SRINAGAR, July 13: The National Medical Commission (NMC) has approved 50 additional MBBS seats for Government Medical College (GMC) Jammu, increasing its annual intake capacity from 200 to 250 students from the 2026-27 academic session, the Health and Medical Education Department said on Monday.
The approval was granted through a Letter of Permission (LoP) issued by the Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB) of the NMC, marking the second such expansion in Jammu and Kashmir within a week.
The latest approval comes days after the NMC sanctioned 50 additional MBBS seats for GMC Srinagar, raising its annual intake to 250 from the 2026-27 academic session. With the two approvals, the Union Territory has secured an additional 100 MBBS seats across its two premier government medical colleges.
The Health and Medical Education Department said the expansion reflects the government’s commitment to strengthening medical education infrastructure, enhancing healthcare human resources and creating more opportunities for students from Jammu and Kashmir to pursue medical education within the Union Territory.
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah welcomed the development in a post on X, congratulating Health and Medical Education Minister Sakina Itoo, as well as the faculty and administration of GMC Jammu and GMC Srinagar, on the NMC’s approval.
He described the increase in annual intake capacity from the 2026-27 academic session as a significant achievement that underscores the government’s commitment to strengthening medical education and expanding opportunities for aspiring doctors across Jammu and Kashmir.
