Restrictions imposed near Brengi Stream Sinkhole

Srinagar: Authorities in Kashmir valley have imposed restrictions on the movement of public and media persons at the sinkhole created in Brengi Stream at village Wandevalgam of Kokernag in South Kashmir’s Anantnag district as the natural water source poses a threat to life and property.

The  vertical sinkhole, experts believe is a natural phenomenon developed due to the gradual dissolution of limestone rocks in the river, it is attracting large numbers of people to the site and has even caused concerns for the population of the area.

“Despite restrictions being imposed by the sub divisional Magistrate Kokernag on any assembly of general public or movement of individuals near sinkhole, a number of media personnel continue to move close to the site, posing threat to their own lives”, reads an order issued from the office of the Tehsildar Kokernag on Wednesday.

The administration has advised people including all media personnel not to violate the restrictions imposed around sinkhole and warned that action under relevant sections of law will be taken against anyone found violating the order, it said.

A whirlpool has formed in the Brengi stream and the entire water discharges into this hole. This is the second such instance in the recent past in the area that has disrupted the water flow posing threat to flora and fauna downstream.

The stream was diverted earlier, however another sinkhole was naturally caused and all water is flowing into it.

Sources said that about 15 to 20 kilometers of the stream has gone dry and thousands of fish have died in it.

The villagers living around the Brengi stream fear that if authorities do not take immediate measures, it would cause drought to a vast area of agricultural land.

However, the sinkhole had an outlet at Achabal which presently is discharging normally.

A team of Flood Control, Irrigation department, Geology, and Mining, Public Health Engineering (PHEE) department are monitoring the situation and are yet to find the outlet of this sink-hole. (UNI)

Govt rebuts media report

Srinagar: The government on Wednesday rebutted a news report titled “Don’t divert our water sources: Tral residents to Govt”, wherein it was made public that Department of Jal Shakti is diverting the one water source (spring) which could render the hundreds of kanals of agricultural and horticultural land barren in village Machama and other adjoining villages.

It has been reported that people have protested over the alleged design of the Jal Shakti Department and have appealed the Hon’ble LG Manoj Sinha and Deputy Commissioner Pulwama to direct the concerned department, which is Jal Shakti, not to tap the said spring, an official statement said.

In the rebuttal of the news item, Executive Engineer, Jal Shakti Department Division Awantipora has submitted a report vide No: PHE/AWP/7059-61, Dated: 16-02-2022, wherein it has been stated that Water Supply Scheme Brenpathri-Chanikitar was conceptualized in 2012 and after the approval in 2013 by the Government many works including 1.0 Lac Gallon SR, Spring Protection, Fitting of Raw Water Mains, and Supply mains is almost complete; besides, Rapid Stand Filtration Plant is almost 40% complete.

The Jal Shakti Department has also mentioned in the report that the Nagbal Spring has already been tapped decades ago and the Court directions passed in 1981 still stand valid.

The Department mentions that some works on the WSS Nagpathri-Chanikitar have already been withdrawn after the reconciliation with the locals. And, now the inhabitants of Machama are resisting for connecting almost complete spring protection with the SR, and have dismantled some already laid utilities.

In another report submitted by Irrigation Department, it is mentioned that a Zamindari Kohl takes off from local Nallah (Brenpathri Nallah) to provide irrigation to agricultural/horticulture land of villages Machama and Lalpora, and the supplies get further augmented from the spring at Nagbal. The department further says that in normal situations and adequate rainfall, the landholders get enough irrigation supplies for their lands, but otherwise in drought like situation the supplies remain short.

The matter has already been discussed with both the departments and it has been made sure that neither the Water Supply Schemes nor the irrigation would suffer. A middle ground would be taken to settle the issue and redress the grievance of the locals.

It would also be in the fittest of things to mention that the matter has been taken to Court by some locals, and till the outcome of the Court proceedings, deliberations would be done with all the stakeholders and an amicable solution acceptable to all would be the top priority of the administration.

Complaint filed against Arvind Kejriwal for alleged sedition

New Delhi: A complaint has been filed against Delhi Chief Minister and AAP national convenor Arvind Kejriwal at a police station in Mohali in Punjab for his alleged collaboration with Khalistani separatists.

The complainant, Congress leader Sandeep Dixit, in his complaint quoted an interview former Aam Aadmi Party leader, Kumar Vishwas.

As put forth by Dikshit, Vishwas in the interview had spoken about his and Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s conversations during the 2017 Assembly elections in Punjab.

Vishwas had warned Arvind Kejriwal in 2017 against increasing Khalistani separatists. The complaint further read that Kejriwal had ignored the warnings, and said that he will manage them.

“…Thereby accepting that he was in contact with separatists for the Punjab Vidhan Sabha elections,” the complaint read.

It further said that Kejriwal did not express any opposition to the idea of Khalistan and instead supported it, stating that in the said case, ‘he will happily become the Prime Minister of an independent state of Khalistan’.

“The statements were made with an intention to cause, or most likely to cause, fear or alarm within the public. In view of this, a case of sedition has been lodged against Kejriwal,” Dikshit’s complaint read.

Pertinently, no FIR was registered in connection with this till now.

Meanwhile, AAP leader Raghav Chadha refuted the allegations and lashed out at Vishwas for defaming and deriding Kejriwal.

“The malicious, unfounded, fabricated and inflammatory insinuations made by Vishwas are not only demonstrably defamatory, but are redolent of promoting hatred ill will, and hostility in the society, in particular against the AAP,” Chadha said.

1st T20I: India beat West Indies by 6 wickets, take 1-0 series lead

Kolkata: India produced a clinical all-round performance to beat West Indies by six wickets in the first T20I, to take a 1-0 lead in three-match series at the Eden Gardens, here on Wednesday.

A solid bowling performance on his debut by young leg-spinner Ravi Bishnoi (2/17) helped India restrict West Indies to 157/7 in 20 overs despite an attacking fifty by Nicholas Pooran (61 off 43). Apart from Bishnoi, Harshal Patel (2/37) also bowled well to keep things in control of India.

In reply, Rohit Sharma (40 off 19) and Ishan Kishan (35 off 42) gave India a flying start. But once the duo got out, things changed drastically for India and the wickets of Virat Kohli (17) and Rishabh Pant in quick succession put hosts in more trouble.

It was then a crucial partnership between Suryakumar Yadav (34 off 18) and Venkatesh Iyer (24 off 13), which helped India chase down the target in 18.5 overs.

Brief scores:
West Indies 157/7 in 20 overs (Nicholas Pooran 61, Kyle Mayers 31; Ravi Bishnoi 2/17, Harshal Patel 2/37) lost to India 162-4 in 18.5 overs (Rohit Sharma 40, Ishan Kishan 35; Roston Chase 2/14) by six wickets

Class X, XII Result

The J&KBOSE exam results for classes X and XII reflect that students have done better despite unparalleled disruptions due to covid-19 pandemic for the last two years. The students and parents should be commended for putting up a good show. The students who have fared better and succeeded need to take future challenges with more authority while those who have failed must not lose heart and prepare better to excel in life.

Coming back to the results and grand success scripted by students, 293 secured top ten positions in all fours streams—Science, Commerce, Arts and Home Science in 12th Class, according the result declared by the J&KBOSE on February 9. Most of them have been bagged by the girls.  The first 10 positions in Science stream were shared by 248 students. In Commerce, the first 10 positions were shared by 33 students. 61 students shared the first 10 positions in the Arts stream. In Home Science, 12 students shared the first 10 positions, the officials said.  Of the total students, 23573 got distinction while 20716, 9277 and 509 secured first, second and third divisions respectively, as per the data.

In class Xth examinations, the results of which were declared on February 16, a total of 72684 students— 37045 boys and 37045 girls —had appeared last year. 78.43% cleared the examinations and included 78.74% girls and 78.14% boys respectively.

The government schools have also fared better than previous. 67.25% students out of the total 38721 who appeared in the examination cleared it.   Last year 62.76% of students from government schools had passed the examination. Students from private schools have done better with 30967 (91.18%) students out of 33963 tasting success in the examination.  19 students have secured 500 out of 500 marks while 24 secured 499 out of 500.

Comparing the result from previous years, this year, this number of students scoring perfect 100 percent marks has gone up. But all this does not necessarily signify an improvement in the learning environment. There are enough studies to show that the evaluation criteria of the Board examinations do not encourage students to go beyond a rudimentary understanding of the subject, at best. This system needs to be reevaluated. There is hope that there would be no disruptions due to the pandemic and that students will take pen-paper examinations without disruptions and concession of syllabus cuts.
