Srinagar: Six people were killed and five others injured in a road accident in the Shiendra area of Surankote in Poonch district on Wednesday, officials said.
According to officials, the accident occurred in the hilly Surankote area, following which senior civil and police officers rushed to the spot to supervise relief and rescue operations. Local residents also joined the efforts.
The injured were immediately shifted to a nearby health facility for treatment. Further details regarding the cause of the accident and the identities of those involved are awaited.
Meanwhile, Deputy Commissioner Poonch, Ashok Kumar Sharma, along with Additional Deputy Commissioner Tahir Mustafa Malik visited District hospital immediately after receiving information about a tragic road accident at Shindra in Tehsil Surankote in which six persons lost their lives and three others sustained injuries.
During his visit to the hospital, the Deputy Commissioner interacted with the attendants of injured persons. He enquired from the medical staff about the condition and the treatment being provided to the injured.
The Deputy Commissioner was apprised that soon after the accident, Chief Medical Officer Dr. Parvez Ahmed Khan, mobilised eight ambulances from the DH and Sub-District Hospital Surankote to the accident site for the rescue and evacuation of the injured.
The Deputy Commissioner directed the health department to ensure that all possible medical care is provided to the injured.
The accident occurred when a vehicle on way from Poonch to Shindra went out of control and plunged into a deep gorge.
The district administration expressed deep sorrow over the loss of precious lives and conveyed its heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families. The administration assured that every possible assistance would be extended to the affected families and that all necessary medical care would be provided to the injured.
Moreover, Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha expressed grief over the loss of lives and directed the district administration to provide immediate assistance to those affected.
“Pained by the loss of lives in a tragic road accident in Poonch. My thoughts are with the bereaved families. Praying for the speedy recovery of the injured. Have directed the District Administration to ensure immediate assistance is provided to those affected,” Sinha said in a post on X.
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah also expressed deep grief over the accident, which claimed six lives and left several others injured.
The Chief Minister conveyed his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and prayed for peace to the departed souls. He directed the concerned authorities to ensure the best possible medical treatment and care for the injured and extend all possible assistance to the affected families.
The accident has once again brought the focus on persistent road safety concerns in the hilly districts of Jammu and Kashmir, including Poonch, Rajouri, Doda, Kishtwar, Ramban, Reasi and Udhampur, which have witnessed frequent fatal road accidents.
Experts have attributed such incidents to poor road conditions, rash and negligent driving, over-speeding, overloading and road rage.
Traffic authorities have deployed special checking squads in these districts to enforce traffic discipline. Regional Transport Officers have also been issuing warnings through newspapers about penalties for traffic violations, including cancellation of vehicle registration certificates and driving licences, as well as action against parents when minors are found driving.
Petrol stations have been advised not to provide fuel to two-wheeler riders without helmets. Authorities have also intensified action against stunt driving by youth, including cancellation of registration certificates of vehicles involved and counselling of parents at traffic control rooms.
