Modi redefined concept of women development: Shah

New Delhi: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Monday said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has changed the concept of women’s development into women-led development, thus opening doors of opportunities for them.

Taking to Twitter, he said: “Today the girls are excelling in all the arenas taking the nation to greater heights. On the occasion of ‘National Girl Child Day’, I extend my best wishes to every daughter of India, the pride of the country.”

“Sri Narendra Modi, after becoming Prime Minister in 2014 appealed to the nation to adopt many schemes like ‘Beti Bachao-Beti Padhao’ for daughters as a symbol of pride and self-respect in the whole country which has resulted a mass campaign and led to a revolutionary improvement in the sex ratio,” Shah said in his message.

National Girl Child Day or Rashtriya Balika Diwas is celebrated every year on January 24. This annual commemoration helps raise awareness on the need to protect and safeguard the girl child and aims to help tackle these issues and give them an equal and just chance at life.

Initiated by the Ministry of Women and Child Development in 2008, this observance has become a key opportunity to raise awareness of inequities that girls face in Indian society. (IANS)

KPDCL kept Kashmir illuminated this winter

By: Sameer Lone

Srinagar: As the harshest phase of winters is set to end by this weekend, the Kashmir Power Development Corporation Limited (KPDCL) deserves big thumbs up for the way it managed to ensure the electricity in this bone-chilling cold.

From ensuring best of the possible uninterrupted power supply to seeing its men on electric poles fixing electric wires, the department has done the job that is full of applause and the role has been more significant during the first and the second snowfall.

During the intervening night of 3rd and 4th January when Kashmir witnessed a snowfall that started accumulating and electricity too went off in different areas, the field staff of the KPDCL were on the toes to keep our houses illuminating.

“We saw for the first time in our lives that it was snowing and the field staff of KPDCL were fixing electric wires. They may not have been able to fully restore the power supply everywhere, but we must acknowledge the fact that they were on their toes and tried their best. This was authenticated from the fact that when there was a huge accumulation of snow on Jan 5th and Jan 6th the power supply was restored in many areas of the valley,” said Nisar Ahmed Mir, a local contractor.

People on social media also hailed the KPDCL for their exemplary work during this winter.

According to the senior officials of KPDCL, during both the snowfalls the work was being monitored 24*7.

“On both the instances when we witnessed snowfall, 95 % load capacity was restored in 12 hours and 100 percent load capacity was restored in less than 24 hours,” Aijaz Ahmad Dar, Chief Engineer KPDCL told Precious Kashmir.

According to Dar, the KPDCL, this winter, never allowed the load capacity to drop below 800 MW even during the heavy snowfall that was received in the first week of January.

Asked how this all was achieved, Dar said that the KPDCL had done a proper homework and were fully prepared to ensure the best of the possible electricity this winter.

“Intensive branch cutting of trees was done to ensure smooth and fault free carrying capacity of electric wires. The damaged electric poles across length and breadth of Kashmir were renovated and repaired, which has helped to reduce Transmission and Distribution (T&D) losses,” he said.

The KPDCL, has set in motion a 24*7 call centers where the consumer complaints are addressed within the minimum possible time and a buffer stock of transformers are available to meet any exigency.

“The damaged transformers are repaired in no time. This all is possible due to the real monitoring system which we have designed this winter. The task forces have been set up to scan areas and rectify technical problems,” said Dar.

He said the technical outages of 11 Kv and 33 KV are restored in the shortest possible time.

CS sets Apr 15 deadline for completion of Panthyal tunnel

Jammu: Chief Secretary, Dr. Arun Kumar Mehta Monday chaired a meeting to review the condition of the National Highway-44 connecting Jammu and Srinagar, and take stock of the traffic movement thereon.

Principal Secretary, Public Works (R&B) Department, representative of NHAI, Deputy Commissioner, Ramban, and district SP, Ramban participated in the meeting.

It was informed that the Department has prioritized construction and maintenance of the national highway-44 which has kept the highway open for vehicular traffic even during extreme weather vagaries.

The Chief Secretary was apprised of the recent traffic disruption on the highway due to the breakdown of an overloaded vehicle carrying 36-ton dry ration in violation of the laid down norms.

The Chief Secretary directed for ascertaining reasons for the incident to prevent recurrence of such incidents in future. He further directed the NHAI and traffic police to forthwith put in place a mechanism for calibrated checking of all load carriers to prevent plying of overloaded vehicles, which not only disrupts the usual traffic flow but also compromises the road quality.

Dr. Mehta maintained that all load-carrying vehicles are to be passed through weighing bridges at toll plazas in a staggered manner to avoid any jams and action against overloaded vehicles is to be initiated to ensure smooth flow of traffic.

Further, the concerned agencies were asked to submit daily violation reports and weekly action taken reports to the higher offices and establish zero tolerance to traffic violations and plying of overloaded vehicles. They were asked to conduct regular drives to check traffic violations.

Reviewing the progress of works at the Panthayal Tunnel, the Chief Secretary directed the NHAI to double its efforts and complete the pending works by 15th April 2022.

The Chief Secretary emphasized that on completion, the tunnel will provide reliable connectivity by-passing the current landslide-prone stretch of NH-44 and as such will provide safe and secure transit to vehicles.

To further facilitate smooth traffic flow on the Ramban- Banihal stretch of the National Highway, the traffic police and district administration were directed to properly demarcate single-lane driving zones and ensure lane-driving and traffic discipline among the commuters. Dr. Mehta also emphasized wearing of body cameras by traffic police.

104 to 135 militants waiting across LoC to sneak in: BSF

Srinagar: Around 104 to 135 militants are ready to sneak into the Indian side of the Line of Control (LoC), Raja Babu Singh, Inspector General (IG) of Border Security Force (BSF) said on Monday.

The IG BSF said that post ceasefire agreement last year, the overall situation on Kashmir LoC remained peaceful, but the fresh intelligence inputs suggest that 104 to 135 militants are ready to sneak into this side.

“Some guides have crossed over to the other side of LoC to facilitate the infiltration of the waiting militants. Their movement is being tracked and their families are under constant watch of security agencies,” the IG said while addressing the annual conference at the BSF headquarters in Humhama on the outskirts of Srinagar city.

The IG BSF Kashmir Frontier said, “Our inputs suggest that there are 104 to 135 militants at the launch pads who are ready to infiltrate into this side”.

“Their movement is being tracked. The primary job of the guide is to bring groups of militants along”, he said.

Asked about the drone threats on LoC, the IG BSF said that it guards 96 kms of LoC in Kashmir and the drone threat was real.

“We are procuring our own drones to counter the drone threat. Besides, a series of measures are in place to deal with drone threats,” he said.

He said that last year 17.3 kg heroin worth Rs 88 crore was seized on the LoC by BSF and all efforts are being made to foil bids aimed at transporting narcotics from LoC. He said the Taliban takeover in Afghanistan last year has not affected J&K in any form so far, but the security agencies are monitoring the situation closely. (IANS)
