The decision of the Jammu and Kashmir government to present a resolution in the Legislative Assembly against the mandatory Teacher Eligibility Test (TET) for in-service teachers is indeed a bold step which showcases the government’s stand in favor of its people .
It is a resolute statement which shows that the government respects and honors the sacrifices of the teachers .
The Supreme Court verdict on TET, forcing teachers to take this test disregards the service of thousands of teachers who have served the state with honesty and integrity .
These teachers do not have to appear for the TET as they were recruited prior to the implementation of this norm .
However, the recent order of the Supreme Court goes against them, ignoring the service they have rendered to the state.
Education minister has rightly said that the matter pertained to the dignity of the teachers .
A teacher who has prepared lakh of students for examinations cannot be questioned on his eligibility after serving for so many years. This order has caused panic and depression amongst the teachers which in turn will have adverse impact on the budding generation as a mentally disturbed teacher cannot produce mentally sound students. The government’s quick response to this unprecedented situation by way of approaching the Supreme Court through a review petition and also seeking the mandate of the assembly is indeed appreciable.
The government has taken a responsible step by presenting this resolution which will boost the morale of not only the teachers but also the people of Jammu and Kashmir who support the government in taking this stand. The anxiety and concern that the teachers’ community is facing today will be mitigated and they can face the challenge of TET without any mental trauma.
This will be a step towards ensuring quality education as the government is focusing on the welfare of the teachers who are the backbone of the educational system.
There should be no hesitation on the part of the government in supporting the teachers. The government should realize that fighting for the teachers is fighting for the country’s future generation. The proposed resolution will surely have positive fallout for the teachers as well as the government.
