In addressing the pressing issues being faced by almond farmers in the Kashmir region, the government of the state has introduced a pilot project regarding the concept of high-density farming practices in the Pulwama district of the Horticulture Department.
At the core of high density farming lies the basic principle of planting almond saplings in close proximity to each other.
By adopting the new farming techniques, the Horticulture Department has made efforts to help local farmers increase their income by adopting new farming techniques.
Kashmir valley is known for producing wonderful almond crops yet the growers have been facing lots of challenges in the previous years since many farmers have shifted from growing almonds to apples thus being more economically feasible.
Horticulture Department has made efforts to remedy the situation though by introducing latest high-yield almond varieties in the regions thus giving farmers new hopes for prosperity.
The pilot initiative involves not only increasing revenues for the farmers but also maintaining the old traditions in the region thanks to good management practices.
Recurrently, the almond sector of Kashmir has faced issues and challenges. The amount of the crop grown has dropped greatly due to global warming and increasing annual losses.
The unpredictability of profit gained from almonds is making farmers switch to apple plantations where they have high productivity and revenues draining less land.
The project will be beneficial for the almond sector as it will restore its past profitability.
As per the reports of the government, the pilot project is being implemented in the course of the program designed to combat the negative trend in the valley regarding almond production.
The government can design more such projects and initiate benefitting other sectors as well and with that move the people of Jammu and Kashmir can boost their economy.
