10,000 pilgrims register for Hajj-2022 from J&K, Ladakh: Officials

By:Tasaduq Hussain

Srinagar: At least 10,000 pilgrims from Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh have registered for the Hajj in the ensuing year scheduled to begin from May month while the registration process last date is on 15th of February this month.

Given the 1st and 2nd wave of the deadly COVID-19 infection across the globe, India and the kingdom of Saudi Arabia in the last two consecutive years barred overseas Hajj pilgrims.

Both Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Minister Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi had welcomed the decision of the Saudi government saying that all arrangements for the Hajj were made while they waited for their decision and the central government welcomed the call amid a rise in COVID cases.

After the nod from Saudi Arabia regarding the Hajj 2022 in the ensuing year with a decline in infection cases across the globe, the process for registration started in both Ladakh and Jammu and Kashmir Union Territories back in November last year.

Hajj Officer of Jammu and Kashmir Abdul Salam Mir said that the registration process for both J&K and Ladakh started back in November last year and around 10,000 individuals have registered themselves so far while the final date for same is scheduled on February 15 this month.

He said that so far no pooling of the number of the pilgrims who will leave for Hajj has been shortlisted and it will be done after 15th February in the ensuing month.

The Hajj officer informed that separate guidelines for Hajj this year will be issued once the Saudi government releases them given the Omicron variant infection threat.

“Around 10,000 pilgrims have registered themselves for Hajj this year, of which nearly 250 belong to the union territory of Ladakh,” he said, adding that in the last two consecutive years Hajj was not allowed.

The Hajj officer said that all the pilgrims mandatorily must be vaccinated and before leaving for Hajj here they will undergo COVID-19 testing.

“Two vaccines of India including Covisheild and Covaxin as approved by the World Health Organisation (WHO) are the acceptable vaccines for Hajj this year,” the Hajj officer said. “We don’t accept the registration forms of pilgrims who are not vaccinated. It’s mandatory and a priority in the ongoing situation.”

He said that during Hajj the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP’s) issued by the Saudi Arabia government will be exercised and as of now the native SOP’s are in place including the online registration process given the Omicron variant.

He also informed that in the year 2019, around 17,000 pilgrims had registered for Hajj.

Compared to the figures in the ensuing year the number of pilgrims has come down given the infection scare across the globe and Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.

Both J&K and Ladakh recent have reported a huge spike in daily infection cases in the ongoing 3rd wave of pandemic. (KNO)

PM Modi cites Nehru in response to oppn on inflation

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in his response to the debate on the Motion of Thanks on the President’s Address in the Lok Sabha Monday, cited first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru to counter the opposition’s attacks over inflation.

“The inflation was in two digits before we came to power in 2014. It was the Congress led UPA government’s time when people of this country suffered a lot due to skyrocketing prices. The Congress government has such policies that they themselve accepted that inflation couldn’t be curbed or tamed. Even the Finance Minister of the Congress government made a statement in 2011 in a very disrespectful manner that to curb this inflation, don’t expect magic,” he said.

“Just recall what our first Prime Minister Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru said from the Red Fort on inflation? When globalisation does not exist as it is today…. What he said, the Korean war affected the inflation here in India, pushing the price of essential commodities out of our hands, thus even we couldn’t control them. This was our first Prime Minister on curbing inflation. Even he said that any incident that happened in the US does affect inflation here in our country,” Modi said.

On inflation during the pandemic, he mocked the Congress, saying that if they were in power during the pandemic, they would have made pandemic responsible for raising inflation.

“We didn’t escape from our responsibilities and ensured that inflation should be controlled. So the food inflation is around just 3 per cent,” he said.

Govt to transform 75 J&K villages under tourist village network

Srinagar: Jammu and Kashmir government will transform 75 villages under the Tourist Village Network program Mission Youth to ensure balanced and equitable development of the tourism sector across the Union Territory.

The government under this initiative aims to rejuvenate and transform more than 75 villages in the union territory by promoting tourism and giving sustainable employment for the youth to commemorate 75 years of Independence under “Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav”, an official spokesman said.

In this context, the government started the movement of promoting homestay tourism in the UT by launching Panchari, a village with mesmerizing beauty in district Udhampur as the first tourist village with home stays.

Remarking about this unique initiative, the Lieutenant Governor of J&K Manoj Sinha said that the administration will recognize the uniqueness of each village and showcase the landscape, foster the indigenous knowledge system and promote cultural diversity and heritage of these villages.

Jammu and Kashmir is known all over the world for the tourism sector is one of the main contributors to the GDP. The Tourism Industry earns huge foreign exchange and provides employment to the thousands of unemployed youth.

The initiative launched under the mission youth will work towards giving a facelift to the 75 villages that are already famous for their historical background, picturesque landscape and cultural importance.

The initiative will strengthen the rural economy in the region, turn youth into entrepreneurs and empower women by offering numerous opportunities of employment.

The initiative is also aimed to promote shooting of films and offering financial aid to the villages for their sustainable development.

All villages which are part of the initiative will also be provided a digital footprint.

It will also provide maximum job opportunities to the youth from different backgrounds and ensure their participation in the policies that have an impact on their lives.

This initiative of Tourist Village Network has the potential and propensity to mobilize the diverse geographical and socio-economic landscape of the union territory.

These are several regions in the union territory which despite having greater tourism potential, have not been able to garner requisite attention due to infrastructural bottlenecks.

Destinations which lag behind in the sphere of tourism infrastructure, can overcome the downsides by introducing homestays as a means of accommodation facilities for the tourists which do not require heavy investment.

This new initiative will surely be the harbinger of change especially for those regions which have remained underdeveloped and neglected. (UNI)

Kohli will get runs whether he is playing under Rohit or anybody else: Gavaskar

New Delhi: Legendary cricketer Sunil Gavaskar has said that Virat Kohli will continue to score runs despite not being the captain of the team anymore, and rubbished speculation about a rift between Rohit Sharma and the former skipper.

Earlier in December last year, Kohli had also cleared the air on rumours that he has a rift with Rohit, saying he was tired of answering the same question again and again when he was addressing the press.

Kohli now played under Rohit for the first time in ODI cricket as the latter took over as India’s full-time captain in limited-overs in India’s first ODI against the West Indies on Sunday in Ahmedabad.

Gavaskar told Star Sports, “Why would they not be getting along? They are playing for India. All these talks about two players not gelling is always speculation.”

“According to reliable sources or allegedly or reportedly. Nobody actually tells you and this has been happening for years. And these guys don’t even bother about it. You wouldn’t even bother about this kind of speculation because you yourself know what the truth is. And so there is nothing,” he added.

Gavaskar said there is no way Kohli will not be thinking of performing under Rohit’s captaincy.

“There are often speculations that the captain who is now a player in the team will not want the new captain to succeed. This is nonsense. Because if he doesn’t score runs or a bowler doesn’t pick wickets then he is going to be out of the team,” Gavaskar added.

“He has already lost the captaincy or opted out of captaincy, now you don’t contribute with the bat or ball then you are going to be out of the team. So all these talks are mere speculations from people who have nothing better to do and are trying and creating stories.

“Kohli will get runs whether he is playing under Rohit or anybody else. He is going to score runs for India,” Gavaskar said.

India have taken a 1-0 lead in the three-match series and they will be looking to wrap up the ODI series when they face West Indies in Ahmedabad in the second ODI on Wednesday.
