Srinagar, Oct 9: Kashmir is expected to witness a brief improvement in weather conditions before another spell of rain, thunderstorms and gusty winds develops next week, the Meteorological Centre Srinagar has forecast, following heavy rain and hailstorms that affected several parts of the Valley on Thursday.
The India Meteorological Department has indicated that weather conditions may remain largely dry on Friday, with the possibility of a brief spell of light rain at isolated places towards the evening. Light rain is also possible at scattered places on Saturday, October 10, accompanied by the possibility of light snowfall over higher reaches.
According to the forecast issued by the Meteorological Centre Srinagar, generally dry weather is expected on October 11 and 12. A brief spell of rain may occur towards the evening or night of October 13, while October 14 and 15 are likely to bring generally cloudy conditions, with light rain and light snowfall over higher reaches at many places. Thunderstorms and gusty winds are also possible during this period.
The department’s warning bulletin issued on October 9 lists the possibility of thunderstorms, lightning and squalls for Jammu and Kashmir on October 9 and 10, with further warnings indicated for October 13, 14 and 15. The forecast does not, however, indicate a continuous spell of heavy precipitation throughout the period.
The weather outlook has particular significance for farmers as harvesting and post-harvest operations continue across the Valley. The Meteorological Centre has advised farmers to continue harvesting and ensure the safe storage of harvested apples and paddy in view of the expected weather conditions.
Strong winds and sudden showers can affect harvested produce, orchard operations and outdoor work. People have also been advised in weather-related advisories to remain cautious during periods of gusty winds and keep away from loose structures, exposed electrical wires and old trees. [KNT]
