MeT predicts rain, snowfall on Oct 13–14
Srinagar, Oct 10: Fresh light snowfall occurred in the higher reaches of Gulmarg in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district on Saturday, as the Meteorological Department forecast another spell of rain and snow across Jammu and Kashmir next week.
The snowfall brought a fresh spell of cold weather to the upper reaches of the famous tourist destination, with cloudy conditions prevailing in the area.
According to the latest weather forecast, Gulmarg is likely to experience mostly cloudy conditions on Saturday, with the possibility of precipitation during the evening and night.
The tourist resort is expected to record a maximum temperature of around 12 degrees Celsius and a minimum of 5 degrees Celsius.
The forecast indicates that cloudy weather will continue on Sunday, October 11, with occasional rain likely during the afternoon and evening. The maximum temperature is expected to remain around 12 degrees Celsius.
On Monday, October 12, partly cloudy conditions are expected, with the possibility of brief afternoon showers.
A fresh spell of unsettled weather is forecast for October 13 and 14, when several parts of Jammu and Kashmir may receive light to moderate rain, while higher elevations could experience fresh snowfall.
Temperatures in Gulmarg are also expected to decline during this period, with the maximum likely to fall to around 9 degrees Celsius on October 13.
The forecast suggests that intermittent showers may continue on October 15 and 16, followed by an improvement in weather conditions.
The Meteorological Department has indicated that generally dry weather is expected across Jammu and Kashmir from October 17 to 22.
The possibility of fresh precipitation comes at a crucial time for Kashmir’s horticulture sector, where apple harvesting and transportation activities are underway.
Farmers and orchardists have been advised to remain cautious during spells of rain and gusty winds and ensure the safe storage of harvested produce.
Meanwhile, the fresh snowfall over Gulmarg’s higher reaches has signalled the gradual onset of colder weather in Kashmir’s mountainous areas ahead of the winter season.
The weather department has advised residents, tourists and those travelling to higher-altitude areas to keep track of updated forecasts, particularly during the anticipated wet spell on October 13 and 14. (KNS)
