England sack Graham Thorpe as assistant coach of men’s team

London:  Graham Thorpe on Friday became the third big casualty of England’s Ashes 4-0 debacle with the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) announcing his departure.

On Wednesday, Ashley Giles was sacked as the managing director of the men’s team while head coach Chris Silverwood left the post on Thursday. ECB also said that coaching arrangements for the West Indies tour will be announced in due course.

“I’ve been very fortunate to have worked with so many good players and coaches who I consider my friends for life,” said Thorpe in a statement by the ECB. “I’d like to thank Graham for his work over many years on the England coaching staff and wish him the best for the future,” said Sir Andrew Strauss, Interim Managing Director of men’s cricket.

Strauss, quoted as saying in Daily Mail at the Lord’s Cricket Ground, backed Joe Root to continue as the Test captain despite the drubbing in the Ashes.

“Having spoken to Joe it is absolutely clear the extent of his commitment to moving this England team forward. He’s got incredible motivation and energy to do that. He’s bruised, hugely disappointed by what went on in the Ashes and I think it goes without saying there are many others in the same boat on that one.”

“But he has the respect of the players, they all play for him, and he sets a magnificent example both on and off the field so I’m very happy to give him my support and make sure he has the right structure around him to take pressure off him and make sure he can do his job.”

Strauss also stated his intentions to have an interim coach of the men’s team before England depart for a three-match Test series against the West Indies.

“There are decisions to be made on the focus of the tour. It’s very important we go out and win but it’s also about looking forward and we have to think about that with the interim coach and selection.”

“The only way we can look at it at the moment is to get through the West Indies tour and after that, there will be some time for us to step back and think strategically about what is needed. We want someone who can add value to the team.”

Strauss ruled himself from coming back into cricketing activities full-time to focus on his family, especially after the death of his wife Ruth.

“This is short-term. My role is to help prepare the team for the West Indies series and to recommend some structural changes and help Tom Harrison with the recruitment of the roles, including the new managing director of England cricket. However long it takes I’m prepared to play that role.”

MCH Anantnag: Non-availability of ventilators compels doctors to refer neonates to Srinagar

By: Ahmad Shabir

Anantnag: Even as the lone maternity and child hospital (MCH) in South Kashmir remains under the administrative control of the Government Medical College Anantnag for last over two years, the major healthcare facility continues to be without ventilators.

Due to the non-availability of the ventilators, doctors are forced to refer the neonates and children to Srinagar which many a time results into the delay in their treatment.

MCH caters to the patients from entire southern region besides the parts of Jammu including Banihal and Kishtwar. The most overcrowded hospital functions from a space starved building having been declared unsafe by the authorities four years ago. The facility earlier was working under the control of health department and was later associated with the medical college Anantnag.

Though bringing the hospital under the control of medical college Anantnag had raised the hopes of people about improvement in healthcare at the facility but nothing seems to have changed except the installation of new beds.

Despite the government releasing crores of rupees for the infrastructure development of the medical college and its associated hospitals, the authorities have failed to install a ventilators at the facility.

“Children admitted at the hospital are often referred to Srinagar for ventilatory support. Healthcare in the hospital has not improved a bit after it was associated with the medical college,” locals resident who often visit the hospital say.

The delay in the treatment caused by the non-availability of the ventilator at times proves disastrous for the children needing it immediately.

For instance, wife of a local resident, Arif Hassan few weeks ago delivered a premature baby in the hospital. Soon after the baby was born , doctors shifted him to neonatal care unit straightway from.the operation theater.

After several hours as the baby showed no signs of improvement , the doctors clearly told Arif that they have no option but to shift his baby to Srinagar.

“Your baby needs ventilator and we don’t have the one available here. If you want the baby to survive you immediately take him to Srinagar for which we can provide you critical care ambulance,” doctors , Arif said, told him.
Worried about his baby’s health, Arif approached HOD paediatrics to complain about the non-availability of the ventilator.

“When I told him that I will get the issue highlighted , HOD replied ‘please do something so that people can have heave some relief. We too are helpless. If you get it highlighted it will be your favor to the patients,” Arif quoted HOD as having told him.

Principal , GMC Anantnag , Dr Tariq Qureshi said that they have no space for installation of ventilators. “At main hospital campus we have some ventilators for the children above one year but for the babies below the age group of one year we have no facility available. Once MCH is shifted to main hospital campus we will set up an intensive care unit where all the facilities will be ensured,” the Principal said.
