Srinagar: The Meteorological Department (MeT) on Monday forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall across parts of Jammu and Kashmir over the next four days, warning of flash floods, landslides, mudslides and flooding in low-lying areas as a major wet spell grips the Union Territory.
According to the MeT, generally cloudy weather with spells of rain and thundershowers is expected across most places from July 20 to 23.
Heavy rain, brief intense showers and torrential rainfall are likely in several districts, with heavy to very heavy rainfall expected over parts of Jammu division and extremely heavy rainfall possible in Reasi and Udhampur, particularly during afternoon, evening and late night to morning hours.
The department warned of flash floods, landslides, mudslides, a rise in water levels in rivers and streams, and waterlogging in vulnerable low-lying areas during the period.
From July 24 to 27, rain and thundershowers are expected at scattered places, with brief spells of intense rainfall continuing in some areas.
During the past 24 hours, Rajouri recorded the highest rainfall at 92.5 mm, followed by Poonch (78 mm), Chahta in Jammu (59 mm), Katra (53.5 mm), Ganderbal (46 mm), Srinagar (45.6 mm) and Ramban (45.2 mm), according to the MeT.
Meanwhile, an independent weather forecaster also predicted a major wet spell across Jammu and Kashmir over the next 48 to 72 hours, with heavy to extremely heavy rainfall likely over most parts of the Union Territory.
The forecaster said the highest impact is expected in the Jammu region and South Kashmir, while Central and North Kashmir are also likely to receive heavy rain.
The independent forecast warned of a high risk of flash floods, local flooding, overflowing streams, cloudbursts, landslides, mudslides and shooting stones, particularly in hilly areas, and advised people to avoid unnecessary travel to vulnerable locations and follow official weather advisories.
