Public Transport

Since the start of the New Year, there has been an increase in the number of Covid-19 cases in Jammu and Kashmir. In fact, the highest ever daily spike in cases since the start of the pandemic has been breached with 6570.   These are worrying signs especially when the experts have warned that the 3rd wave driven by the omicron variant is all set to peak in the next week or so. Such a situation demands preempting dangers. All measures are needed to be taken to prevent further spread and it needs collective fight. In such a scenario, public transport remains central and critical.  The Director Health Services Kashmir is all set to hold a meeting with various transport unions. Here is hoping that the meeting which is expected to be attended by police officers and regional transport officer Kashmir will evolve some mechanism which will ensure that public transport becomes safer.

When lockdown to prevent covid-19 first wave from spreading, the shutdown of the public transport was central to it. Also, when restrictions were eased, the public transport resumption was not among the activities allowed immediately. Then, the administration held many meetings with transporters, drivers, and others associated with the sector to educate them about dos and don’ts. Services of leading experts were utilized. The government was perfectly right in the endeavor.

Locking the public transport now is implausible. However, the violations of social distancing and goby to wearing face coverings such as masks should not be allowed especially when the cases of covid-19 are spiking. While it is true that cowering in fear of the virus can no longer be an option, as sustenance of everyday life has to be ensured, the government and people cannot take things for granted. For activities to continue, both the government and the public must not allow virus transition at all.

The experience of the first and second waves shows that lockdowns – national or state level – have caused irreparable damage to millions of livelihoods. The complacency of people concerning hygiene and flouting of advisories, as per the experts, have been responsible for the surge in the cases. Advisories need to be taken seriously given that the virus surge is linked to affecting livelihood besides life itself. There should be no laxity in enforcement of Covid Appropriate Behaviour.

Referring to the National Education Policy, he said: “To reap the demographic dividend, the government has created the right environment with the National Education Policy that makes a perfect blend of traditional values and modern skills.”

He also said that it is gratifying to note that India has found a place among the top 50 innovative economies.

About the country’s sportspersons who brought cheers last year as they made their mark at the Olympics and their self-confidence, he said that they will inspire millions of youngsters.

The President said that in recent months, he has witnessed remarkable examples of people strengthening the country and the society through their commitment and action in diverse areas.

“The dedicated teams of the Indian Navy and Cochin Shipyard Ltd have built indigenous state of the art aircraft carrier IAC Vikrant which is to be inducted into our Navy,” he said, adding that due to such modern military capabilities, India is now counted among the world’s leading naval powers.

“This is an impressive example of moving towards self-reliance in the field of defence.”

The President said that today, it is our soldiers and security personnel who carry on the legacy of national pride. He said, when a brave soldier dies on duty, the entire country feels sad. Last month, in an unfortunate accident, the country lost one of the bravest commanders – General Bipin Rawat, his wife and many other brave soldiers and the entire country was deeply saddened by the tragic loss, he said.

Highlighting that India will cross a milestone when it completes 75 years of Independence, the President said that the country has been celebrating this as ‘Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav’. “It is a great opportunity for not only the next generation but all of us to reconnect with our past… our freedom struggle was an inspiring chapter in our splendid saga. In this 75th year of Independence, let us re-discover the values that animated our glorious national movement,” he added.

Kovind also said that all had, on January 23, observed the 125th birth anniversary of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, who had adopted the energising salutation of ‘Jai Hind’ and his quest for independence and his ambition to make India proud “inspire all of us”.

Meanwhile, President Kovind said the armed forces will benefit from better gender balance as the National Defence Academy opens its doors for women.

He also paid tributes to late Chief of Defence Staff General Bipin Rawat and 13 others, who died in a chopper accident last month. President Kovind, who is the Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, said he was glad to note that it has been “a water-shed year for women empowerment in the Armed Forces”.

“Our daughters have broken a glass ceiling, and permanent commission has now been allowed for women officers in new areas. Also, the talent pipeline for the forces will be strengthened with women coming through Sainik Schools and the prestigious National Defence Academy. Consequently, our Armed Forces will benefit with better gender balance,” he said. The President also paid tributes to General Rawat, and said the nation feels sad at the loss of every soldier. “Last month, in an unfortunate accident, we lost one of the bravest commanders of the country – General Bipin Rawat – his wife and many brave soldiers. The entire country was deeply saddened by the tragic loss,” he said. The highly-decorated India’s first Chief of Defence Staff General Rawat, his wife and 12 other military personnel were killed in a helicopter crash in Tamil Nadu on December 8.

“Today, it is our soldiers and security personnel who carry on the legacy of national pride. In the unbearable cold of the Himalayas and in the excruciating heat of the desert, far away from their families, they continue to guard the motherland,” the President said.

“It is thanks to the constant vigil of the armed forces securing our borders and the police personnel maintaining internal security within the country that their fellow citizens enjoy a peaceful life. When a brave soldier dies on duty, the entire country feels sad,” he said. President Kovind also said patriotism strengthens the sense of duty among citizens.

“Whether you are a doctor or a lawyer, a shopkeeper or an office-worker, a sanitation employee or a labourer, doing one’s duty well and efficiently is the first and foremost contribution you make to the nation,” he added. IANS/UNI
