Counter misinformation in digital age: PM to NCC cadets

New Delhi, Jan 28: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday warned against the “dangers of misinformation” in digital age and asked NCC cadets to counter it with awareness campaigns.

Addressing the National Cadet Corps Rally at Cariappa Ground, the PM said, “Today on the one hand there are good possibilities related to digital technology and information, on the other hand, there are dangers of misinformation. It is also necessary that the common man of our country should not fall prey to any rumour. The NCC cadets can run an awareness campaign for this.”

The PM asked NCC cadets to combine their aspirations and action with the development and aspirations of the country.

He said that the cadets should come forward to engage with school dropouts and try to remove their obstacles to ensure education to them. There is another area which needs our attention – deteriorating imbalance in virtual and real life, NCC cadets can work in this direction, he said.

The Prime Minister stressed that drugs should not reach the school/college where there is NCC or NSS. He advised the cadets to be free from drugs themselves and, at the same time, keep their campus free from the menace.

He stressed that the students should help their non NCC-NSS friends to give up this bad habit. The Prime Minister remembered with pride his NCC connection and credited his training as an NCC cadet for giving him the strength to carry out his responsibilities towards the nation.

He talked about the steps being taken to strengthen the NCC in the country and said that a high-level review committee was set up in the country and one lakh new cadets were created in the border areas of the country. He noted the presence of the large number of the girl cadets in NCC and termed it to be a symbol of changing attitude of the nation.

“Daughters are taking admission in Sainik Schools and women are getting major responsibilities in the Indian Army. The daughters of the country are flying fighter planes in the Air Force. In such a situation, it should be our endeavour that more and more daughters are included in NCC,” he said.

“No power of the world can stop a country whose youth starts moving ahead with the thinking of ‘nation first’. India’s success in the playfield and the startup ecosphere exemplify this very clearly,” the PM said.

The Prime Minister paid tributes to Lala Lajpat Rai and Field Marshal Cariappa for their contribution in nation building as both have birth anniversaries on Friday.

In the beginning, the PM inspected the Guard of Honour, reviewed March Past by NCC contingents and witnessed the NCC cadets displaying their skills in army action like slithering, microlight flying, parasailing etc. The best cadets also received medal and baton from the Prime Minister. (UNI)

Country’s security top priority: Amit Shah

Dehradun, Jan 28: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Thursday recalled the surgical strike conducted by India against neighbouring Pakistan and said Prime Minister Narendra Modi sent a message to the world that anyone who intrudes our country’s territory will have to pay a heavy price.

“After Narendra Modi ji became the Prime Minister, Pakistan committed a mistake as it thought this government is same like the previous Manmohan Singh’s one and attacked in Uri. The Narendra Modi government ordered a surgical strike (in 2016) in their own territory and took revenge of our martyred soldiers. Modi ji gave a message to the world that if anyone intrudes into our territory they will have to pay a heavy price,” Shah said, while addressing the ex-servicemen in Rudraprayag as he appealed them and the people of the state to vote BJP to power again in the forthcoming Assembly elections.

The Home Minister said the BJP government was committed to the country’s security and welfare of the soldiers. “Country’s security and welfare of the soldiers are the top priority of our government,” Shah said.

Talking about ‘One rank, one pension’ scheme, Shah said, “In 2014 general elections, in our manifesto, we vowed to implement ‘One rank one pension’ as Congress party did nothing in this regard. After the Narendra Modi government rode to power, we implemented it.”

Accusing the previous Congress-led UPA government of neglecting the Defence sector, the Home Minister said, “In Defence Budget, during Congress’ 10 year regime, it witnessed a decline. But, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi ji it increased drastically. We have taken various initiatives to make the Defence sector ‘self-reliant’.”

Remembering country’s first Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General Bipin Rawat, who hailed from the Himalayan state, Shah said Late Gen Rawat devoted his life for the country and added that his contribution cannot be forgotten.

Attacking the previous Congress government in the state, the Home Minister said,”During Harish Rawat’ s government there was only corruption, but in BJP’s tenure there is no allegation of any corruption against it.”

He also demanded that Rawat should give an account to the people on what he had done for the state’s infrastructure during his tenure as Chief Minister. Assembly elections in Uttarakhand will be held in a single phase on February 14. The counting of votes will take place on March 10.

BSF to get over 100 steel fabricated habitats along LoC in J&K

Amresh Srivastava

New Delhi, Jan 28 (IANS): The Border Security Force will soon get over 100 steel fabricated composite habitats along the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir, BSF officials said on Friday.

According to the officials, the BSF is in the process of setting up over 100 steel fabricated containers in high altitude Forward Defence Localities (FDLs) along the LoC to protect its troopers from the inclement weather, with an attached kitchen and toilets. The total cost of these will come to around Rs 35 crore, they added.

“These steel fabricated living accommodations will be insulated from inside, have bunk bed facilities and will have both solar and generator power supply,” a senior BSF official said, adding that the locations of these FDLs will range from 8,000 feet to 15,500 feet.

The proposal for these units has been sent to the Ministry of Home Affairs which has approved it in principle. A further process for financial sanction is underway.

The BSF officials have already contacted senior officials of the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy in Delhi to get solar power projects sanctioned for these FDLs which has also been approved.

At present, all activities at these locations including cooking and daily ablutions, are carried out using power sourced from kerosene and diesel, they said.

These upcoming habitats will accommodate at least 12 troopers at a time and the attached kitchen will have all facilities to serve freshly cooked food in even the most inclement and harsh conditions. The kitchen and toilets will be attached to the main living huts.

As of now, the troops at these icy locations at altitudes ranging from 8,000 feet-16,000 feet, live in corrugated galvanized iron sheet-made hutments along with their rations and weapons, exposing them to the sub-zero temperatures. Due to the weather, the areas remain snow clad on an average of five to seven months in a year.

The BSF has already finalized the design of these steel huts which will be provided with entertainment systems too. The officials said that once they get final clearance from the government, the construction of these huts will start at the higher altitudes first. They expect that the construction work can start from May-June onwards.

They said that before finalizing the design, they evaluated the composite Border Out Posts (BoPs) of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police and that of the Army deployed on the higher altitudes to equip them with modern facilities.

The BSF move came after the visit of Director General Pankaj Kumar Singh to these locations in November last year and a proposal was sent to the MHA for approval and the MHA has approved it. The solar power panels that will be installed by the New and Renewable Energy Ministry will help in reducing the carbon footprint and pollution generated because of heavy use of diesel and kerosene by the troopers for their cooking and other needs.

“Under the prevailing conditions for more than five to seven months, it is indeed very hard to survive and protect the borders as the weather is itself a strong enemy”, an officer in the central security forces deployed in the J&K security grid said. Once these steel habitats are set up at these altitudes, the troopers will man the borders in a better way and with more alertness, he added.

Apart from the LoC, the BSF is tasked to guard about 2289 km of the India-Pakistan International Border, ranging from Jammu to Punjab, Rajasthan and up to Gujarat in the western part of the country. (IANS)
