CCS reviews fuel, fertiliser supplies
New Delhi, July 30: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday directed the government to establish a unified and coordinated mechanism for continuous monitoring of the ongoing West Asia conflict, asking all ministries to ensure the swift implementation of measures to safeguard Indian citizens, the diaspora and key supplies, during the fourth special meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) on the crisis.
Chairing the high-level meeting, Modi said a whole-of-government approach should continue to address challenges arising from the conflict and called for regular monitoring of developments to ensure timely and coordinated action in the national interest.
The Prime Minister also directed the establishment of a dedicated mechanism to provide timely information, emergency assistance and counselling to Indian seafarers serving on domestic and foreign-flagged vessels operating in conflict zones, along with support for their families.
Reviewing India’s preparedness, the CCS assessed the country’s requirement of fertilisers for the forthcoming Rabi season and discussed alternate sourcing options. Modi instructed officials to take all necessary measures to ensure an uninterrupted supply of fertilisers.
Cabinet Secretary T.V. Somanathan briefed the committee on the geopolitical situation and the steps taken to maintain adequate supplies of petroleum products, including crude oil, LNG, LPG and fertilisers.
He informed the meeting that LPG procurement sources had already been diversified and that the overall stock and supply position of major petroleum products remained adequate. He said sufficient crude oil availability had enabled Central Public Sector Enterprise refineries to operate at utilisation levels exceeding 100 per cent, ensuring uninterrupted production of petrol, diesel and other petroleum products.
The Cabinet Secretary also outlined measures to strengthen the country’s gas infrastructure, including expansion of Piped Natural Gas (PNG) connections, the National Gas Grid, LNG import and regasification capacity, City Gas Distribution networks, and faster pipeline and last-mile connectivity approvals under the Pipeline Infrastructure Order, 2026.
Modi stressed that every effort must be made to protect Indian citizens and the Indian diaspora from the impact of the West Asia conflict.
He also underscored the need to accelerate the country’s transition towards renewable energy, calling for greater emphasis on solar power and other non-fossil fuel-based energy sources to strengthen India’s long-term energy security.
