Collapsed wooden bridge over Lidder endangers lives of people in Srigufwara

Farmers face hardships to reach their orchards

By: Ahmad Shabir

Anantnag: A wooden bridge over the tributary of Lidder in Srigufwara area of Anantnag that has almost collapsed is not only posing threat to the lives of people but also causing severe inconvenience to the farmers, whose land is situated on the other side of the bridge.

Constructed several decades ago, the wooden bridge, according to the locals almost collapsed in the middle, leaving one person minor injured.

The wooden bridge, locals said, is significant for the reason that on the other side of it are vast fields and orchards belonging to locals.

However, after the collapse of the bridge around three months ago, people have been facing severe inconvenience in reaching their orchards.

Since the bridge is at the verge of complete collapse, locals cross it one by one along with their farming tools.

“When even a single person crosses the bridge, it vibrates completely. The women and the men week at heart cannot muster courage to cross the bridge,” said a local, Ghulam Mohiudin.

Another local resident, Khalid Ahmad said that despite the bridge leading to paddy fields and orchards, the authorities have never bothered to construct a concrete bridge over the stream.

“Fearing collapse of the bridge what people now do is that they carry their handcarts and sprayers on their shoulders to take them to other side,” Ahmad said.

Locals wonder as to why the authorities are not constructing a new bridge over the stream or repair this one.

Locals appealed Deputy Commissioner Anantnag to look into the matter and get the new concrete bridge constructed over the stream.
