Mendhar, Oct 9: Three landmines were recovered and destroyed by the Army in forward areas along the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir’s Poonch district, with two detected near the fence at Basooni Top in Mendhar sector and another during routine patrolling in Balakote.
Officials said an Army bomb disposal squad reached Basooni Top and safely destroyed the two mines. In a separate incident, troops detected a landmine in the Balakote forward area, which was also destroyed by a bomb disposal team.
No loss of life or damage to property was reported in either incident, officials said.
The forward areas along the LoC contain landmines as part of the anti-infiltration obstacle system. Some mines can be displaced from their original positions by rain and other natural factors, making their detection and safe disposal necessary to reduce risks to personnel and people who may enter the affected areas.
The latest recoveries underline the continuing requirement for patrols and explosive-disposal teams to identify and neutralise mines that are found outside their original positions. [KNT]
