to the lives of people.

The Advisor said that the SHGs are a major source of employment and they will be provided every kind of support from the government. He said that the focus should be on economic empowerment of women with positive and direct effect on the households and the society as a whole.

Advisor stressed to focus on convergence with line departments for availing the benefits from all the existing government schemes and also asked them to focus on Rural Haats and vegetable production in poly houses.

Emphasizing on the regular field visits by the officers in their respective blocks, he instructed the block managers to ensure proper monitoring and execution of the scheme and its components at block and District level.

The Advisor was briefed about the implementation of SRLM in Jammu and Kashmir and was given out that 43383 SHGS have been formed under JKRLM (Umeed). It was given out in the meeting that 3.78 lakh rural women have been mobilized into SHGS in 96 blocks across the 20 districts of J&K, besides 23 blocks have been covered under NITI Ayog (Aspirational Districts).

Under the Mahila Kissan Sashaktikaran Pariyojana, the farm based livelihoods is being implemented in the 6 blocks focusing on low cost management of livestock and sustainable agricultural practices.

The Advisor was also briefed that 1136 new Start Up Village Entrepreneurship Programme (SVEP) have been created while 244 existing SVEPs have been strengthened.

Students gear up to appear in exams amid COVID-19 threat

Srinagar, Sep 24: Amid COVID-19 threat students are preparing to appear in exams which will be conducted J&K Board of School Education (J&KBOSE) and other institutions, but everyone seems to be worried about the safety of the students and the staffers who will be involved in the process.
A teacher while talking to Precious Kashmir said, “As far as board exams are concerned these have to be held offline. There cannot be any other mode. We know everyone has got safety concerns but strict instructions have been passed to follow the COVID protocol.”
An official said, “There are reports that the COVID vaccine may come by the year end. It means that we will have to wait. It’s not possible to hold examinations during winter. If the process is postponed it means students will have to wait till March and it could lead to them losing one year.”
However, Kashmir University and other varsities in the Valley have decided to hold the examinations through online mode to prevent the students from gathering at one place. “We are following the UGC guidelines. We want to ensure that students complete their degrees on time,” said a professor from KU.
He said, “COVID-19 pandemic has complicated the situation but we are ensuring that students don’t suffer. During all these months, online classes were a regular feature and now exams too will be held online.”
It’s in place to mention here that earlier this week authorities had reopened the schools for classes 9th to 12th on voluntary basis but students stayed away as parents made it amply clear that they don’t want to put the lives of their children at risk.
A medico said, “The COVID-19 virus is very much present within the community and it’s spreading at a very fast pace. For the past many days J&K has been recording more than 1000 cases daily and it’s a cause of concern. But there is a silver lining also that people are no more scared of catching COVID. They are ready to fight it out. Recovery rate has also increased.”
He said, “The only worry for everyone is how this virus will behave in winter. If it remains under check many of us believe that worst phase will be over and the vaccine will act as a protective cover. It’s just matter of time before we get rid of this pandemic. One hopes that students follow the COVID protocol while appearing for examinations as at present that’s the only safeguard.”

Srinagar, Sep 24: Prominent Srinagar lawyer, advocate Babar Qadri was shot dead by gunmen here, while a CRPF officer was killed in a militant attack in Budgam district and a militant was killed in a gunfight with the security forces in Pulwama district, officials and reports said on Thursday.
Quoting officials news agency KNO said that advocate Babar Qadri was fired upon by the unknown gunmen outside his residence in Hawal area.
The Advocate, who is survived by two minor daughters and his wife, was shifted to SKIMS where he was declared brought dead. The body was later handed over to the family for last rites.
Meanwhile, former chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir and National Conference (NC) vice president, Omar Abdullah in a tweet condemned his killing and termed it as tragic. “The assassination of Babar Qadri this evening is tragic & I unequivocally condemn it. The sense of tragedy is all the more because he warned of the threat. Sadly his warning was his last tweet,” Omar tweeted.
Former minister and Peoples Conference (PC) president, Sajad Gani Lone in a tweet said that one more Kashmiri falls to bullets. “Sad news. Advocate Babar Qadri assassinated. One more Kashmiri falls to bullets. Yet another victim of conflict. My thoughts with the family,” Sajad Lone tweeted.
Apni Party vice president Ghulam Hassan Mir also condemned the killing . “The killing of a young and promising lawyer who represented members of the poorest, most marginalized parts of Kashmir at all the forums available to him, including many of the victims of conflict and their families, has a devastating impact on access to justice in Kashmir,” he said in a statement.
Mir observed that by silencing a lawyer, many victims of the conflict are also silenced. “We have been reiterating this fact that violence begets violence and use of guns will never achieve anything,” Apni Party senior vice president remarked.
Bharatiya Janata Party spokesman Altaf Thakur also condemned Advocate Babar’s killing.
Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC) strongly condemned the killing of Qadri and urged the government to ascertain the identity of killers for exemplary punishment.

CRPF officer killed in militant attack
A Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) officer was killed on Thursday morning by militants in central Kashmir’s Budgam district.
They said militants shot at and critically wounded a CRPF Assistant Sub Inspector (ASI) at Wadipora Keisarmullah Chadoora in Badgam district this morning. Militants also snatched the weapon of the officer before escaping from the spot, they said.
Later injured was rushed to 92 Base hospital where the ASI, identified as Bodle, a resident of Nagpur succumbed, they said.
CRPF man killed in militant attack at Wadipora, Budgam, riffle snatched too
While talking to the reporters on the sidelines of the wreath laying ceremony of the killed CRPF officer, Director General of Police (DGP) Dilbag Singh said that attackers came on a motor bike. “They will soon be tracked down and punished accordingly,” he said.

Militant killed in Pulwama encounter
A militant was killed in an encounter with the security forces which ensued during a Cordon and Search Operation (CASO) in south Kashmir’s Pulwama district on Thursday, police and defence ministry spokespersons said this afternoon.
Police spokesperson said the operation concluded without any collateral damage.
He said on a tip off about the presence of militants, Special Operation Group (SOG) of Jammu and Kashmir police, CRPF and Rashtriya Rifles (RR) launched a CASO at village Machhama , Tral, in Pulwama district this morning.
However, when the security forces were moving towards a particular area in the village, militants hiding there opened fire, he said adding the fire was retaliated ensuing in an encounter in which an unidentified militant was killed.
Police said slain militant was identified as Irfan Ahmad Dar belonging to Al-Badr.
Defence spokesperson Col Rajesh Kalia said a joint operation was launched this morning based on the inputs by police at Machhama Awantipora in Pulwama.
Area was cordoned off and multiple announcements were through public address system to militants to surrender.
But, he said, militants lobbed grenades on Security forces in return fire was returned. A militant was killed, he said.
Colonel Kalia said one pistol one magazine and five rounds of ammunition were recovered from the slain militant who was earlier apprehended on August 4 by police for lobbing grenade at naka party at National Highway near Charsoo in April 2019. However , he was later released on April 20, 2020 and had gone missing on August 29 and joined militancy.

Gunfight rages in Sirhama
Meanwhile, another encounter broke out between militants and security forces at Sirhama area of Anantnag district. “Lights have been installed and cordoned layers tightened,” a police official told KNO.

Srinagar, Sep 24: Director General of CRPF Dr. A.P Maheshwari and Director General of Police, J&K Dilbag Singh Thursday visited Sopore and Baramulla of north Kashmir where they chaired officers’ meetings to review security scenario in these areas. They also reviewed COVID-19 measures taken by these two forces and also addressed joint Darbar at 53 CRPF Bn. Headquarters Baramulla.
The officers were received by Spl DG CRPF, J&K Zulfiqar Hassan, ADG CRPF HQ Sanjay Arora, IG Kashmir Vijay Kumar, IG CRPF Kashmir Ops Sector Deepak Rattan, DIG NKR M. Suleman Choudhary, SSP Baramulla Abdul Qayoom, SSP Sopore Javid Iqbal, CO. 179 CRPF Bn. Rabish Kumar, CO. 53 CRPF Bn. Vineet Tiwari and other gazetted officers of CRPF, at respective battalion headquarters.
While chairing joint officers meetings at these Battalion Headquarters, the officers lauded the role of JKP & CRPF officers, personnel in maintaining the law & order situation in Jammu and Kashmir. They said that the good work done by the J&K Police/CRPF and the other forces is being recognized at every forum and added that forces will continue their collective work to safeguard the interests of people in Jammu and Kashmir.
They emphasized upon the officers that security grid should be further strengthened at ground level as “militants are desperate to disturb the peace and added that regular briefing at each rank level is essential.”
The meeting at 179 CRPF Bn. Sopore was attended by Spl DG CRPF J&K Zulfiqar Hassan, ADG CRPF HQ Sanjay Arora, IGP Kashmir Vijay Kumar, IG CRPF Kashmir Ops Sector Deepak Rattan, DIG NKR M Suleman Choudhary, SSP Sopore Javid Iqbal, CO 179 CRPF Bn. Rabish Kumar.
While in Baramulla at 53 CRPF battalion besides the above mentioned officers, the meeting was attended by DIG CRPF NKR Anees Sarohi, SSP Baramulla Abdul Qayoom, CO. 53 CRPF Bn. Veent Tiwari, CO. 176 CRPF Bn. Radhey Sham and other gazetted officers.
According to a statement the officers briefed the visiting top officers regarding the measures taken by the two forces on different fronts.
The DGP CRPF Dr. A. P. Maheshwari while addressing the joint Darbar complimented the Jammu and Kashmir Police and other Central forces for their role in successful handling of the security and law & order duties in Jammu and Kashmir.
He praised the personnel for recent operational successes and stressed upon officers to work in tandem with other forces. He said Jammu and Kashmir Police and CRPF have a long association of working together which is helping in achieving the goals.
Addressing the joint Darbar of JKP & CRPF personnel, the DGP J&K Dilbag Singh complimented the officers and cops of Jammu Kashmir Police, CRPF for their efforts in maintaining the peace & order in Jammu and Kashmir.

He said that the synergy, coordination and liasoning between the officers/personnel of different forces at the higher as well as on the ground level have set an example. He said that the achievement made especially during the current year in killing a number of militants speaks itself of the collective efforts of the forces.
The DGP said that synergy between JKP and CRPF not only helped in anti-militants operation but also helped in handling the early crises of containing the spread of COVID-19 pandemic.
Besides the senior officers of Police and CRPF the darbar was attended by the Jawans of Police and CRPF and a number of gazetted/non-gazetted officers of both the forces.
