Srinagar, Aug 24: Dozens of daily wage and casual workers of different department were on Monday taken into preventive custody after they hit the streets in the civil lines, Srinagar, demanding pending wages and regularization of their service.
Wearing coffin, daily wagers and casual workers of different department appeared in the civil lines raising slogans in favour of their demands. However, when the demonstrators tried to hit the main roads, security forces present in the area immediately swung into action and arrested dozens of them.
The slogan shouting daily wagers and casual workers were put into police vehicles and taken to police station.
Earlier, they threatened to intensify their agitation if their genuine demands are not met by the Union Territory (UT) administration.
“We and our families are facing starvation because of no salary for the past more than six months in some cases,” they said adding they could not deposit the school fee of their children.
They further said that despite repeated assurance by previous and present government, their demands were not fulfilled. We have been working in different departments on very meager salary, which is also paid after months of gap, they said and demanded immediate regularization of services of all those who have completed seven years in service.
