Seeks big push for Kashmir’s film, cultural revival
Srinagar, August 24: A delegation of the J&K Cinema Guild Srinagar, comprising noted artist and art promoter Waheed Jeelani and renowned actor and film director Umar Imtiyaz, called on Chief Minister Omar Abdullah at his residence and held an extensive discussion on the cultural and creative landscape of Jammu and Kashmir.
The delegation presented a comprehensive project report and proposal for establishing and developing a vibrant regional film industry in Jammu and Kashmir, on the lines of successful regional film industries in other parts of the country. The delegation strongly urged the Chief Minister to initiate steps for the revival and effective implementation of the existing J&K Film Policy, with greater opportunities for local filmmakers, actors, technicians, musicians and other creative professionals.
The delegation also drew the Chief Minister’s attention towards the urgent need to revive and strengthen local cultural institutions, particularly Akashwani stations, Doordarshan stations, DD Kashir and the J&K Academy of Art, Culture and Languages, and make them vibrant platforms for young and emerging artists.
The Guild urged the Chief Minister to take up these issues at the highest level with the Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting, Union Minister for Culture, the Prime Minister and the Union Home Minister, so that Jammu and Kashmir’s rich cultural and cinematic potential receives the institutional support it deserves.
The delegation also invited the Chief Minister and other senior ministers to participate in the Artists’ Convention proposed to be held in September 2026, which will bring together leading artists, politicians, policymakers, filmmakers, musicians, actors and cultural practitioners to deliberate on the issues & future of the creative sector in Jammu and Kashmir.
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah gave the delegation a patient hearing and assured that the issues raised would be looked into and taken care of. He emphasised that “our artists and performers are our assets”, underlining the importance of nurturing and supporting the region’s creative community.
The J&K Cinema Guild expressed hope that the Chief Minister’s assurance will translate into concrete policy initiatives and renewed institutional support, paving the way for a strong, self-sustaining and professionally organised regional film and cultural industry in Jammu and Kashmir.
